Mild beef vs. spicy seafood kalguksu in Suyeong: Paldo Shabu Kalguksu

Paldo Shabu Kalguksu (팔도샤브칼국수) is a shabu kalguksu (shabu-shabu with knife-cut noodle soup) restaurant near Paldo Market, close to Suyeong Station in Busan. On a rainy day, we ordered the mild beef shabu kalguksu (shakal), the spicy seafood shabu kalguksu (haekal) and a chive pancake to compare the two broths. With lunch specials of 7,000 won for shakal and 10,000 won for haekal, Paldo Shabu Kalguksu is worth a stop if you want a filling soup lunch for around 10,000 won near Suyeong Station.

Sancheong Jirisan pork belly BBQ in Daeyeon-dong, Busan: Donnamu Jip

Donnamu Jip (돈나무집) is a pork belly restaurant specializing in Jirisan pork, located in Daeyeon-dong, Nam-gu, Busan, in the Kyungsung University and Pukyong National University area. At Donnamu Jip, the 360g Jirisan pork belly plate (37,000 won) comes with scallion salad and grilled kimchi, and the meal also included village-style doenjang stew (soybean paste stew) and bibim noodles (spicy mixed noodles). The meat and side dishes showed solid basics while the bibim noodles were heavily seasoned. Donnamu Jip is not fancy, but it is a good neighborhood pork belly spot for soju with friends.

Morning offal pork soup by Kyungsung Univ, sundae & dumplings: Geumsu

Geumsu Dwaeji Gukbap Gyeongseong-Pukyongdae Branch (금수돼지국밥 경성부경대점) is a pork soup (dwaeji gukbap) restaurant near Exit 1 of Kyungsung University–Bugyeongdae Station in Nam-gu, Busan. On a third visit around 10 a.m., the writer ordered a regular-size offal soup (naejang gukbap) with sundae (Korean blood sausage) and 10 dumplings for 6,000 won. Even the regular bowl came with plenty of offal and a rich broth with almost no gamey smell. With rice and noodles refillable at the self-bar, Geumsu Dwaeji Gukbap's 9,500 won bowl is great value near Kyungsung University.

Bar in Seomyeon, Busan for a second round: crab egg soup at Yohai

Yohai is a spacious Korean food pub (yorijujeom) on the 2nd and 3rd floors of a building in the nightlife area near Seomyeon Station in Busan. On a second-round stop, the writer paired Soonhari Grapefruit Jin and Lemon Jin with crab egg soup, kept hot on a burner to the end, and soy sauce egg rice mixed with the yolk, a filling combination. If greasy bar snacks feel too heavy for a second round, Yohai's soup-and-rice combo is a safe choice.

Cocktail bar near Dongnae Station, Busan with owner-led games: Yahwa

Yahwa Busan Dongnae (야화 혼술바 부산동래점) is a cocktail bar for solo drinkers in an alley near Dongnae Station in Busan. Guests sit at a long bar counter, and the owner runs games that help them mingle with strangers. Cocktails mostly cost 11,000–18,000 won. The writer drank a gin and tonic, the signature Yahwa and a Tequila Sunrise, joined a pointing game and a card game, and went on to a second round with people met that night. Yahwa Busan Dongnae is a Dongnae bar worth remembering for nights when you go alone but want to chat and have fun with others.

Busan yakitori izakaya by Yeonsan Station: pork jowl & gyoza, Samajama

Samajama Yeonsan Direct Branch is a yakitori skewer izakaya near Yeonsan Station in Yeonje, Busan. After a dinner meetup, the writer stopped by Samajama for a second round and ordered the half platter (ginkgo, pork jowl, chicken wing and chicken skin), yaki gyoza (pan-fried dumplings) and grilled shishamo, and the pork jowl skewer was the highlight. Samajama Yeonsan is a good second-round bar for charcoal-scented skewers in a relaxed setting.

