Why I chose Deo Chadol for lunch near the Gwacheon Science Museum
Deo Chadol (더차돌) is a duck brisket restaurant on Duitgol 2-ro in Gwacheon. It kept popping up while I searched for restaurants near the National Science Museum Gwacheon, so I went. I was on a day trip to Gwacheon and wondering where to have lunch, and since I was visiting the museum anyway, I looked nearby and it kept showing up, haha.
The place is Deo Chadol!! I'd heard it had been on TV, and then I heard it's run by an actual actor, so I went straight there!
Walls covered in celebrity autographs
Deo Chadol was also introduced as actor Ryu Seung-ryong's favorite restaurant on KBS's Baedalwassuda! Inside, the walls are covered with so many celebrity autographs that just looking around was fun.
With famous people's signatures plastered everywhere, I thought, wow, this really is a famous place. No wonder it kept showing up when I searched for good food near the Gwacheon science museum.
How long is the weekday lunch wait at Deo Chadol?
I got there around 11:30 on a weekday, a slightly early lunch, and there were already 3 parties waiting ahead of me. If it's like this on a weekday, I wonder how crowded weekends are, haha.
Still, the wait wasn't too boring and a table opened up faster than I expected. There may be a wait at peak hours, so if you're planning a Gwacheon outing, I recommend going a bit early!
Deo Chadol's menu and why I picked the duck brisket jjamppong
The menu ranged from duck brisket BBQ to duck jumulleok (marinated stir-grilled meat) and duck brisket jjamppong. With chadol (brisket) in the name, dishes built around duck brisket seem to be the main focus.
That day I wanted something a little different, so I ordered the duck brisket jjamppong. I was looking for a good place near Seoul Land in Gwacheon and wanted something special rather than the usual dishes, and I decided on this the moment I saw the menu!
How was the duck brisket jjamppong?
The duck brisket jjamppong at Deo Chadol had a spicy, deep broth that was cleaner than I expected. I had high hopes because it's said to be made by a top disciple of a former Blue House chef, a disciple of the well-known Chef Cheon Sang-hyeon...
Even with duck in it, I could barely notice that typical gamey smell. I never imagined duck and jjamppong would go so well together, but the mild duck brisket meeting that spicy broth makes it quite a treat! I enjoyed it a lot.
A generous portion
The portion was more generous than I expected, and I felt full after one bowl. If you eat a lot, a larger size seems like a fine idea.
When you think of a duck restaurant you usually think of grilled duck or jumulleok first, so having it as jjamppong felt distinctly different. I think it suits anyone searching for good food near the Gwacheon science museum who wants something special, haha.
Deo Chadol's self-serve bar and atmosphere
Deo Chadol has a self-serve bar stocked with wrap vegetables like lettuce and perilla leaves, so you can take as much as you want. If you order the grilled duck dishes, the bar's vegetables would go well with them.
The vegetables looked fresh, which I liked, and if I'd ordered the duck brisket BBQ or duck jumulleok, I'd have wrapped them in the leaves. The interior is clean and pleasant, so it feels easy to visit with family!!

Deo Chadol is close to the National Science Museum Gwacheon as well as Seoul Land, Seoul Grand Park and Korea Racecourse Park, so it works well as part of a Gwacheon day trip. For anyone looking for a place near Seoul Land in Gwacheon, it looks convenient to eat here and then head over.
It's a nice route for seeing the science museum and then having a good meal, like I did, and I think it'll come to mind whenever you're searching near Seoul Land and want to try a different kind of duck dish.
