Quiet Sangsu pub for Buyeo chestnut makgeolli: Dambaek Jujeom

Dambaek Jujeom (담백주점) is a quiet Korean pub on Yanghwa-ro 6-gil in Mapo, Seoul, near Sangsu Station. The writer paired Buyeo chestnut makgeolli (rice wine) with crispy shredded potato pancake, a Hanwoo yukhoe (Korean beef tartare) and gochujang stew set, and shrimp with pollock roe and gamtae seaweed rice balls. The food and makgeolli matched so well that one planned bottle became two. Dambaek Jujeom suits a calm makgeolli night in Sangsu, alone or as a pair.

Seooreung Chinese restaurant: chive jjamppong, tangsuyuk to go

Jjamppong Jijeon Seooreung Branch (짬뽕지존 서오릉점) is a Chinese restaurant on Seooreung-ro in Deogyang-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi. On a weekend visit the writer ordered jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles), jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) and sticky-rice tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork); the spicy, chive-topped jjamppong and the thick sticky-rice tangsuyuk stood out, and the leftover tangsuyuk was taken home and reheated. With plenty of parking and a well-stocked self-bar, Jjamppong Jijeon Seooreung Branch is a good family meal stop on a Seooreung outing.

Saejeol Station ramen shop with an open noodle kitchen: Oreno Ramen

Oreno Ramen Eunpyeong (오레노라멘 은평점) is a chicken paitan ramen shop on Bulgwangcheon-gil in Eunpyeong, Seoul, a 5-minute walk from Saejeol Station Exit 1. It is a branch of Oreno Ramen, whose Hapjeong flagship earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand. The writer and a companion ordered one tori paitan and one karai paitan, and found a rich but not greasy broth, thin house-made noodles, and two meats: chicken breast and pork belly chashu. They also got noodle, rice and soup refills. At ₩12,000 a bowl, Oreno Ramen Eunpyeong is good value for the quality and the refills.

Paju ssambap restaurant, aged kimchi on scorched-rice tea: Simhaksan

Simhaksan Deulkkot Ssambap (심학산 들꽃쌈밥) is a ssambap (rice and leafy-green wraps) Korean set-meal restaurant on Dolgoji-gil in Paju, Gyeonggi. After a weekend walk on the Simhaksan trail, the writer ordered the Deul set for two (20,000 won per person): spicy stir-fried pork and squid, stone-pot rice, gangdoenjang (thick soybean paste stew), doenjang jjigae, unlimited wrap greens and a self-serve dessert corner. Simhaksan Deulkkot Ssambap serves mild, filling food and is a solid meal stop for a Simhaksan outing.
