Jongno office-lunch burger spot: wasabi mayo shrimp at Bas Burger

In short

Bas Burger Gwanghwamun is a handmade burger restaurant in Jongno, central Seoul, at the center of City Hall, Gwanghwamun, Euljiro 1-ga and Jonggak stations. The wasabi mayo shrimp set came with whole shrimp rather than a shrimp patty, the triple Bas Burger combo stacked three juicy patties, and James potato chips were unlimited for dine-in guests. With Bas lager on the menu, Bas Burger Gwanghwamun makes a good after-work stop in Jongno for a meal and a beer.

When you want something tasty but simple — not the usual chain burger, but a hamburger with some real character — here's a Jongno burger spot I'd recommend!

Bas Burger Gwanghwamun

Where is Bas Burger Gwanghwamun? Between City Hall, Gwanghwamun, Euljiro 1-ga and Jonggak stations

Bas Burger Gwanghwamun sits right at the center of four stations — City Hall, Gwanghwamun, Euljiro 1-ga, and Jonggak — so accessibility is excellent. The address is 5 Dadong-gil, Basement 1F Gwangil Building, Jung-gu, Seoul, South Korea. A great spot for Jongno office workers to grab lunch!

Before going in, I noticed posters on the door saying sauces are refillable and chips are unlimited refill — I walked in already excited.

Let me show you the interior. Apparently this neon sign is only kept on during the day.

There are lots of tables, and they're easy to push together, so it's a good spot for group visits.

Tablet ordering and unlimited James potato chips

You order via the tablet at your table, and ketchup, mayonnaise, and chips are self-serve — you just grab them yourself.

James chips are unlimited refill only for dine-in guests; if you're getting takeout, you have to order them separately. If it were me, I'd definitely eat in the store, no question!!

The chips were piled up like a mountain. I really love chips, so this service was amazing for me.

What to order at Bas Burger: wasabi mayo shrimp or crunch chicken burger?

Picking a menu item was really tough. The crunch chicken burger looked delicious too, so I went back and forth between the crunch chicken burger and the wasabi mayo shrimp burger — and ended up going with wasabi mayo shrimp!

One nice thing about ordering at Bas Burger is that you can choose to remove toppings.

We ordered the wasabi mayo shrimp set with the fries swapped for cheese bacon fries, and the triple Bas burger combo with the drink switched to Bas lager beer.

They said writing a Naver Map photo review gets you a stretchy mozzarella cheese bar, so I quickly wrote one up haha

Doesn't this look seriously delicious?!?!

Butterhead lettuce and the triple Bas Burger

One of the strengths of Bas Burger is that they use butterhead lettuce instead of regular lettuce. That means the lettuce's moisture doesn't seep into the bun and ruin the flavor of the other ingredients, and the texture feels softer too.

My husband ordered the triple Bas burger with all the basic vegetable toppings removed except the lettuce (butterhead lettuce), so it was just lettuce and three patties 😬

Looking at the cross-section, all you can see is meat, leaf, and bread.

According to my husband, who ate the triple Bas burger, the patties were incredibly moist and really delicious.

The Bas lager had a slightly different aroma from a regular lager, and it was tasty!

Wasabi mayo shrimp burger: whole shrimp, not a shrimp patty

I prefer shrimp burgers to meat patty burgers, so I chose the wasabi mayo shrimp burger, and what surprised me looking at it was that it wasn't a shrimp patty at all — it was just whole shrimp inside.

The wasabi flavor wasn't too strong, so even I, who's sensitive to wasabi, could enjoy the wasabi mayo without any issue, and the shrimp was seriously amazing. I really recommend the wasabi mayo shrimp burger at Bas Burger.

Another thing that sets this place apart from other burger joints is the brioche bun — this particular brioche bun felt especially delicious.

Look at that mozzarella cheese bar stretch.

An after-work burger and beer in Jongno

This was my first time trying Bas Burger, and between the unlimited chip refills and the genuinely delicious burgers, it was a satisfying meal! You can fill up on burger and enjoy chips and beer at the same time, so if you work in Jongno, you don't need to go to a separate bar after work — just come to Bas Burger Gwanghwamun 👍👍
