Hongik Univ. Station bakery: sleepover snacks for friends, Mandong

In short

Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch (만동제과 연남점) is a long-loved bakery in the Yeonnam-dong area near Hongik Univ. Station in Seoul. Around 6pm, the writer bought six breads as sleepover snacks with friends: garlic baguette, walnut bread, yakbap bread (sweet rice bread), sweet potato bread, kaya coconut bread and corn mayo bread. The writer cut them up with scissors at a friend's place to share. The Mandong Jegwa garlic baguette vanished in no time, a taste worthy of such a long-popular bakery.

Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch: buying sleepover snacks with friends

I stopped by Mandong Jegwa (만동제과), the bakery in Yeonnam-dong near Hongik Univ. Station, for the first time in a while. I was meeting friends for a sleepover and we needed snacks to share~

Mandong Jegwa bread shelves around 6pm

What breads are left at Mandong Jegwa at 6pm?

Maybe because I went around 6pm, the selection had shrunk. Still, I jotted down the prices of what was left, one by one. Bum (butt bun, 엉덩이빵) ₩3,500, pretzel ₩5,000, salt soboro (streusel bun) ₩3,600.

Bum bun, salt soboro and pretzel on display at Mandong Jegwa

The salt soboro and the bum bun are both tasty, but I like the bum bun more.

Shrimp baguette on display at Mandong Jegwa

Shrimp baguette, ₩5,800. This one's really good too~

Jalapeño ciabatta on display at Mandong Jegwa

Jalapeño ciabatta, ₩4,800. I was thinking of getting this one, but~

Sweet potato bread on display at Mandong Jegwa

Sweet potato bread, ₩3,600. It's Mandong's recommended bread and one of my favorites, and it was out today~ The outside is like a soboro bun, and inside is sweet potato paste, so it's delicious.

Mugwort rice cake bread (ssoktteok ssoktteok) on display at Mandong Jegwa

Ssoktteok ssoktteok (mugwort rice cake bread), ₩4,900. It was one of the first breads I ever tried at Mandong. It has mugwort in it, but it's sweet and also nutty and rich from the nuts.

Red bean cream bread and injeolmi bread on display at Mandong Jegwa

Red bean cream bread ₩3,500, injeolmi (roasted soybean rice cake) bread ₩3,500.

Walnut bread on display at Mandong Jegwa

Oh, walnut bread, one of my favorites, ₩4,300! The price has gone up to ₩4,300 now, but it's so nutty and crunchy that I still recommend it. I bought it again this time~ Just one was left, true to its status as a Mandong hit, so I grabbed it right away.

Chestnut loaf on display at Mandong Jegwa

Chestnut loaf, ₩4,900. It's a loaf with chestnuts in it, so of course it's good.

Yakbap bread and chili sausage bread on display at Mandong Jegwa

Yakbap bread (yakbap is a sweet rice dish with nuts) ₩3,500, chili sausage ₩4,300. The chili sausage is like a sausage hot dog bun~ and the yakbap bread is a bread that's like yakbap. Of the two, I bought the yakbap bread.

Sweet pumpkin ciabatta, ₩6,200. A new item I'd like to try next time~

Corn mayo, emmental and basil tomato breads on display at Mandong Jegwa

Corn mayo, ₩4,900. It's a kind of salad bread. I bought it for my friend~ There were also emmental at ₩5,200 and basil tomato at ₩6,200.

Fig campagne on display at Mandong Jegwa

Fig campagne, ₩5,500. And Mandong's hit item, the garlic baguette, was available at the counter.

Sharing 6 Mandong Jegwa breads at a friend's place

I carried a bunch of Mandong breads to my friend's place to share~ First off, my friend ate the corn mayo the second she got it~

Mandong Jegwa kaya coconut bread laid out at a friend's place

I didn't get this one in the shop photos~ It's called kaya coconut bread, with jam inside and a coconut topping outside. I tried a sample and it was good, so I bought it.

Mandong Jegwa walnut bread in its packaging

Next is a bread I really love, walnut bread = hodu-ppang. Nutty and crunchy, the best~

Mandong Jegwa yakbap bread topped with nuts

This is the yakbap bread~~ It's packed with nuts, so it looks delicious, right?

And this is the sweet potato bread. No photo of the corn mayo, since my friend ate it all;;

Should you cut Mandong Jegwa's garlic baguette with scissors?

Mandong's garlic baguette comes with some cuts already made, but it isn't fully sliced, so I recommend cutting it again with scissors. For the final highlight, the garlic baguette, I brought out scissors to cut the breads and share them with my friends, and of course we started with Mandong's signature garlic baguette.

The garlic baguette looks sweet and fragrant at first glance,

Mandong Jegwa garlic baguette with pre-cut slits

It's a baguette base, so it's partly cut already, but not all the way through, so I cut it again with scissors. Let's cut in and taste it~

As expected of Mandong's flagship bread, it's moist, rich in savory depth, fragrant and sweet~ It's packed with garlic paste, so of course it's good~

My friends all said it was delicious, and it disappeared in no time~ It was so good I had one more piece myself~~ The best stuff really is best eaten first.

How do Mandong Jegwa's sweet potato, yakbap, walnut and kaya coconut breads taste?

Sweet potato bread: sweet potato paste inside a soboro crust

After the garlic baguette, the next bread I ate was~

Mandong Jegwa sweet potato bread, eaten after the garlic baguette

Mandong's sweet potato bread. The outside is like a soboro bun, but inside is sweet potato paste, so it's properly sweet~ Think of a green pea paste bun, then imagine it with a stronger sweet potato flavor.

Yakbap bread: torn by hand instead of cut with scissors

The third bread I bought at Mandong, the yakbap bread.

Mandong Jegwa yakbap bread, the third bread eaten

Yakbap bread is made like yakbap, so I just tore it by hand instead of using scissors~

Tearing Mandong Jegwa yakbap bread by hand

It has nuts on top and something nutty inside too~

Inside of Mandong Jegwa yakbap bread, full of nuts

I really enjoyed it~

Walnut bread: walnuts on the outside and inside

The fourth bread, walnut~

Mandong Jegwa walnut bread with walnuts inside

Mandong's walnut bread has walnuts both outside and inside, just as the name says. If you like walnut bread, I recommend it~!

Kaya coconut bread: coconut flakes and a sweet filling

The last bread is the kaya coconut bread~ Coconut flakes stick to the outside, which reminded me of a dujjonku (Dubai-style chewy cookie), and inside is something sweet, so you get the taste and aroma of the coconut flakes.
