Ikseon-dong bakery for grandma palates: mild coffee bread, Munhwa

In short

Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵) is a hanok-style takeout bakery on Donhwamun-ro in Jongno, Seoul, near Jongno 3-ga Station Exit 7. The writer visited around lunchtime, shared Munhwa Bakery's signature coffee bread with her boyfriend right away, and ate the garlic bread cold at a nearby café. Verdict: even for someone who avoids sweet bread, the coffee bread is hard to stop eating and the garlic bread stays moist after cooling, making Munhwa Bakery worth a return visit.

I woke up craving carbs this morning, so I decided to go on a bakery tour 😋 Today's bakery is Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵), famous as a great bakery in Ikseon-dong and Jongno 3-ga!! Jongno is a fun neighborhood to wander, with old alleys, lots of good restaurants and cafés all mixed together~! Honestly, I didn't expect much when I saw the photos before going, haha. But I found my life-changing bakery 😆❤️

Where is Munhwa Bakery and what are its hours?

Munhwa Bakery is at 65 Donhwamun-ro, 1st floor, Jongno-gu, Seoul, a 3-minute walk from Jongno 3-ga Station Exit 7, and it is open daily from 11:00 to 20:00. It is a takeout-only shop with no parking, so you need to use a nearby public parking lot. As you'd expect from an Ikseon-dong bakery, the outside is styled like a hanok (traditional Korean house).

Jongno 3-ga is easy to reach by subway and has lots to see and eat around it, so it makes a great outing. Munhwa Bakery is a nice stop when you're in Jongno!

What happens to Munhwa Bakery's leftover bread?

Munhwa Bakery bakes and sells everything the same day, and I heard the bread that doesn't sell is given to people in need, such as children who miss meals, elderly people living alone, people with disabilities living at home, free meal centers, homeless shelters and social welfare facilities!! But my first thought once I tasted it was... they can't sell this?? It smells like a total sellout 🤭

What are Munhwa Bakery's signature items?

I heard the main items at Munhwa Bakery are garlic bread, coffee bread and onion bagels. I went around lunchtime and there was a big variety of bread~! The first thing that catches your eye in a bakery is always the display, right? From snack breads to breads that work as a meal, bakeries have so many options, which I love 🤤 But why does everything look so good??

Wow, that coffee bread! In bakeries I usually see fresh cream bread?, but here it's coffee bread, which is unusual. At first I went "oh, interesting~", but that changed the moment I ate it! If you love bread, don't just grab your usual kinds, take your time and look for new ones too 👍

It would make a great casual gift too!! Jongno 3-ga is also a good area for hunting down restaurants or going on a date 😆 I heard Munhwa Bakery gives you a salt bread if you write a receipt review, so everyone should join in while you're there 😆❤️

Can a single bread be this exciting? hehe

Is Munhwa Bakery's coffee bread okay if you dislike sweet bread?

Munhwa Bakery's coffee bread is chewy, with just the right amount of coffee flavor, so it wasn't sweet at all and was just right. We couldn't wait, so my boyfriend and I rustled it out of the bag and ate it right away, haha. Perfect for me, with my granny taste (grandma-style preference for not-too-sweet food), haha. If something is even a little sweet I tire of it fast and stop reaching for it, but I keep reaching for this coffee bread... I agree, it's a great Ikseon-dong bakery!

Is Munhwa Bakery's garlic bread still good when it's cold?

Even eaten cold, Munhwa Bakery's garlic bread is filled with moist, lightly sweet garlic seasoning inside, so you never get tired of it and keep reaching for more!! I tore into it at a nearby café, and wow, if this had been warm I'd never have recovered... and it tastes like this even cold..!

Good to know before visiting Munhwa Bakery

The breads on display and the stock at Munhwa Bakery can change depending on when you visit, so if you want a specific bread, it may be worth checking before you go?! Next time I'll buy several breads, including the coffee bread and garlic bread! I think older people would love this bread too, and it made me think of my parents~~

When I visit a new neighborhood, I like experiencing the atmosphere you can only feel there~ Not just famous tourist spots, but looking around the shops nearby is one of the small joys of a trip or outing, haha. If you come to Jongno 3-ga, I hope you'll stop by Munhwa Bakery, the Ikseon-dong and Jongno 3-ga bakery! I really, totally recommend it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
