Solo office lunch tonkatsu in Pangyo: yuzu wasabi at Katsu Shokudo

In short

Katsu Shokudo Pangyo Main Branch (카츠쇼쿠도우 판교본점) is a Blue Ribbon tonkatsu restaurant on B1 of Alpha Dome Tower 3 in Pangyo, Seongnam. On a late weekday lunch the writer walked in with no wait, took a wall-facing counter seat and ate the fillet katsu set with cold soba alone; the yuzu-aged fillet katsu was tender, and the tangy yuzu wasabi kept it from feeling heavy to the last bite. Katsu Shokudo Pangyo Main Branch is a good fit for office workers in Pangyo who want an easy solo tonkatsu lunch.

I was looking for somewhere to eat alone in Pangyo and this place looked good, so I went: Katsu Shokudo. I had the fillet katsu, and it was tender, and the yuzu aroma went so well with it that I never got tired of it! Even the set composition was great.

Katsu Shokudo has a Blue Ribbon: what's the wait like?

Katsu Shokudo Pangyo Main Branch is a tonkatsu (breaded pork cutlet) restaurant that has won the Blue Ribbon several times, and you queue through the Catchtable app. When I went on a weekday at a slightly late lunchtime, there was no wait.

One nice thing about Katsu Shokudo is that there's a menu board out front. I love not having to look it up on my phone in front of the shop. I was going in anyway, but I had a look haha

The waiting app is Catchtable! I went at weekday lunchtime, but maybe because it was a slightly late lunch, there was no wait!

Why Katsu Shokudo Pangyo Main Branch is great for eating alone

Katsu Shokudo Pangyo Main Branch has separate wall-facing counter seats for 1–2 people, so going alone feels no pressure at all. It also has tables from 2 to 6 seats, so groups and people with babies can come too.

Wall-facing solo counter seats at Katsu Shokudo Pangyo Main Branch

The reason Katsu Shokudo Pangyo Main Branch is good for solo meals is that it has these separate counter seats... and you face a wall, so you can honestly eat so comfortably! Perfect for 1–2 people!

Spacious table seating inside Katsu Shokudo Pangyo Main Branch

The inside is a lot bigger than I expected. There are tables for 2, 4 and even 6 people! Seems good for visiting as a group. Plus they have baby chairs, so it's good to come with a baby too. If you want to come as a group of 4 or more, you can book through Naver on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons, so I recommend reserving ahead!

Tablet ordering and à la carte vs. set menus

You order on the tablet in front of your seat and finish paying while seated. À la carte katsu comes with mini curry and soup, and sets come with udon or soba.

Every table has tissues, salt, shichimi (Japanese chili pepper blend) and wet wipes.

They even have hair ties for people with long hair, and floss to fix that uncomfortable feeling after eating. Such a thoughtful owner -

What's in the fillet katsu set (soba) at Katsu Shokudo, and how does it taste?

The fillet katsu set (soba) at Katsu Shokudo comes with 3 pieces of katsu, cold soba, rice, salad, wasabi, tonkatsu sauce, pickled mountain chili and pickled radish. The food also came out quickly after ordering.

The food took less time than I expected and came right out. I was reading the how-to-enjoy-it guide on the tablet and it arrived before I finished -

Yuzu-aged fillet katsu with pink salt and wasabi

Katsu Shokudo's fillet katsu is said to be patented for its yuzu aging, and it really was tender at the first bite. The oil drains off well so it's crispy, and dipping it in wasabi and Himalayan pink salt together was my favorite combination.

Cross-section of 3 pieces of yuzu-aged fillet katsu

The fillet katsu is served with each of the 3 pieces cut into 3. They say Katsu Shokudo has a patent for its yuzu aging, and at the first bite it was really tender and delicious! Personally, eating it with wasabi + Himalayan pink salt is the best. They drain the oil well too, so it's not too greasy and you get to eat it crispy!

Does yuzu wasabi go with katsu?

Yuzu wasabi served with the fillet katsu

The wasabi served alongside isn't just wasabi, it's yuzu wasabi! Wasabi with a yuzu scent? I thought it would be meh, but the fresh, sharp wasabi goes well with it, and it pairs nicely with the katsu too! If anything, the freshness meant I didn't get tired of eating.

Cold soba you can eat all four seasons

Cold soba included in the fillet katsu set

The soba is what you can choose in the set! It isn't a seasonal menu item, so I love that you can eat it even when it's not summer. The portion is just right to go with the katsu. A clean, easy flavor.

Pickled mountain chili and radish cut the richness

Tonkatsu sauce with pickled mountain chili and pickled radish

Along with the tonkatsu sauce, you also get pickled mountain chili and pickled radish. Even people who can't handle greasy food well could probably finish with these!

Katsu Shokudo in Pangyo was great for a solo lunch with its separate solo seats. The katsu was tender and delicious, so if you're looking for a good place to eat in Pangyo or Bundang, I recommend it!
