Yangjae eel restaurant for a post-work diet dinner: Jangsuchon

Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel (장수촌풍천장어) is an eel restaurant where staff grill the eel for you, tucked into a Dogok-dong alley near Exit 3 of Yangjae Station in Gangnam, Seoul. After work on a Friday, the writer and their partner ordered 1kg of salt-grilled eel (59,000 won) and ate it with black raspberry (bokbunja) salt and lettuce wraps, plus mushrooms and rice cakes grilled in the eel fat. Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel made for a filling, protein-rich dinner while dieting, leaving the two free to focus on conversation.

Gangnam ramen shop for regulars: tori paitan, tsukune chashu, Oreno

Oreno Ramen Gangnam is a Japanese-style ramen shop on the 2nd floor of an alley building behind CGV, near Exit 11 of Gangnam Station in Seoul. The writer, a regular who has paid for 4+ visits, went with a partner and ordered 2 bowls of tori paitan (rich chicken-broth ramen) with extra tsukune chashu, free extra coriander, and extra broth and kimchi. The verdict: Oreno Ramen Gangnam's rich chicken broth, thin noodles and tender tsukune chashu are reliably good every visit, making it a ramen shop worth returning to.

Garak Market fish shop, spring flounder trio to go: Yeongjae Susan

Yeongjae Susan is a live fish and seafood shop on the 1st floor of the Panmae-dong building at Garak Mall in Songpa, Seoul. A Busan-born blogger took home Yeongjae Susan's small spring-season trio of flounder, large olive flounder and large red sea bream (500g for 2) for 65,000 won on a weekend lunch, and found the flounder subtly nutty, the olive flounder chewy and the sea bream refreshing. The slice thickness and texture suited even a picky palate, making Yeongjae Susan the place to return to for spring flounder sashimi to go.

Yangjae pie shop, nut pies with hand-drip coffee: Hodu Kkakki Brothers

Hodu Kkakki Brothers (호두까끼형제) is a takeout-focused handmade nut pie shop in an alley near Exit 4 of Yangjae Station in Gangnam, Seoul. The writer bought the Premium Assorted Pie Whole (34,900 won) and tried its four pies (walnut, pecan, hazelnut cacao and macadamia cheese) at home with hand-drip coffee, and preferred them chilled from the fridge the next day. Hodu Kkakki Brothers' pies aren't overly sweet, so they make a good coffee snack or a gift for older relatives.

Nampo, Busan burger shop: reunion lunch with ex-coworkers, Downtowner

Downtowner Busan Lotte Gwangbok is a handmade burger shop on B1 of Aqua Mall at Lotte Department Store Gwangbok in Jung-gu, Busan. On a trip down to Busan for a friend's wedding, the writer met two former coworkers at Downtowner Busan Lotte Gwangbok and shared a Classic Cheese Double Patty, an Avocado Burger and a Downtowner Burger, enjoying Downtowner's distinctive patties and the short walk from Nampo Station. Downtowner Busan Lotte Gwangbok is a good handmade burger spot in Nampo for a lunch with people you haven't seen in a while.

Guui Station date café for a warmed egg tart: Wonz Coffee

Wonz Coffee Children's Grand Park Main Branch is a specialty coffee café in Gwangjin, Seoul, between Guui Station and Children's Grand Park. On a weekend date at Wonz Coffee, the writer had an orange cream latte, a cold brew latte, a warmed egg tart and a macadamia financier, and even after eating egg tarts to the point of boredom in Portugal, the writer was happy with the Wonz Coffee egg tart. Wonz Coffee is a café worth adding to a Children's Grand Park outing for coffee with baked sweets.
