Thai restaurant near Seongsu Station: pad thalay rice bowl, Thanon55

In short

Thanon55 is a Thai restaurant in an alley a 9-minute walk from Seongsu Station Exit 3 in Seoul, where two Thai women do the cooking themselves. On a rainy day, lunch was the seafood (pad thalay) stir-fried rice bowl (18,000 won), with large shrimp and squid and a vivid basil-and-chili sauce. Thanon55's pad thalay suits anyone looking for authentic Thai flavor rather than franchise-style fried rice.

Thanon55 is about a 9-minute walk from Seongsu Station Exit 3, tucked inside an alley. I went on a rainy day and the alley had a whole different mood haha.

Keep going along the alley and you'll spot a yellow sign. "Thanon55" is written in big letters, so you can't miss it lol. There's a glass cabinet by the entrance with Thai dolls and dishes, so it already feels like Thailand before you step in.

Go into the building and up the stairs to reach the restaurant entrance. There's an open, terrace-like hallway on the 2nd floor with an OPEN sign and dolls standing around. First-timers might get a little lost on the 1st floor, but just take the stairs up ❤️

This is what the inside looks like! The grey brick walls with an open feel were impressive. There are plenty of tables, and each one has a tablet.

There's also a yellow wall packed with Thai plates and a frame with Thai banknotes in it, so it's fun to look around.

On one side there's a blue dish cabinet stacked with Thai bowls and cups. Below it is a self-serve side bar. Just take as much as you need haha.

Aprons hang on the side wall too, so feel free to use one.

How does Thanon55's seafood pad thalay rice bowl taste?

At Thanon55 I ordered the seafood (pad thalay) fried rice bowl (₩18,000)! It comes on a blue Thai plate, generously loaded with rice, a fried egg and stir-fried seafood. The fried egg is drizzled with chili sauce, and it looked so good I got excited >0<

Two Thai ladies do all the cooking at Thanon55. And that means...? lol It tastes like the real thing you'd eat in Thailand!!! It has a different charm from the fried rice at Korean franchises. You know that taste that's a little unfamiliar... oh, wait, it's delicious..? haha. Overall it was really good. >0<

The pad thalay bowl has really big shrimp and squid. The sauce has basil and chili, so the aroma hits you right away. The nam pla prik (chili fish sauce) served alongside is there to add to your taste.

The rice is fluffy white rice, perfect for mixing with the sauce.

I picked up a shrimp and it was plump and springy with a great bite. The squid wasn't tough either, it was cooked tender 🤍

A spoonful of rice, squid and egg

Put rice, squid and egg together on one spoonful and it's seriously good ❤️

Is Thanon55 worth it for a Thai lunch in Seongsu?

If you're looking for a Thai restaurant in Seongsu, I really recommend Thanon55! Maybe because the locals cook it themselves, the aroma and seasoning feel just like Thailand. There are lots of rice noodle options so it's good as a Seongsu noodle spot too, and the prices are easy on the wallet, making it a perfect Seongsu lunch 🥹 Next time I'm going back for the pu phat pong curry ❤️
