Seafood restaurant in Suseong with a banchan bar: Geumdeungeo

In short

Geumdeungeo Deulanguil Main Branch is a wood-fired mackerel restaurant in Suseong, Daegu. I ordered grilled mackerel and two servings of spicy pork stir-fry, then added side dishes from the self-serve banchan bar. The partitioned rooms and parking were convenient for a family meal, though children may need help with small fish bones and the spicy pork.

What did I eat for a family meal on Deulan-gil?

I visited Geumdeungeo Deulanguil Main Branch (금등어 들안길 본점), a restaurant specializing in wood-fired grilled mackerel in the Deulan-gil dining area. I ordered grilled mackerel and spicy pork stir-fry together, and the many side dishes alongside the mains made for a filling meal.

With a main order, you can use the self-serve banchan (side-dish) bar. I liked being able to bring back more of the side dishes I wanted, and I remembered not only the grilled mackerel but also the sweet-and-spicy pork stir-fry.

There is a parking lot on the building's first floor, with an attendant, so parking was easy. Parking is free when you have it validated at the restaurant before leaving.

I took the elevator to the second floor, ordered at the entrance, and was shown to my table. The system requires one menu item per person, and there may be a wait at weekend meal times.

Coffee and drinks are also provided to have after the meal.

Is there seating suitable for family gatherings?

The window-side seats facing the road were sofas with a clear view outside. There were spacious partitioned rooms farther inside, which I thought would work well for a family meal.

The interior was spacious, and there was also a serving robot. I visited before the evening rush, so I was able to eat quietly.

Each table had extra dishes ready, and additional orders could be placed through table ordering.

What is available at the self-serve banchan bar?

The self-serve bar had borigangjeong (crisp sweet barley snacks) and several side dishes. Hot dishes were set on induction cooktops, and everything was neatly arranged.

I could help myself to stir-fried anchovies, gijang miyeok (Gijang seaweed), japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), and more.

Cold dishes were kept in a refrigerated display case. There were lotus-root salad, seed jeotgal (salt-fermented seafood), bellflower-root muchim (seasoned salad) with gochujang, European-style salad, seokbakji (cubed radish kimchi), and scallion kimchi.

The side dishes were neatly displayed, making me want to try each one. The basic side dishes arrived as soon as I sat down, and I especially liked the japchae and salad.

How were the grilled mackerel and spicy pork stir-fry?

Because I ordered two servings of spicy pork stir-fry, the pork came on a hot plate while the grilled mackerel came on a plate. The doenjang jjigae (soybean-paste stew) was heated on an induction cooktop at the table.

The spicy pork stir-fry combined sweet-and-spicy seasoning with crisp onions and shredded perilla leaves. I liked the aroma of the perilla leaves, and its mild sweetness made it easy for me to eat.

The spicy pork stir-fry was good straight away, or warmed on the hot plate.

The wood-fired mackerel was crisp outside and moist inside. The nuruk salt paired well with it; even when I used a fairly generous amount, it did not taste overly salty to me. There were no large bones, but some small bones remained, so I carefully picked the flesh apart as I ate.

I had spoonfuls of the savory doenjang jjigae with rice. The spicy pork stir-fry was sweet, but slightly spicy for children.

I especially liked wrapping rice and mackerel flesh in gopchang gim (crinkled roasted seaweed).

Dipping the rice and mackerel wrapped in seaweed into soy sauce brought the nutty flavors together nicely.

I was satisfied with the two mains and variety of side dishes, and with being able to return to the self-serve bar for more food. For a family meal, the partitioned rooms and parking were convenient advantages. If eating with children, it would be wise to watch for small mackerel bones and the spiciness of the pork stir-fry.
