When I crave a proper Korean set meal in Daegu, one place always comes to mind: Geumdeungeo Deulanguil Main Branch. This time it was just my husband and me, but honestly, this isn't a place we visited once and moved on from — it's become our regular spot.
We'd been here before for my mother-in-law's birthday, with all eight of us in the family. When you're picking a restaurant for an occasion with elders, you end up fussing over everything from the food to the atmosphere, and we all had such a comfortable meal that day that I naturally thought of Geumdeungeo again. This time it wasn't a big family occasion — just the two of us having a cozy meal — and it was just as comfortable as a couple.
When it was the eight of us for my mother-in-law's birthday, the place handled a bigger group just fine too. It had been a while since the whole family gathered, so we talked a lot over the meal and had a really good time.
Maybe that's why, even coming here just the two of us this time, it felt familiar and comfortable. The biggest strength of this place for our family isn't that it's a one-time-taste-and-done kind of restaurant — it's the place we think of again whenever there's a family gathering.
I also liked that you get to enjoy several dishes rather than just one menu item. Tasting your way through the neatly arranged dishes naturally makes the meal feel abundant, and with rice it's a hearty meal too.
Arriving at the 11am opening and using the banchan bar
We did an opening run at 11am and were the first ones in. By around 11:30 nearly every table fills up, so I'd recommend booking ahead.
The best thing about this Deulanguil favorite, Geumdeungeo Deulanguil Main Branch, is the banchan (side dish) self-bar. These aren't filler side dishes for show — every single one is delicious and could hold its own as a main dish.
Geumdeungeo menu, prices and what the couple ordered
The hwadeok (fire-oven) grilled mackerel set is ₩19,000 per person, the spicy pork stir-fry set is ₩20,000 per person, adding spicy pork stir-fry is ₩9,000, and adding cockle salad is ₩9,000.
Our order was two servings of hwadeok grilled mackerel plus a spicy pork stir-fry and a cockle salad.
Not long after we ordered, a serving robot rolled out with the side dishes.

Here's the whole table set. Even a king's royal table would be jealous. Honestly, the grilled mackerel alone would be enough — the side dishes are already plentiful and so good.
But if it's a special family gathering or a get-together with friends, definitely add the spicy pork and cockle salad. It makes the meal so much more abundant.
The smoky, fire-grilled spicy pork stir-fry (₩9,000) comes in a pretty generous portion.
The cockle salad (₩9,000) is sweet and tangy and genuinely delicious — highly recommend! This portion is also quite generous.
And the star, the mackerel!! No need to say more — it's every bit as good as the main dish should be.
With three main dishes on the table, it really does look like a feast.

Coffee and sweets after the meal
Piling the cockle salad onto gim (seaweed) is so good 👍 After the meal you get to enjoy coffee and light treats, which is such a nice touch. Since there was a wait, they poured our iced coffee to go so they could turn the table over quickly for waiting guests.
