Jayang-dong pastry café in Seoul for olive cheese pastry: Stack Bakery

In short

Stack Bakery (Konkuk Univ. Station Main Branch) is a French-style pastry bakery café on Ttukseom-ro 31-gil in Jayang-dong, Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, where the dough is made in-store early every morning. After a visit to Ttukseom Hangang Park, the writer tried an iced americano, a zero-sugar peach ade, egg flan, hazelnut kouign-amann, pain au chocolat and olive cheese pastry, and the sweet-and-salty olive cheese pastry was the standout. Stack Bakery is a good stop before or after a Han River outing for pastries and coffee, whether you eat in or take them to go.

If you buy 4 or more breads at Stack Bakery, they give you pretty box packaging for free. If you want a box for individual items, it's just ₩2,000 extra, which makes a lovely gift. There's also an event where you get a free salty chocolate financier for writing a Naver receipt review, so give it a try.

How the bread and drinks at Stack Bakery tasted

For drinks we chose an iced americano and a zero peach ade, and we loaded up on whatever breads we felt like eating.

Iced americano, zero peach ade and the chosen breads

The iced americano at Stack Bakery was nutty with a clean finish, a great balance with sweet desserts. The zero peach ade came with sliced lemon for a zing of freshness, and it was cold and sweet enough to wipe out the heat.

Drinks and pastries spread out at Stack Bakery

Egg flan and hazelnut kouign-amann

The first thing we tried was the egg flan, with a really rich, pudding-like cream filling the middle of the pie. The soft texture and sweetness spread through my whole mouth.

With the hazelnut kouign-amann, you could feel the crunch of the syrup coating on the outside along with the flaky layers of the bread. The nutty flavor and sweetness went together really well.

Pain au chocolat and the must-try olive cheese pastry

The pain au chocolat had a deep, luxurious butter aroma. It's packed with sweet chocolate sticks inside, so it's a flavor pretty much anyone will like.

Last was the olive cheese pastry, which I enjoyed the most. The sweet-and-salty combination of tangy, salty olives, savory cheese and a sweet sauce was addictive, and I kept reaching for more. (It was the best one. Highly recommended!)
