Goyang Korean restaurant after a walk: Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu

In short

Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu is a Korean restaurant on Hoguk-ro in Deogyang-gu, Goyang. After walking around Seosamneung with my husband, I had refreshing mul-makguksu, nutty perilla buckwheat kalguksu, and assorted meat-and-kimchi dumplings. I enjoyed the meal, but fractured my toe after hitting a table leg on the way out.

After taking a light walk around Seosamneung with my husband, we had lunch at nearby Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu (봉평고향막국수). We had refreshing mul-makguksu (buckwheat noodles in chilled broth), warm perilla buckwheat kalguksu, and assorted meat-and-kimchi dumplings.

Was it easy to stop by by car after walking around Seosamneung?

I visited Seosamneung again after a long time. I had gone there with my children when they were young, but walking around with just my husband this time felt different in its own way.

After the walk, we were hungry and looked for Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu. The large sign was easy to see from the road, and there was parking space in front of the restaurant, so it was convenient to visit by car.

The address is 1128 Hoguk-ro, Deogyang-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi-do. The hours listed in the original post are 11:00–20:30, with a regular closing day every Monday. The restaurant also stated that takeout and group reservations are available.

What were the seating and atmosphere like?

The interior was more spacious than I expected, and the generous space between the tables made it comfortable. I visited on a weekday afternoon, and there were many older diners. I heard that the restaurant has operated at this location for 30 years.

How much did the makguksu and kalguksu cost?

The menu showed mul-makguksu, bibim-makguksu, and perilla buckwheat kalguksu at ₩11,000 each. Side dishes included boiled pork, buckwheat pancakes, and dumplings.

We ordered mul-makguksu, perilla buckwheat kalguksu, and assorted meat-and-kimchi dumplings.

How were the assorted dumplings as a side?

The assorted dumplings came first, letting us try meat dumplings and kimchi dumplings in one order. The wrappers were different colors, making them easy to tell apart, and they were fairly large, so they made a filling accompaniment to the makguksu.

We also ate them with kimchi and seasoned sauce.

How were the noodles and broth in the mul-makguksu?

The mul-makguksu arrived in a large bowl filled generously with buckwheat noodles and chilled broth. It was topped with a boiled egg, and the buckwheat noodles’ earthy flavor went well with the broth, making it a good meal after the walk.

This is a restaurant that makes its noodles in-house. A notice on the wall recommended eating the buckwheat noodles without cutting them because they are not tough. I tried eating them whole without using scissors.

What did the perilla buckwheat kalguksu taste like?

The dish I liked more than expected that day was the perilla buckwheat kalguksu.

The pale broth was full of perilla seeds, making it nutty and smooth. It was still hot during the day when I visited, but mornings and evenings were gradually becoming cooler.

Because the kalguksu used buckwheat noodles, it felt like trying something different from typical kalguksu. When the weather gets cooler and I start craving warm, nutty broth, I would like to come back for it.

Can you get more side dishes yourself?

There was a self-service station where we could take as much young-radish kimchi as we wanted.

What happened after the meal?

The meal was delicious, but I hit my toe hard against a table leg while leaving. At first, I thought it would hurt briefly and pass, but the pain continued, so I had an X-ray at a hospital. I was diagnosed with a broken and twisted toe bone, received treatment and a cast, and canceled a gathering with friends that had been planned for the afternoon.

After walking around Seosamneung, I enjoyed refreshing makguksu, nutty perilla buckwheat kalguksu, and filling assorted dumplings, but the day ended with an unexpected injury.
