Daeyeon-dong pork soup, double-size offal bowl & suyuk taster: Geumsu

In short

Geumsu Dwaeji Gukbap Gyeongseong-Pukyongdae Branch (금수돼지국밥 경성부경대점) is a dwaeji gukbap (pork and rice soup) restaurant in Daeyeon-dong, Nam-gu, Busan, right behind Kyungsung University–Bugyeongdae Station, and the original writer says it is open 24 hours. The writer ordered a double-size offal gukbap and a suyuk (boiled pork) sampler, found the offal generous with almost no gamey smell, and refilled rice and noodles for free at the self-serve bar. Geumsu Dwaeji Gukbap is not fancy, but it is a Daeyeon-dong gukbap spot that gets the basics right and satisfies on portion size.

What kind of place is this 24-hour gukbap restaurant in Daeyeon-dong?

Geumsu Dwaeji Gukbap Gyeongseong-Pukyongdae Branch (금수돼지국밥 경성부경대점) is a pork soup (dwaeji gukbap) restaurant in Daeyeon-dong, Busan. It's open 24 hours, so you can go for breakfast or whenever you like. I love gukbap (rice soup), so whenever I spot a new gukbap place I have to stop by at least once. Geumsu is so well known that I'd known the name for ages, and this time I finally went in person. Being open 24 hours is a plus, but I was curious how the taste would hold up.

Location and how to get to Geumsu Gyeongseong-Pukyongdae Branch

Geumsu is right behind Kyungsung Univ.-Pukyong Univ. station (Bugyeongdae Station). You can find it almost as soon as you come out of the station, so access is really good. It sits in the middle of the Kyungsung and Pukyong university area, so I guessed it must get a lot of students too.

Inside Geumsu: is it okay for eating alone?

The interior was quite clean, and with plenty of tables it felt easy to eat alone without any pressure. When you think of a pork gukbap place you tend to picture a rough, rustic vibe, but Geumsu felt fairly tidy. As a 24-hour Daeyeon-dong restaurant, it seems like somewhere you could eat comfortably at any hour.

Geumsu menu and price range

The menu had the usual gukbap-house lineup: pork gukbap, sundae gukbap (blood sausage soup), offal gukbap, and a boiled pork set (suyuk baekban), among others. The menu was straightforward and the prices weren't too much of a burden.

Side dishes and the unlimited rice and noodle self-bar

At Geumsu's self-bar, not just rice but noodles too are unlimited. The side dishes came out first after ordering: kimchi, chives, onion and chili peppers, the standard setup at a gukbap place. But what impressed me here was the self-bar. Considering prices these days, it's a really generous deal.

A full table: large offal gukbap and sampler boiled pork

What I ordered at Geumsu that day was a large offal gukbap (naejang gukbap) and a sampler boiled pork (masbogi suyuk). Once everything was on the table, it made a much more generous spread than I expected. It looked just right for when you want a filling meal.

Geumsu's large offal gukbap: how are the portion and taste?

The large offal gukbap was packed with offal, and the broth was rich yet clean. Just from the first spoonful, the sight of it was overwhelming. Honestly, it lived up to the name "large." The offal had a tender texture and almost no gamey smell. If you like offal, I think you'd be very satisfied with this bowl. I've eaten quite a lot of gukbap, but a portion this big is hard to come by.

Sampler boiled pork: a good side to go with the soup?

The sampler boiled pork may be called a "sampler," but the portion was better than I expected, and the moist texture left an impression. It chewed soft with none of the dryness, and the savory flavor of the meat really came through. It was even better eaten with pickled onion or wrapped up in a leaf. It's a good side for when gukbap alone feels like not enough.

A place where the sheer amount of offal was truly overwhelming

Is Geumsu Gyeongseong-Pukyongdae Branch worth going back to?

Geumsu was a Daeyeon-dong gukbap spot that sticks to the basics. The clean interior, good access and generous portions all added up to high overall satisfaction. The large offal gukbap in particular was a big portion and great for a filling meal. The combination of offal with no gamey smell and rich broth was good too. The sampler boiled pork was moister than I expected and worked well alongside the soup.

Above all, the self-bar with unlimited rice and noodles was really impressive. In this day and age, a setup like that is a real selling point. Being open 24 hours is a plus too, so it's a good pick for a late meal or when you need something to cure a hangover. It isn't flashy or special in style, but it's a gukbap place that keeps the basics solid. If you're wondering where to eat near Kyungsung or Pukyong university, or just crave a hearty bowl of gukbap, I think this Daeyeon-dong restaurant will satisfy you.
