Wangsimni beef soup restaurant with jar kimchi: Geumnyeong Gomtang

In short

Geumnyeong Gomtang is a Korean beef gomtang (beef bone soup) and seolleongtang restaurant in a house-like two-story building on Wangsimni-ro 20-gil, near Wangsimni Station in Seongdong, Seoul. The order was one minari (water dropwort) gomtang and one gomtang (special), served with jar kimchi, dried radish strips and mustard sauce, and the water arrived in an old Family Juice bottle that brought back childhood memories. Geumnyeong Gomtang is a good Wangsimni lunch spot for anyone missing the gomtang their mom used to make.

Gomtang always makes me think, weirdly enough, of the gomtang 🍲 my mom used to make.

A bowl of gomtang at Geumnyeong Gomtang

I still crave that childhood flavor sometimes, but my mom is getting older now and it's hard for her to make it like she used to. So I went looking for a restaurant that could bring back that taste, and heard about a place near Wangsimni that simmers their broth with 1++ Korean beef. That's how I ended up at Geumnyeong Gomtang (금녕곰탕), a Wangsimni Station favorite.

A gomtang restaurant that feels like an old family house

When I arrived, the atmosphere was even cozier than I expected. 🏠 A two-story building that looks like an actual house is being used as the restaurant, and even from the outside it gave off a warm, homey feeling.

Going up the stairs, there's a small garden 🌳 on the left, and the restaurant entrance is on the right.

After being seated, I noticed the place has a 2nd and 3rd floor, so there are quite a few tables, and they're spaced generously so it never feels cramped — plenty of room for group gatherings or company dinners.

Looking around at the other diners, a lot of them seemed to be office workers from nearby companies. It made sense — this feels like a solid spot for a Wangsimni Korean lunch 🍲 for people who work in the area.

🤎 Every corner is decorated with little Korean-style touches, giving it a different charm from the sleek, minimalist restaurants you see everywhere these days. It felt like stepping into an old family home from a long time ago. 😊

Why does this water bottle look so familiar?

The Family Juice bottle that brought back memories

Once I sat down at Geumnyeong Gomtang, a water bottle arrived at the table — 🌿 and oh my, isn't this a Family Juice bottle?! 😂 Back in the day, we used to drink barley tea out of bottles like this — it was just an ordinary water bottle then, but seeing it again brought back a warm rush of nostalgia. Funny how one plain little bottle can dig up such old memories. I came here for gomtang and ended up with a bonus scoop of nostalgia right from the start. 😊

What we ordered: minari gomtang and gomtang (special)

Today we ordered one minari gomtang 🌿 and one gomtang (special) 🥩. Not long after ordering, kimchi arrived first, served in a small earthenware jar. The smell alone, the moment it hit the table, was already amazing.

It was cut into bite-sized pieces on the plate, and one bite told me it was fermented just right. I could already tell it would go perfectly with the gomtang — and honestly, kimchi is such a crucial side dish at a gomtang restaurant.

Honestly, at some point you can't tell if you're eating gomtang or kimchi — the two are that tightly linked 😂. That's exactly why the kimchi at a gomtang place deserves so much care.

Minari gomtang: beef broth with a gentle water dropwort aroma

Finally, the minari gomtang arrived. Geumnyeong Gomtang tends to get food out to the table pretty quickly overall.

The first thing I noticed about the minari gomtang was — wow, so much minari (water dropwort)! 🌿 It was piled generously enough to cover the whole surface of the soup. I especially liked that the minari was finely chopped instead of left in long strands.

If the minari were left long, it could get awkward to scoop up together with the rice like a guksu-style soup, but chopped this small it was easy to get rice, broth, and meat all in one spoonful. One bite in, the distinct fragrant scent of minari rose up gently and filled my mouth with a fresh, green aroma.

The deep, hearty flavor typical of gomtang combined with the crisp, fresh scent of minari turned out to be a surprisingly great match. Adding minari to the rich broth made it feel noticeably more refreshing!

Next was the gomtang (special) my husband ordered. Being the special version, it really was loaded with meat. The first spoonful of broth tasted clean and light.

A few spoonfuls in, a gentle, savory beefy aroma started rising up. It wasn't a greasy style at all — the broth was quite refreshing and went down smooth without feeling heavy. This is a Wangsimni gomtang restaurant with a deep flavor that never turns bland.

One bowl of gomtang was hearty enough that I think it would also work well for a solo meal.

So for anyone who wants a warm, filling bowl of soup all to themselves, this would also make a great Wangsimni solo dining spot.

Gomtang needs kimchi: jar kimchi, dried radish and mustard sauce

I took a spoonful of Geumnyeong Gomtang's soup and topped it with kimchi 🥢, then tried it with the dried radish strips too — another perfect match with the soup.

For soups like this, I think the side dishes really need to be good to elevate the whole meal. I dipped the meat in the separately served mustard sauce, and the soft, savory meat with a sharp kick of mustard was a real treat on its own. Between mixing rice into the broth, dipping a piece of meat in the mustard sauce, and topping it all off with kimchi every so often, my bowl was nearly empty before I knew it. 😋

Honestly, the reason I came for gomtang today wasn't simply because I wanted a delicious bowl of soup.

A place I'd love to bring my parents back to

I found myself thinking about the gomtang my mom used to make, and I think I missed that flavor even more now that it's become hard for her to cook it herself the way she used to.

A restaurant I'd recommend to visitors from abroad

Even if it wasn't exactly the same taste, having a warm spoonful of soup brought back memories of the food my mom used to make and the times around it, which made today's meal feel that much more special. I can't believe I only just found out about this place now~ 😋

Now that I know about it, I'd really love to bring my parents next time. Sitting down with mom for a warm bowl of gomtang would just make it even better. Thanks for another warm meal today. ❤️
