Dongtan Station pho bar, Midnight Diner wood tones: Mibundang

In short

Mibundang Dongtan Station Branch (미분당 동탄역점) is a pho restaurant on the ground floor of the Richian Arcade at Dongtan Station in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. The writer and her husband arrived right at opening on a Sunday morning and ordered brisket pho, brisket-and-tendon pho and a mixed jeon (Korean pan-fried) platter, finding a clean, light broth, generous noodle and bean sprout refills and a quiet counter-seat atmosphere. Verdict: Mibundang Dongtan Station Branch is a solid pho spot near Dongtan Station for both solo meals and dates.

For a tasty date with my husband, this time we headed to Mibundang Dongtan Station Branch (미분당), a pho place near Dongtan Station. We did an opening run on Sunday morning, but the shop already had almost no empty seats. It's clearly one of those Dongtan Station spots with a line.

How do ordering and waiting work at Mibundang?

Whether it's takeout or dining in, you order at the kiosk outside the shop. If there are no free seats before you order, a wait forms, so I'd recommend an opening run rather than peak hours.

The neat, warm wood-toned exterior felt exotic, like a little late-night diner in Japan.

While waiting, there were parasols to block the hot sun and cold tea ready for us. Once you order at the kiosk and go inside, the meal comes out quickly.

Mibundang's atmosphere: good for eating alone?

Inside, every seat is a counter seat (dajji-seok), which felt like a clever use of space. There are hooks on the wall for bags and coats, and the sauces are set out on a shelf.

The cooking is open for you to see, which somehow made the broth's cleanness feel even more convincing.

Open kitchen and quiet interior of Mibundang Dongtan Station Branch

It's a place where everyone eats in a quiet, comfortable mood, so no loud voices or bustle. It was very calm and I could focus on the food alone. If you're looking for a solo-meal restaurant at Dongtan Station, I couldn't think of anything better.

What the two of us ordered at Mibundang

As a party of two, we ordered Mibundang's signature dishes.

  • Brisket pho (chadol-yangji ssalguksu) - packed with tender beef brisket and light, clean flank
  • Brisket-and-tendon pho (chadol-yangji-himjul ssalguksu) - brisket and flank plus a hearty topping of tendon
  • Mixed side platter (modeumjeonsik) - an assortment of sides including cha gio (fried spring rolls), wedding shumai and buffalo wings

The portions were so generous that "you eat and eat and it never goes down" is exactly right.

Food from the open kitchen is cooked cleanly and served fast. The quiet, unhurried kitchen and the counter seats were almost amazing to see.

How does the pho broth taste at Mibundang?

Mibundang's pho is loaded with meat but isn't greasy, and the broth is light with a clean, deep flavor. No wonder it's popular. It isn't harsh, with no heavy spice flavor and no greasiness, so it left me with a refreshing, settled-stomach feeling.

It's a noodle dish, but the amount of meat on top is enormous. The brisket and flank were tender, and the tendon was chewy, which my husband devoured.

Mixing it with hot sauce and hoisin

First sip the broth, then put noodles, bean sprouts and meat on your small plate and toss them with hot sauce and hoisin sauce (haeseonjang). It's spicy with just the right savory depth, haha. I also liked that you can adjust the heat to taste.

Can you get noodle and bean sprout refills at Mibundang?

Partway through the meal, the staff ask you first whether you need more noodles or bean sprouts. Just the meat on top already fills you up, yet quite a few people take refills, which amazed me!

They serve a generous bowl of noodles, bean sprouts and meat in broth, and I felt that refill alone could fill me up. If you eat a lot, give it a try! You'll be absolutely stuffed.
