Paju bakery café on a weekday evening: cream croissant at Barirus
In short
Barirus (바리루스) is a large bakery café at the foot of Bongseosan in Paju-eup, Paju, Gyeonggi, open until 2am on weekends. On a weekday visit around 5pm, most of Barirus's popular breads were nearly sold out, but all bakery items were 20% off after 5pm, and the order was a Bari Spänner (the house einspänner), an iced americano, a cream croissant, Hongmaehwa (red plum blossom) bread and a red bean bun. Barirus, a Paju café for late-night dates. Camping vibes, from brunch to dessert.

I took a spontaneous drive out to Paju, and at the end of it I found a very special place: Barirus. It's become well known as a Paju café where you can relax late into the night, and thanks to its dazzling night view and exotic atmosphere, it's a hot spot among people looking for a big Paju bakery café. Today I'll go through everything carefully: the special spots, the menu, the space and the parking info.
What does the name Barirus mean?
I heard the name Barirus comes from combining "Bari," a beautiful resort town in Italy, and "Luce," meaning light. Special from the name onward, right?
Where is Barirus?
Barirus sits on the slopes of Bongseosan in Paju-eup, in a quiet spot away from the city noise. It's a great location to stop at as the last course after seeing sights like Imjingak Pyeonghwa Nuri Park or Heyri Art Village, and to enjoy Paju's night view too.
What are Barirus's late-night hours?
Barirus is open until 9pm from Monday to Thursday, and until 2am from Friday to Sunday. You can visit at your leisure even late at night.
Is parking easy at Barirus?

As a big Paju bakery café, Barirus has a really huge parking area. There's even a third parking lot, so you can park comfortably without worrying even on weekends. Even beginner drivers can manage it easily.
What does the exterior of Barirus look like?
The first thing that struck me on arrival was the grand red brick building. The exotic look, like the church of a small Italian town, made me curious before I even went in. Climb the stairs and the real Barirus space opens up.
Inside Barirus and the sunset photo zone

Step inside Barirus and a signature space catches your eye and stops you in your tracks.

The artistic image of a sunset over the desert made me feel as if I had traveled to another country.

The interior is very wide and open, with comfortable tables and sofas arranged freely. There are private spaces here and there too, which makes it perfect for a date.

Barirus is enormous, and the moment I walked in, the open feeling put my mind at ease.
An outdoor terrace with a campsite feel
Head outside Barirus and you get a refreshing view and tent seating that gives off camping vibes. It was an unusual space, like being at a campsite.
The bakery zone at 5pm on a weekday

In the middle of the café there's a bakery zone filled with the smell of all kinds of bread, plus the order desk.

When I visited around 5pm on a weekday, most of the popular bakery items were already sold out.

You could really feel how popular this big Paju bakery café is. Across from the bakery is a kitchen carefully making brunch with fresh ingredients. Seeing the professional brunch menu really whetted my appetite.

The cup patbingsu (shaved ice with sweet red bean) my partner loves as a summer treat was popular and, sadly, sold out..... You can enjoy everything from brunch to bakery in one place, so it's a café that's just right for a Paju date or a get-together!!
How do the Bari Spänner and iced americano taste?

If you've come to Barirus, you can't miss the Bari Spänner, the signature drink with the place's own color, right??

The look of the Bari Spänner grabbed me the moment it arrived. It felt familiar somehow, and then I realized: it was that dreamy sunset scene from the entrance, gently settled on top of the coffee.

The chewy, sweet cream wraps softly around your mouth, followed by the heavy, nutty flavor of the beans. The harmony was wonderful.
How do the cream croissant, Hongmaehwa bread and red bean bun taste?

I usually love cream desserts, so my pick at Barirus was the cream croissant.

Sweet cream fills the space between crisp, finely layered pastry, so every bite filled my mouth with cream.
The Hongmaehwa bread (plum blossom bread) caught my eye right away, and I was as curious about its taste as its bright color. Inside that lovely look is plenty of soft sweet potato mousse, a flavor anyone, young or old, would like.

I even got lucky and snagged the very last red bean bun (danpatppang).

The plump bun is packed with whole red beans, a hearty and perfect way to finish.

With tasty desserts and fragrant coffee together, the date in Paju was even more fun.
