Summer beers with a friend at a Hongdae Korean BBQ: Gogikkun Gim
In short
Gogikkun Gim Chunbae Hongdae Main Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant on the 3rd floor at 36 Hongik-ro 3-gil in Mapo, Seoul, serving hanwoo (Korean beef) and handon (Korean pork) at the same table. Catching up with an old friend here meant grilling beef and pork side by side, dipping each piece in salt and jeotgal (salted seafood sauce), and finishing with summer beer, dice rice and half-and-half naengmyeon (cold noodles). Gogikkun Gim Chunbae is an easy pick in Hongdae when you want beef and pork in one sitting.

Can we even talk about life without meat in it? Unimaginable, so today I went and ate meat again haha.
I hadn't seen this friend in ages, so I actually put real thought into where to eat. She was coming from pretty far away so I didn't want to waste it on something mediocre — I searched my eyes out for a BBQ spot that's known locally for being genuinely good. Reviews everywhere, photos that made my mouth water, so I ran straight over. Had such a great time with my friend and ate until I was stuffed! Today I'm introducing Gogikkun Gim Chunbae Hongdae Main Branch.

The 3rd-floor entrance and interior at Gogikkun Gim Chunbae

Gogikkun Gim Chunbae Hongdae Main Branch sits right on Hongdae's main street, so it's easy to find.

They've decorated the stairwell up to the 3rd floor with liquor bottles here and there — kind of a tasteful touch haha.

Feels a bit like walking into a secret base, doesn't it lol.

Here's the inside. Spacious, with good duct ventilation so it wasn't stuffy, and the floor didn't have that slick, greasy feeling either — a plus. The lighting was also the kind that just calls for a drink. You know the kind I mean.
Menu lineup and free corkage at this Hongdae Korean BBQ

Here's the menu. Everything from set menus to a la carte, plus a variety of side dishes so everyone can eat happily without any complaints. And free corkage really stands out, right? Haha.
Side dishes and the jeotgal for dipping the meat

Here are the side dishes. All solid picks that pair well with meat. Nothing cluttered — just meat's best friends, so it was easy to pile them on without a second thought.

The jeotgal (salted seafood sauce) for dipping meat came out too. Add a splash of soju plus garlic and chili and you know it's amazing.
Hanwoo and handon grilled side by side

Today we decided to enjoy both hanwoo and handon. Being able to enjoy both is one of this place's strengths — neither one falls short of the other. The hanwoo quality was great, and the handon quality was excellent too. Good color, a perfect fat-to-lean ratio — the visuals alone made me starving before it even hit the grill...

The hanwoo marbling is so good, right? The handon's fat-to-lean ratio is also a work of art. Not too fatty, not too lean, so grilled and piled onto rice it's just incredible.

Started with the beef. I was hungry enough to want to just grab the raw meat, but I held it together.

Patience pays off... it was so good. Beef grills fast too, thankfully. You've got to eat it while it's sizzling, right?
Summer beer, and the first bite dipped in salt

Wouldn't be right without drinks, so I ordered right away. Once you're past 30, you can't help but think about tomorrow. Wanted somaek but negotiated with tomorrow's self and settled on just beer. Summer really does call for beer.

Between sips, the meat cooked up fast. A well-grilled cross-section always looks delicious. First bite in salt is the unwritten rule — dipped it right in and it was genuinely great. Good texture, not tough at all, went down so easily.

Such a pretty cross-section. Had it with baek-kimchi (white kimchi), with myeongi namul (mountain garlic leaves), wrapped in lettuce — it disappeared in no time.
Finishing with dice rice and half-and-half naengmyeon

Went raw-then-grilled-then-fried-rice order and had a round of dice rice too. Ah, the grease gets washed right away, so round two was ready to go immediately. Spicy and sweet, it just kept going down. Blood sugar be damned, I just inhaled it.

One of the great dilemmas of any BBQ meal: bibim naengmyeon or mul naengmyeon? Usually I just order both. But at Gogikkun Gim Chunbae Hongdae Main Branch you can order it half-and-half. My friend and I split it happily, no arguments needed.