Seomyeon pork gukbap with fried set and 12-piece chicken: Sanbandeul

Sanbandeul Pork Gukbap (산반들 돼지국밥) is a pork gukbap (pork and rice soup) restaurant near Bujeon Library on Jeonpo Café Street in Seomyeon, Busan, known for a rich, ramen-like broth. On a third visit, the writer ordered a gukbap and assorted fried set upgraded to the signature Sanbandeul pork gukbap (14,900 won) and a large homemade fried chicken with 12 pieces (9,900 won), for 24,800 won in total, and the thick tonkotsu-style broth with crispy fried sides was still satisfying. With counter seating that makes Sanbandeul Pork Gukbap an easy solo meal in Seomyeon, it is worth returning to whenever ordinary gukbap gets boring.

Daeyeon-dong pork soup, double-size offal bowl & suyuk taster: Geumsu

Geumsu Dwaeji Gukbap Gyeongseong-Pukyongdae Branch (금수돼지국밥 경성부경대점) is a dwaeji gukbap (pork and rice soup) restaurant in Daeyeon-dong, Nam-gu, Busan, right behind Kyungsung University–Bugyeongdae Station, and the original writer says it is open 24 hours. The writer ordered a double-size offal gukbap and a suyuk (boiled pork) sampler, found the offal generous with almost no gamey smell, and refilled rice and noodles for free at the self-serve bar. Geumsu Dwaeji Gukbap is not fancy, but it is a Daeyeon-dong gukbap spot that gets the basics right and satisfies on portion size.

Seomyeon gukbap with tonkotsu-style broth and chive suyuk: Sanbandeul

Sanbandeul Pork Gukbap (Seomyeon Jeonpo Café Street Main Branch) is a pork gukbap (pork and rice soup) restaurant between Seomyeon and Jeonpo in Busan, styled like a Japanese ramen shop. Over one meal of bone-broth pork gukbap, summer mul milmyeon (cold noodles in broth), flame-grilled suyuk (sliced pork) and fried chicken, the bone broth tasted close to tonkotsu ramen, and the fried chicken, ordered with no expectations, turned out to be the surprise star. Sanbandeul Pork Gukbap suits anyone in Seomyeon looking for a different take on gukbap rather than the traditional kind.

Brunch restaurant in Gwangalli: free coffee before 11am at Vivid13

Vivid13 Brunch & Pasta Gwangalli Main Branch is a brunch and pasta restaurant near Gwangalli Beach in Suyeong, Busan. Visiting around 10am, the writer ordered the shrimp salad pasta and the herb chicken club sandwich (brunch dishes mostly 17,500–18,500 won) and, under Vivid13's before-11am offer of one coffee per menu item, got two free iced Americanos. The food isn't mind-blowing, but with the bright interior and the free coffee, Vivid13 is a satisfying morning brunch stop in Gwangalli.

Gwangalli pizzeria worth a return for red shrimp bisque: Extra Mile

Extra Mile is a pizza and pasta restaurant in a converted house on a residential street in Gwangalli, Suyeong, Busan. The writer returned to Extra Mile for the bisque cream pasta remembered from a first visit and ordered the Classic Combo (42,000 won): a half salad, half birria taco pizza plus the bisque cream pasta. At Extra Mile neither the pizza nor the pasta plays second fiddle, making it a Gwangalli Western restaurant well worth another visit.

Japanese food near PNU, Busan: sashimi feast with Dad, Moshi Moshi

Moshi Moshi PNU Branch is a Japanese sushi restaurant in Jangjeon-dong, Geumjeong, Busan, near the main gate of Pusan National University. The writer drove there with his father and ordered the upgraded sashimi feast at 34,900 won per person, which brought sashimi, sushi, tempura and udon in one meal. Moshi Moshi PNU Branch is not especially cheap, but its sashimi and sushi are both solid, making it a good Jangjeon-dong Japanese restaurant for a meal with parents.
