Why Oneungi Shabu Baeksuk on a cold, rainy Asan trip?
On our Asan trip with the kids, we ran into wind, rain and a sudden cold snap, so we went looking for a warm, restorative meal and ended up at Oneungi Shabu Baeksuk (오능이샤브백숙) in Eumbong. The excitement of the trip didn't last long, because the weather looked rough. With the storm blowing and the temperature plunging, the kids were coughing and we parents were shivering too.

On days like this you crave something warm and filling. Looking for a restorative dish the whole family could share, we found Oneungi Shabu Baeksuk, a well-known local favorite.

It's more than a place to just get a meal: the carefully simmered broth and the variety of mushrooms caught my eye. A warm table was exactly what the chilly weather called for, so here's our Oneungi Shabu Baeksuk visit in Asan!!
Oneungi Shabu Baeksuk location, parking and opening hours
Oneungi Shabu Baeksuk is at 5 Eumbong-ro 401beon-gil, Eumbong-myeon, Asan, Chungnam, on the 1st floor. It's a handy stop if you're traveling around Asan Spavis, Asan CC, or the Dongam and Wolrang reservoirs and need somewhere to eat.

There are lots in front of the restaurant and behind the building, with room for about 25 cars. Parking and valet are both free, which is convenient for families traveling by car.
It's open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., with a break from 3 to 4 p.m. Baeksuk takes a long time to cook, so I recommend booking ahead. I reserved through Naver, and the table was already set when we arrived, which made starting the meal much easier.
What does the neungi duck shabu baeksuk broth taste like?

We ordered the restaurant's signature dish, neungi duck shabu baeksuk, a hearty restorative meal.

The real star is the broth. Eomnamu (prickly castor tree) and kkujippong (cudrania tree) are simmered for a long time, then fragrant neungi mushrooms (oak-tree mushrooms) are added for a deep flavor.

With the first spoonful, the faint neungi aroma and rich broth came together, perfect for a day when I was craving something hot and soupy. And whenever the broth ran low, the staff somehow noticed and refilled it right away, which was great.
How to eat the 8-mushroom shabu-shabu

The neungi duck shabu baeksuk comes with rare mushrooms you don't often get to eat, like cordyceps and lion's mane,

Dip the mushrooms briefly in the bubbling broth and eat them with the tender duck. The soft duck and the mushrooms' distinctive textures made even a single dish feel varied.

Dipping the mushrooms in the peanut sauce with mustard added a nutty note that felt different. (The peanut sauce is the secret weapon!) Even people who don't like meat sitting in liquid can focus on the mushrooms, so there are more options for everyone.
From neungi duck baeksuk to neungi sticky rice porridge
After the mushrooms had nicely whetted our appetite, it was time for today's main event: the neungi duck baeksuk.

The duck in the broth, infused with the soft aroma of neungi, was already tender, so all you have to do is eat. Sipping the broth with the mild meat, I felt my body, chilled by the wind and rain, slowly melting. I had been desperate for something that warms you from the inside, and it couldn't have been more satisfying. My eldest grabbed a duck leg and gnawed away, and the coughing just stopped!
But the real finishing move comes at the end: Oneungi's special neungi sticky rice.

This isn't ordinary sticky rice: it's slowly simmered in the baeksuk broth, so it keeps its deep flavor to the last spoonful.

After we finished the duck and mushrooms, we put the sticky rice into the broth, now as rich as it gets, and ate it as porridge. The depth of that nutty, savory flavor was something else.

Afterward, homemade sikhye (sweet rice drink) and fragrant neungi golden mushroom tea were waiting, so the ending was clean too.

With neat side dishes that pair perfectly with the baeksuk, it was a meal where you could really feel the care for the customers.
Private rooms for family birthdays and dining with kids
Oneungi Shabu Baeksuk suits not only cozy family meals but is also a top candidate for a parent's birthday or a more formal group gathering.

If you have a birthday or anniversary coming up, take note: there are private spaces, from a dedicated party room for up to 16 people to a separate room for 20.

Just remember that setting up a birthday table and the party room takes careful preparation, so a reservation at least 7 days ahead is a must!

Visiting with kids is no worry either. There are high chairs and strollers are allowed, so the whole family can focus on eating comfortably. Also, for group visits, tell them how many cars you're bringing when you book, and the restaurant can guide parking much more smoothly.
Can't visit? The Oneungi Shabu Baeksuk meal kit

If distance makes a visit hard, look into the Oneungi Shabu Baeksuk meal kit, which recreates the restaurant's flavor. Following the recipe, you just simmer it for about 20 minutes and, they say, you can enjoy that deep, rich restorative flavor at home. You can share a healthy meal with people you care about anywhere in the country, so it's worth a try.
Verdict: Oneungi Shabu Baeksuk in Eumbong, Asan

Oneungi Shabu Baeksuk in Eumbong was literally a place that showed what a restorative meal your body recognizes first is all about. More than just an Asan baeksuk restaurant, with its shabu of precious medicinal mushrooms and a neungi broth made with 4 hours of care, it felt like being given a truly dignified meal.
