Jeonju Hanok Village chicken shop with draft beer to go: Mannyeon

In short

Mannyeon Dakgangjeong Hanok Village Direct Store is a dakgangjeong (sweet crispy Korean fried chicken) takeout shop on Taejo-ro, the main street of Jeonju Hanok Village. The writer packed a large half-and-half box of spicy and soy dakgangjeong as a late-night snack for the hotel, and picked up draft beer to go and Jeonju moju (lightly fermented rice wine) at the same counter. The chicken at Mannyeon Dakgangjeong stayed crisp even after cooling, and the large size was more than enough to fill up two people.

Open kitchen and fresh-fruit sauce at Mannyeon Dakgangjeong

The first thing that caught my eye when we arrived at Mannyeon Dakgangjeong Hanok Village Direct Store was the clean open kitchen. Being able to see the cooking process right there definitely gave me confidence on the hygiene side.

They only use freshly prepared chicken every day, and what was especially special was that the sauce uses fresh fruit like apples and pineapple. You could feel the pride they take in the taste, and my expectations shot up!

Fitting for a hanok village with lots of foreign tourists, they also had a neat English menu ready.

What we ordered: large half-and-half dakgangjeong

I couldn't give up trying multiple flavors, so I ordered the half-and-half dakgangjeong in the large size. For flavors, I chose the most popular spicy option combined with the best-selling soy sauce option!

They also sell some tasty-looking side dishes.

As soon as I ordered, they made it fresh right there. The dakgangjeong came out giving off a delicious smell, and it looked amazing.

There was a thoughtful note on the box asking you to leave the lid slightly open, since steam can make it soggy. I kept it just barely cracked to preserve the crispiness and rushed back to our lodging at lightning speed.

How the soy and spicy dakgangjeong tasted

The glossy shine on it was no joke! Being the large size, the portion was really generous, filling enough for two people to eat until stuffed.

First bite, the soy flavor! Wow, the crispiness was outstanding. Maybe because of the fresh fruit sauce, the sweetness wasn't artificial but subtle and refined, blending with the salty soy base for a textbook sweet-and-salty combo.

Next, the spicy flavor I'd been looking forward to! Topped with cheongyang chili peppers and garlic, it looked spicy just from the visuals. One bite in... oh! It was deliciously spicy!

The description said it's a bit spicier than Shin Ramyun, but it was a clean, well-balanced spiciness. The chili and garlic you'd bite into now and then gave a sharp kick, and it was the perfect pairing for beer!
