Jeonju street-food stall with crispy octopus gangjeong: Munkkocchi

In short

Munkkocchi Mungangjeong Jeonju Hanok Village Branch is an octopus skewer and octopus fritter street-food stall on Eunhaeng-ro in Jeonju Hanok Village. On a family outing, one visitor ordered at the kiosk: a munkkocchi (octopus skewer) for 5,000 won and katsuo-flavored mungangjeong (fried octopus gangjeong) for 8,500 won, and the fritter came in a thin, crackly batter like guobaorou (crispy sweet-and-sour pork), with chewy octopus and a generous portion. Munkkocchi Mungangjeong is a Hanok Village must-eat, and the mungangjeong is worth ordering again on the next visit.

Munkkocchi Mungangjeong: the snack to eat in Jeonju Hanok Village

I'm introducing "Munkkocchi Mungangjeong," the snack you absolutely have to eat in Jeonju Hanok Village, from a trip I took with my family. Jeonju is a city famous for its food, but this street food can't be skipped either!

If you like takoyaki, you'll definitely love this. It's much easier to enjoy than takoyaki, so both adults and kids can snack on it casually. They also sell slushy beer, so if you didn't drive or you're staying overnight, definitely pair it with a beer or drink :)

I love octopus and squid so much that as a kid, whenever I came to Jeonju Hanok Village, I always ate munkkocchi. But now there's mungangjeong too? Something about the look of it made me want to try it and wonder what it tasted like. This time I ordered both munkkocchi and mungangjeong!

Ordering the 5,000-won octopus skewer and 8,500-won octopus gangjeong

You order at Munkkocchi Mungangjeong via kiosk, and refundable Onnuri gift vouchers are accepted. I love bonito flakes so I ordered the katsuo flavor, but I saw a lot of people ordering cheese mungangjeong and munkkocchi too!

Munkkocchi was ₩5,000 and mungangjeong was ₩8,500. I really recommend the mungangjeong. It seems like a feature of Hanok Village shops to sell several menu items rather than just one!

Mild or spicy sauce: which one to pick

There were mild and spicy sauces, and the spicy one wasn't too spicy at all, so it seemed like it would suit adult tastes perfectly. The mild one is perfect for kids' palates! From now on I'm going to only get the spicy one. It's totally my taste.

First I was moved by how generously they sprinkled the bonito flakes. Second shock came from the sauce flavor, third from the chewy texture of the octopus, and fourth from the mungangjeong's batter...

How the mungangjeong tastes: thin, crisp batter like guobaorou

This is the mungangjeong, and the portion was generous. It was much more my style than dakgangjeong (Korean fried chicken bites). The batter is thin and crispy, kind of like gwabaro, and the octopus is chewy inside, giving you an even more satisfying texture. Combined with the bonito flakes and sauce, the savory flavor really made me think this is something you must eat in Hanok Village.

I'll definitely order mungangjeong again next time!!!! I really fell for it this time. If I hadn't been driving, I would have had a beer with it too — kind of a bummer, ㅠㅠ

Choosing octopus skewers flavor by flavor

The munkkocchi was just, honestly, delicious. There are various kinds of munkkocchi, so it seems like it'd be fun to pick and choose. Next time I'll try the cheese munkkocchi.

Eating munkkocchi and mungangjeong on a bench

Where to eat it: tables beside the stall, village benches, or takeout

The octopus pieces were big enough that I could really enjoy them, and the spicy + mild sauce combo was nice for dipping into both. You can eat at the tables next to the shop, but there are also plenty of chairs around Hanok Village, so eating on a bench has its own charm! Or you could take it to go and enjoy it as a late-night snack or treat back at your accommodation.

I saw a review saying the cheese + spicy combo is good, so try that!!! I'll be coming back to eat this again myself.

Jeonju Hanok Village has so much good street food, which I love. Besides Munkkocchi Mungangjeong, there's plenty else to enjoy, so I recommend visiting Jeonju Hanok Village. I also found a spot where you can play ttakchigi (a traditional Korean slap-match game) for free.
