Friday-night Korean BBQ in Hapjeong: mild chiletan set at Champpoppo
In short
Champpoppo Jjokgalbi Hapjeong Branch is a jjokgalbi (grilled pork rib) restaurant on Yangwha-ro 6-gil in Mapo, Seoul. On a Friday evening the writer ordered the 51,000 won chiletan set at the mild spice level — two servings of soy-marinated ribs, one serving of spicy marinated ribs, chiletan rice balls and steamed egg — and got 5,000 won off for ordering a set. The soy ribs at Champpoppo were clean and satisfying with no gamey smell, but the chiletan rice balls still ran hot for anyone weak with spice.

Today I'm sharing my visit to a jjokgalbi (grilled pork rib) restaurant that's been getting hot lately in Hapjeong — Champpoppo Jjokgalbi. If you've been looking for moist, savory pork ribs with no gamey smell around Hapjeong or Sangsu, pay attention!

Where is Champpoppo Jjokgalbi Hapjeong Branch, and what are its hours?
Champpoppo Jjokgalbi Hapjeong Branch is at 77 Yangwha-ro 6-gil, 1st floor, Mapo-gu, Seoul, near Hapjeong Station. It's open 17:00–24:00, and closes at 01:00 from Friday through Sunday.
Located near Hapjeong Station, this place is perfectly positioned for an after-work or weekend dinner. When I visited on a Friday evening, the restaurant filled up with customers in no time.

What comes in the 51,000 won chiletan set?
What I ordered that day was Champpoppo's signature set, the chiletan set. The composition is generous, making it the safest and most satisfying choice for a group of 2–3.
- Chiletan set, ₩51,000
- 2 servings soy jjokgalbi
- 1 serving spicy marinated jjokgalbi
- Chiletan rice balls
- Steamed egg
It's the best value combo — meat, rice, and steamed egg to cool down the spice, all in one full course. And ordering it as a set gets you a ₩5,000 discount!

You could also choose the spice level for the set. Since we're spice-wimps, we went with mild, haha.

Pasta set, chiletan set, mixed set — there are three set menus, so pick whichever suits your taste!

Inside Champpoppo Jjokgalbi: atmosphere and seating
Champpoppo Jjokgalbi Hapjeong Branch was packed full on Friday evening, but it wasn't hard to request a seat.

I liked this seat the most, but it was still a bit hot out. I asked to switch seats and they happily obliged.

Disposable apron: check.
Free side dishes: chicken porridge, corn cheese and pork skin

The basic side dishes were pickled onion, chicken porridge, cabbage salad, pickles, and more. I found the chicken porridge surprising, but it was great for cooling down the spice when eating the spicy marinated ribs.

They also gave us corn cheese to dip the ribs in. Putting cheese on the spicy ribs made them taste even better, haha.

Pork skin and sliced potato came as standard too. I don't eat pork skin, so I didn't get to try it, haha.

Soy-marinated jjokgalbi, 2 servings: sweet, salty and not gamey
The soy jjokgalbi shows the textbook version of sweet-and-salty, with a gentle charcoal aroma. The meat on the bone is thick, so it's really fun to tear off and eat. The soy sauce marinade soaked into the grain of the meat without being overdone, making it truly clean-tasting.

Notably, there was no gamey pork smell at all, so I could eat it cleanly from start to finish. It's a flavor that kids or people who can't handle spicy food would love without hesitation.

Spicy marinated jjokgalbi, 1 serving: can you handle the heat?
Coated in red sauce that gets your mouth watering just by looking at it, the spicy marinated jjokgalbi has an addictively spicy flavor mingled with a smoky char.

It's not just spicy for the sake of it — there's a deep savory flavor too, so alternating bites of soy ribs and spicy marinated ribs created the perfect sweet-salty-spicy balance. Even though I can't handle spicy food well, it was delicious.

How spicy are the chiletan rice balls?
True to the name
True to the name 'chiletan' (tear gas), the spice is intense, lol. The first bite is fine, but the burn creeps up as you keep eating. If you're someone who really can't handle spicy food, I'd recommend skipping the chiletan rice balls, or scooping off some of the sauce before mixing!!

The chiletan rice balls have crunchy bits of cartilage that make them fun to chew, but they were too spicy for me — next time I'll try the tuna mayo rice balls instead, haha.

Why steamed egg comes with the chiletan set
When your mouth is on fire from the spicy rice balls, a spoonful of soft, fluffy steamed egg cools everything right down. I understood exactly why the set includes steamed egg the moment I tasted it.

Restroom inside the restaurant, and the verdict on Champpoppo
The side dishes were so good the drinks went down smoothly. Oh, and one more thing I really liked about Champpoppo Jjokgalbi — there's a clean restroom inside the restaurant. Places that share a restroom with the building outside can be inconvenient to use, so having a tidy one right inside was really convenient. There was even hand sanitizer, so I could wash my hands properly before and after eating meat.
Champpoppo Jjokgalbi in Hapjeong even thinks of these small touches for customers, and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for good jjokgalbi near Hapjeong or Sangsu Station. True to its status as a packed hotspot, the quality of the meat, the taste of the sauces, and the cleanliness of the restaurant were all satisfying :)
