An after-work snack bar for a drink near Cheonggyecheon: Hyeonseoni-ne

Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch (현선이네 청계즉석점) is a snack bar near Cheonggyecheon where you can have snack-bar food with draft beer for ₩4,500. After work I was wondering where to go for a drink, and I found a really good spot. If you want a light stroll along Cheonggyecheon, a full stomach and an ice-cold draft beer, this is exactly the kind of place I had in mind. This time I went to Hyeonseoni-ne, known as a bar with great snack-bar food. The name sounds familiar, but once I got there I understood why people keep coming back. The ₩4,500 beer hit me harder than I expected, and I loved that instead of forcing myself to pick pricey bar food, I could just enjoy snack-bar dishes as my drinking snacks.

Hidden behind a tree through a small entrance like a secret hideout, this Cheonggyecheon snack bar, Hyeonseoni-ne~ Sundae (blood sausage) and tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) as drinking snacks, a great place to visit!

Is Hyeonseoni-ne crowded on a weekday evening?

I visited around 7pm on a weekday and it was already close to full. The Euljiro and Cheonggyecheon area is packed with office workers anyway, but it wasn't just foot traffic; it felt like the place has a firm reputation as a good spot to drink after work. It didn't feel like a student crowd. What stood out were adult office workers who had dropped by right after leaving work, chatting over a glass of draft beer with tteokbokki and sundae. A place where you can sit down comfortably after a busy day and eat and drink without pressure, so I could easily see why so many people come.

How to order at Hyeonseoni-ne, and the sundae with mixed innards

You can order at the kiosk next to the entrance! We ordered a good variety: sundae, tteokbokki, assorted fritters, gimbap (seaweed rice roll) and fish cake. As you can see in the photos, the table was already generous the moment it was laid out, and even though it's snack-bar food, it was more than enough as drinking snacks.

I asked for the sundae with innards like liver and lung mixed in, and the portion was really generous, so I was happy from the first look. Some places serve sundae with disappointing filling or a dry, crumbly texture, but the sundae here seemed good in quality and felt fresh overall. With the innards mixed in, it was fun to pick through, and it was much more filling as a drinking snack.

How spicy is the medium tteokbokki?

I ordered the tteokbokki at medium spice and it was better than I expected. The first bite felt slightly spicy, but the more I ate, the more oddly addictive it got. It wasn't so hot that it hurt my stomach at all; "deliciously spicy" is exactly the phrase for it.

Above all, the texture of the rice cakes was good. It didn't have the dryness of old rice cakes or the disappointing texture of cheap tteokbokki; the rice cakes themselves were chewy and firm, so the bite really came through. With snack-bar food, getting the rice cakes right changes everything, and I felt Hyeonseoni-ne has solid fundamentals there.

Assorted fritters, gimbap, fish cakes and the combo set price

The combo set at Hyeonseoni-ne is about ₩25,000, a reasonable price for two people having dinner and a drink. The assorted fritters also went very well with drinks. The crispy fritters are great dipped in the tteokbokki sauce, and just as satisfying picked up one by one. With the gimbap and fish cake too, it felt like a proper snack-bar spread. I liked this setup, where you can taste a bit of everything at once, much more than ordering items separately. At about ₩25,000, the combo set is easy on the wallet for two and a very reasonable price for a simple dinner with a drink.

A good route after a Cheonggyecheon stroll

The location near Cheonggyecheon is great too. Walking along the stream in the daytime and finishing the evening nearby with snack-bar food and a drink makes a really good route. After a light walk, a sip of warm fish cake broth, a bite of spicy tteokbokki and a piece of hearty sundae make the day feel nicely wrapped up. Having a place like this where you can drop in casually in the middle of downtown Seoul turned out to be a bigger plus than I expected.

The gimbap is simple, rolled in seaweed brushed with fragrant sesame oil and sprinkled with plenty of sesame seeds, and my chopsticks kept going back to it.

The atmosphere inside Hyeonseoni-ne

The inside of Hyeonseoni-ne has an old-school eatery vibe, and it felt a little cramped overall. But that actually came across as part of its charm. It isn't a spacious, stylish place, yet it feels like a hidden hideout, with a strange pull that makes you want to come back. It's crowded and a bit packed, but that also makes it lively and energetic, which seemed to suit shaking off after-work stress even better. The interior isn't over-decorated either, and that plain feel made it more comfortable.

₩4,500 draft beer: is Hyeonseoni-ne a bar or a snack bar?

The draft beer on the Hyeonseoni-ne menu board is just ₩4,500. With prices these days, that's a real bargain~

Above all, Hyeonseoni-ne is a waste to call just a "bar", yet calling it just a "snack bar" doesn't do justice to how good the drinking snacks are. It works for dinner, for a light drinking session, alone or with a group; that was my strong impression. Rather than forcing down a drink with expensive, mediocre bar food, drinking draft beer with proper snack-bar food felt far more satisfying. So I completely understand why people come here after work. Next time I take a stroll near Cheonggyecheon and want a no-fuss meal and a drink, I'd like to stop by again.
