Smoked jar BBQ combo set with family in Gwangyang, Ok-ryong
In short
Mamison Hangari BBQ (마미손항아리바베큐) is a smoked jar barbecue restaurant in Ok-ryong-myeon, Gwangyang, South Jeolla. The writer visited with family after the local anghovy festival and ordered the half-and-half combo with pork belly, galbi, rockfish, and shrimp, all smoked in jars and then briefly warmed on the tabletop grill so there was no smoke to deal with during the meal. With baby chairs on hand, it's a solid pick for family dining with young kids in Gwangyang.

Went to Gwangyang for the anchovy festival, looking for a BBQ spot nearby
Hi everyone! I went to Gwangyang with my family for the anchovy festival, all of us together for the first time in a while.

The festival was so crowded it was hard to even grab a meal, so while looking for somewhere nearby I found Mamison Hangari BBQ. It uses a different method of barbecue than the usual grill houses, so I was curious.

Ordering the half-and-half combo — meat plus rockfish and shrimp
We wanted to try a bit of everything that day, so we went with the half-and-half combo set. Everyone wanted something different, so a menu that lets you sample several kinds at once made the meal much easier.

I'm a person who loves shrimp, dad loves meat, mom loves fish — a perfect setup for our family 🤍

How do you eat jar-smoked BBQ?
After a short wait, the smoked barbecue came out looking delicious.

Unlike a regular grill house where you cook raw meat on the grill from the start, the special thing here is that the meat arrives already smoked!

Instead of eating the smoked meat as is, you place it on the tabletop grill just to warm it up a little. No need to cook it for long — just warm it to a good eating temperature, which made things easy.

Why it worked well with a baby along
Since we came with our baby, it was really nice that there was no meat smoke at all. Families with babies know how hard it is to pick a place to eat out 🥺 And best of all, at a regular grill house one person usually has to keep grilling the whole time, but here since you're just warming already-smoked meat, we could sit and chat with family for the first time in a while — a relaxed meal.

Pork belly and galbi flavor, paired with the spicy sauce
We tried both meats — pork belly and galbi — one of each, and the subtle smoky aroma gave them a different feel from the usual grilled meat.

The warmed meat tasted clean and mild on its own, but I especially loved dipping it in the spicy sauce. The kick paired well with the meat and cut through any greasiness left in the mouth, so my hand kept reaching for more. Personally, this combo was the most memorable part — the best.

Was the portion generous?
Above all, the portion was much bigger than expected, and we ate until we were completely full. Seriously, so much meat that our stomachs were stuffed.

The doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) was so good that I, not usually a rice-mixing person, mixed rice into it, haha 🤍

Café and pension discounts after your meal
Beyond the meat, getting to eat rockfish and shrimp too made the meal more fun. After eating, you can get 20% off at Nocturne Café and Geumbit Café in Ok-ryong, Gwangyang, and 10% off your total meal amount at Ok-ryong Hanok Village pension — great for pairing a family outing with a café stop afterward.

+ There's also a variety of event draws available.

Wrap-up — how was it as a family dining spot in Gwangyang?
This is a genuine review from a visit and meal I paid for myself with my family, so if you're looking for a place to eat out with family in Gwangyang or want a hearty, different kind of barbecue, this could be worth checking out. Being able to try rockfish and shrimp alongside the meat meant everyone could pick their own favorite, and on a hot summer day, not having to sweat over the grill while tasting a little of everything kept the meal fun the whole time. I really love restaurants like this! Most of all, getting to sit and chat comfortably with family after a while made it even more satisfying. Had another delicious meal with family today!!
