Geojedo Grilled Fish & Ganjang Gejang: a grilled fish restaurant Geoje locals love

Geojedo Grilled Fish & Ganjang Gejang (거제도생선구이간장게장) sits on a quiet side street in Gohyeon, Geoje, but when we walked in at lunchtime it was packed with locals. Oh my, I thought it was a sleepy neighborhood, and inside it looked like all of Geoje was there! It's so quiet outside that I never would have guessed. We stopped by during our trip to Geoje.

We had a great meal, so here's my honest review.

Geojedo Grilled Fish & Ganjang Gejang hours and parking

The restaurant is at 17 Gohyeonhang 4-gil, 1st floor, Geoje-si, Gyeongnam, and it's open daily 11:00–21:20, with last order at 20:20. You can park on the roadside in front, and there's also plenty of parking space next to the restaurant.

They run their own blue crab processing plant and distribution, and they say they prep fresh ingredients every day. Let's go eat a clean, soft, moist, not-fishy meal. The price of the premium barley gulbi set looks good too.

Dining room and private room: good for groups?

The inside is huge, with tables for 4 and 6 and a big room, so it's a good place for company dinners, group gatherings and family get-togethers. I was surprised how big it is, and surprised again that it was full at lunch. The wood-toned interior feels calm, and the partition walls here and there give a bit of privacy, which I liked.

Right next to the entrance is a very big room. It's quite spacious too.

What side dishes are at the self-serve bar?

The self-serve bar has jeotgal (salted fermented seafood), ssam greens, pickles, fried items, fish pancakes, kimchi pancakes, gangdoenjang (thick soybean stew) and more. Wow!! As you walk in, there's a self-serve bar off to one side, and omg. Maybe because it's by the sea, there was a wide variety of side dishes and jeotgal, and so much food that looked delicious. Just looking at the bar made my mouth water.

I liked that there are high chairs in an easy-to-see spot near the entrance. Use them if you need one.

Menu and prices: how much is the weekend grilled fish set?

You look at the menu and order on the kiosk at each table. We ordered the weekend grilled fish set (2 or more people) for ₩17,900.

After we ordered, warm seaweed soup with mussels and clams came out with the side dishes. Clean and nice.

Spicy mala shrimp and tofu kimchi from the self-serve bar

We went straight to the self-serve bar after ordering. I wanted to try a bit of everything, so I brought back just a little of each: the jeotgal my husband loves, spicy mud shrimp (ddakseu-ae mala), chive pancake, napa cabbage pancake, kimchi pancake, sweet potato fritters, gimmari (glass noodle seaweed rolls) fritters and tofu kimchi.

The spicy mud shrimp... whoa, it's hot, hot! So hot, yet I want more, haha. My mouth was numb but it was delicious. The tofu kimchi had super soft stir-fried kimchi, exactly my taste!! The fried items were crispy and tasty too. And my husband ate the jeotgal he loves like crazy.

How were the grilled flounder, mackerel and cutlassfish?

The weekend grilled fish set came with grilled flounder, mackerel and cutlassfish, plus pot rice. Okay, okay, the main dish, the grilled fish, is here, so time to taste it. Golden brown, the look is amazing.

Oh, pot rice! This old lady really loves pot rice. The best part is the nurungji (scorched rice) after the meal! Scoop all the rice out, pour in warm barley tea, close the lid, and let's eat quickly.

Grilled flounder and mackerel, deboned by my husband

My husband, on his own, neatly picked out the flounder meat and handed it over for me to enjoy. The flounder was grilled beautifully golden, crispy near the tail and soft and moist inside. From the very first bite, it was a rice thief (so good you keep eating rice).

The mackerel was grilled nice and golden too. My husband deboned that carefully for me as well. Thank you, honey!!

Grilled cutlassfish: perfectly salted, as expected

As expected, cutlassfish! Grilled nicely golden and salted just right, this is totally a rice thief too.

It was served in easy bites, so eating was comfortable. Maybe because the fish were fresh, they weren't very fishy, just nutty, moist and so delicious. The seasoning was just right too, great with rice.

Ice cream dessert and verdict: is Geojedo Grilled Fish & Ganjang Gejang good value?

After the meal you can order a free dessert on the kiosk, so we finished with ice cream. The grilled fish was tasty, but the self-serve bar quality was really great too, and the ice cream to finish was really great.

Geojedo Grilled Fish & Ganjang Gejang is great value too, and I totally recommend it. It was the perfect filling meal. If you're a local or traveling around Geoje, do visit.
