My mother and I had wood-fired grilled mackerel and spicy stir-fried pork at Geumdeungeo Deulanguil Main Branch (금등어 들안길 본점). It was my first visit back in a while, and I remembered the fish served warm and the side dishes that suited my taste.

Is it a good place for a family meal?

The restaurant is on the second floor at 57 Deulan-ro in Suseong-gu, Daegu. There are three tower-parking facilities on the first floor, so we parked and went upstairs. The interior was pleasant, with tables lined up inside a house-shaped decorated space. I thought it would be a nice place to bring older family members, or for a family meal or gathering.

How much were the grilled mackerel and spicy pork?

At the time the original post was written, the wood-fired grilled mackerel was ₩19,000 per person and the spicy stir-fried pork was ₩20,000 per person. We ordered two servings of grilled mackerel and one serving of spicy pork.

Which side dishes can you refill at the self-service bar?

We could take as much of the house-made side dishes as we wanted from the self-service bar. Lotus root and salad were available, with japchae (stir-fried glass noodles) and seaweed on the opposite side.

The japchae was kept warm over a flame. I went back for some more during the meal, and I liked that the refilled japchae was warm too.

How were the side dishes served with soybean paste soup?

The geundae doenjang-guk (Swiss chard soybean paste soup) was served over a flame. Once it came to a boil, we were to turn the heat down from 8 to 3, flip the hourglass, then turn off the heat and eat when all the sand had run through. Prepared this way, it suited my taste.

Among the dishes set out, the sweet-and-sour seaweed was especially memorable. It is not usually a side dish I eat much of, but I finished it.

I started the meal with the salad. I also enjoyed the pa-kimchi (green onion kimchi), as its seasoning was to my taste.

The lotus root had a mild, soft perilla-seed seasoning. The doraji (bellflower root) was good too, and the stir-fried anchovies and peanuts had a clean taste.

What did the wood-fired mackerel and spicy pork taste like?

The seasoning on the spicy stir-fried pork suited my taste. The warm pork went well with steamed rice.

The wood-fired mackerel was moist and not overly salty. Dipped in nuruk salt, it was seasoned just right for me. With vegetable side dishes, pork, and mackerel, it felt like a neatly arranged table of foods I enjoy.

Like the soybean paste soup, the mackerel was kept over a flame, so it stayed warm throughout the meal. I like fish and meat to stay warm until I eat them, so I appreciated this. It did not have a fishy taste, and I alternated mackerel and pork with rice and soybean paste soup.

Is there dessert after the meal?

Gangjeong (crispy sweet rice snack) was available for dessert. We were full from the meal, so we each had one piece.

There was also coffee and apricot juice, along with cups of ice for anyone who wanted iced coffee. My mother and I chose the apricot juice and enjoyed it.

Can you take home side dishes and mackerel you liked?

The display case by the entrance sold side dishes from the meal. There were items including sweet-and-sour seaweed and lotus root; at the time the original post was written, side dishes were ₩5,000 per pack. Mackerel was also sold to take away for ₩7,000 per pack.

What I liked most about this meal was being able to eat the mackerel warm until the end and refill the side dishes. With parking available and a pleasant interior, it is somewhere I would like to return to when I want a Korean meal with family.
