Janghanpyeong Korean BBQ with rice balls, ₩2,000 table fee: Ilbeonji

In short

Ilbeonji Jeongyuk Sikdang Janghanpyeong Branch is a value-focused beef butcher restaurant on the main road by Exit 3 of Janghanpyeong Station in Dongdaemun, Seoul. Two diners shared the 900g small beef set (jageunso han mari) of buchaesal (top blade), sirloin and daepae (thin-sliced beef), with rice balls as a side, while the ₩2,000 per-person table fee covered doenjang jjigae and the self-serve banchan bar. For the quantity and the price, Ilbeonji delivered more than expected.

900g small beef set at Ilbeonji Jeongyuk Sikdang Janghanpyeong Branch, main shot

A budget-friendly 900g small beef set

On days when I'm craving beef, just deciding where to go feels like a job in itself. It's not easy to find a place that's both affordable and satisfying. This time I had a dinner appointment near Janghanpyeong Station and went looking for options, which led me to Ilbeonji Jeongyuk Sikdang Janghanpyeong Branch, known for its budget Korean BBQ. Here, even the small beef set alone gets you 900g across several cuts, so it's a great spot for anyone who loves beef. Here's my honest review.

Where Ilbeonji Jeongyuk Sikdang Janghanpyeong Branch is, and where to park

Ilbeonji Jeongyuk Sikdang Janghanpyeong Branch sits right on the main road, a short walk from Janghanpyeong Station Exit 3 toward Starbucks. The address is 18 Janghan-ro, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul. The restaurant is so large that anyone who's passed through the Janghanpyeong area often has probably noticed it at least once — it really stands out.

Drivers don't need to worry either. Parking is available in front of the restaurant, and there's a free valet service, so I could hand off the car and go eat without any hassle. Just note that extra charges may apply after normal meal hours.

Several cars were parked out front, and staff personally helped with the valet. Handing off the car and heading straight in to eat was really convenient, and not having to stress about parking was a big plus.

Even from the outside, the place is quite large, true to a butcher-style beef restaurant, so it's easy to spot from a distance.

Watching customers keep coming in even during dinner hour, I could tell this place is already well known in Janghanpyeong.

Stepping inside, I was surprised by how much bigger it was than I expected. There were plenty of tables, spaced generously apart, so I could eat comfortably without feeling cramped.

Since I visited during dinner hour, all kinds of customers kept coming in — families, coworkers out for a group dinner, you name it.

One side of the restaurant has a dedicated butcher counter, which really gave it that authentic butcher-restaurant feel, and the whole place was kept impressively clean.

Small beef set or large beef set — which should two people order?

The menu covers both beef and pork. Beef comes divided into a small set (작은소 한마리) and a large set (큰소 한마리), and you simply choose based on party size — nothing complicated. For 2–3 people, the small set looked plenty, while 4 or more would probably do better with the large set.

You can also order individual cuts à la carte, and there's a wide range of rice and side dishes to choose from. Since there were two of us, we didn't hesitate and went straight for the 900g small beef set.

Banchan and doenjang jjigae with the ₩2,000 table fee

The basic banchan (side dishes) were more varied than I expected. Shredded scallions, lettuce wraps, and other sides that go well with meat came out in a good spread, and best of all, doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) was included as standard — which I really appreciated.

The doenjang jjigae wasn't just a token side dish — it was packed with ingredients and stayed warm throughout the meal, pairing really well with the beef. Anything running low could be freely restocked at the self-serve bar, and staff kept checking in to see if we needed anything, refilling quickly whenever we did.

The table fee adds ₩2,000 per person, but given the range of side dishes and free refills, it felt more than worth it.

What comes in the 900g small beef set, and how it tastes

900g small beef set with galbisal, sirloin, and daepae

After a short wait, the 900g small beef set finally arrived. At first I briefly thought, "Isn't 900g a bit small?" — but that was a total misconception. It came loaded with a generous variety of cuts, plenty for two people to share.

Galbisal, sirloin, and daepae (thin-sliced beef) were all included in a well-balanced spread, each with a different texture and flavor, which made the meal more fun.

Try dropping the daepae (thin-sliced beef) into the doenjang jjigae

We started with the daepae. Thin enough to cook quickly, with a really nice nutty flavor — and when we saved some and dropped it into the doenjang jjigae, the broth got noticeably richer with an extra layer of savoriness. It was genuinely delicious.

I'd personally really recommend this combo.

The cut we remember most: buchaesal (top blade), then sirloin

Next we grilled the galbisal. I'd heard it can be tough, so I was a little worried, but as long as you don't overcook it, it turns out far more tender than expected, with the juices still intact. In fact, galbisal was the most memorable cut of the night.

The sirloin had just the right amount of fat, getting nuttier the more you chewed, and overall the meat quality felt quite satisfying for the price. We filled up faster than expected, so in the end we asked to pack up about half of it. They wrapped it carefully with ice, so we got it home still fresh and got to enjoy the leftovers just as much.

Finishing the meal with rice and rice balls

At the end, we ordered steamed rice to go with the doenjang jjigae, and the combo of rice with meat-infused stew broth was really satisfying.

The rice balls we ordered as a side were also fun to make ourselves, and the portion was generous, so I'd recommend ordering one if you're visiting with kids.

Would we go back to Ilbeonji?

This was my first time finding out there's such a good-value beef restaurant near Janghanpyeong Station. Even the small set alone gave us 900g across a variety of cuts, so the value for money was quite high, and the meat quality exceeded expectations. With the good basic banchan and doenjang jjigae rounding out the whole experience, it's a place I'd want to return to next time I'm craving beef. If you're near Janghanpyeong Station looking for a group dinner spot, a family meal, or just good-value Korean BBQ, I'd recommend giving Ilbeonji Jeongyuk Sikdang Janghanpyeong Branch a try.
