I heard there was a great staff-grilled fresh galbi place in Jongno, Daegu, so I went with my family. They grilled it perfectly without burning it, so we could eat comfortably, and I got to try thick, properly juicy fresh galbi (beef ribs) — let me introduce Byeokdol Saenggalbi, now Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch.

Where Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch is and when it opens

A chandelier in a galbi restaurant? Inside floors 1 to 3
Jongno Saenggalbi spans three floors, and when you walk in, the interior immediately catches your eye — it's nothing like a typical BBQ place. It has this exotic, newtro European feel that I found really unique, and honestly, a chandelier in a meat restaurant felt fresh and fun.

If you go up the stairs, the 2nd floor has tables with the same atmosphere.

On the way up the stairs, there's also a space where they make charcoal, plus the restrooms.

The 3rd floor has private rooms that can be divided as needed, which seemed great for gatherings or company dinners where you want some privacy. After looking around the whole space, I could tell the owner had put a lot of thought into the atmosphere and interior.

Side dishes: chive jeotgal, perilla leaf pesto and frozen radish salad
As soon as we sat down, a neat spread was already waiting on the table, served cleanly on a tray — it made us feel well taken care of.
Next to the garlic and ssamjang (thick dipping sauce) were chive jeotgal (salted, fermented chives) and perilla leaf pesto to pair with the fresh galbi — they went really well with the meat, so give them a try.

The frozen radish salad and pickled scallions also suited my taste well — apparently they serve the radish salad frozen because freezing helps the seasoning soak in better.

If you run low on side dishes, there's a self-serve bar.

What we ordered: byeokdol fresh galbi and byeokdol marinated galbi
Aside from the fresh galbi, the menu had all sorts of unfamiliar dishes I was curious about, like ttagwi-jjim (steamed pork jowl) and gaesaebitang (crab soup) and pork bone-in fresh galbi. But since it was our first visit, I felt we had to try the signature fresh galbi, so we ordered the byeokdol fresh galbi and byeokdol marinated galbi.

The fresh galbi came out with thick meat clinging to the bone — you know how they say meat on the bone is especially delicious? There was so much meat on it that I got excited just looking at it before even eating.

How the staff grill the ribs over charcoal
At Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch, a staff member grills the meat to perfection right at your table. The staff member seemed quite experienced, explaining things along the way and grilling it just right — it was genuinely impressive.

The fresh galbi was good even with just a light dip in salt, and it was savory and juicy paired with anything — perilla leaf pesto, chive jeotgal, or pickled scallions.
The part attached to the bone was a bit chewier, which might not be for everyone, but as you keep chewing, a really savory flavor comes through — honestly I liked that part even more than the thick meaty portion. My wife isn't a fan of chewy bits, so I got to finish it all myself.

The byeokdol marinated galbi had a light, slightly sweet sauce over the fresh ribs — not overly sweet, still with the natural savoriness of the meat, plus a nice charred aroma that gave it a different charm from the plain fresh galbi.

They also bring out steamed hinoki cypress wood along the way — even though I was already full, I finished it all.

Ending the meal with jangjak doenjang jjigae
After eating meat, you have to finish with rice and doenjang jjigae, right? So we ordered the jangjak doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) — it wasn't salty or heavy-handed, just clean and mild, which was great for cutting through the greasy feeling after all that meat.
Is Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch worth a visit?
That's my introduction to Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch, a staff-grilled BBQ restaurant in the Jongno food alley in Daegu. Both the fresh galbi and marinated galbi stood out for their thick meat and juiciness, and the variety of side dishes made every bite even better. Thanks to the staff grilling everything so carefully without burning it, we could really enjoy the flavor of the meat — it was a great time. If you want proper fresh galbi in a great atmosphere, give Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch a visit.
