Beef restaurant near Mapo Station with free patbingsu: Mapo Mokjang

In short

Mapo Mokjang is a long-running beef restaurant a 3-minute walk from Exit 3 of Mapo Station in Seoul. The 600g emperor rib set ordered half plain and half marinated, plus 200g of beef tartare, came to 83,000 won, and Mapo Mokjang added free kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) and patbingsu (shaved ice dessert). The charcoal fire runs hot, so the plain ribs taste nutty and the marinated ribs sweet-salty — for a first visit, the half-and-half order is the right call.

Today I went to Mapo Mokjang, near Mapo Station 🙌

Visit to Mapo Mokjang, a Korean BBQ restaurant near Mapo Station

It's known as one of the old-school beef restaurants in Mapo, and I heard you could order the emperor rib meat as half plain, half marinated, so I had to check it out haha. We ordered the emperor rib set 600g half-and-half plus beef tartare 200g (₩83,000) 🥩

Interior of Mapo Mokjang with its old-school atmosphere

Inside an old-school Mapo beef house — does it work for a group dinner?

Inside, Mapo Mokjang doesn't feel like one of those new-style BBQ places — it's got that classic old Mapo beef restaurant feel haha.

A table at Mapo Mokjang with the charcoal grill lit

Every table has its own charcoal grill, and the whole place has a relaxed vibe good for eating meat, so it also looked like a solid spot for a work dinner or gathering near Mapo Station!

Here's the menu 🥰

What side dishes come with the meat at Mapo Mokjang?

After ordering, they set up the basic side dishes first — pickled onion, cabbage salad, garlic, salt, ssamjang (dipping sauce), and other things to eat with the meat 🙌

They also give plenty of lettuce and peppers, and scallion shreds come separately! I love scallion shreds with meat, so this setup made me really happy lol.

How much meat is 600g of emperor ribs, half and half?

And here's what we ordered — the emperor rib set 600g half-and-half‼️ Plain and marinated rib meat come out on one plate together, and since it's 600g, the portion was bigger than I expected 😆 It's hard to pick just one flavor, so being able to order half-and-half was the best part haha.

The marinated ribs come soaked in a light sauce with sesame seeds sprinkled on top — it looked delicious even before grilling… 🥹

You can really see the marbling on the plain ribs! We grilled the plain ribs first, before the marinated flavor could mix in 🙌

Plain rib meat: charcoal-seared just golden on the outside

The charcoal grill had strong heat, so it cooked fast! Beef is such a waste if overcooked, so we seared just the outside golden and ate it right away haha.

You can see the juiciness just by looking at it 🥩 The plain rib meat had no gamey smell, was savory, and released more juice the more you chewed! It was delicious dipped lightly in salt or even just eaten plain 🫶

Grilled over charcoal, the outside had a slight smoky char while the inside stayed tender, so I kept eating piece after piece lol.

Wrapping it with scallion shreds on top gave a totally different feel‼️ Eating meat alone can get a bit greasy, but the spicy scallion shreds balanced it out perfectly haha.

Marinated rib meat: keep flipping it on the grill

After the plain ribs, it was time for the marinated ones! The marinade burns easily on the fire, so we put on a little at a time and flipped often 🔥

If the plain ribs were savory and clean-tasting, the marinated ribs were sweet and salty — a totally different experience. Personally I can't give up either one lol, so if it's your first visit, I'd recommend the half-and-half emperor rib set 🙌

200g Korean beef tartare (yukhoe), mixed with the egg yolk

We also ordered 200g of beef tartare! The portion was bigger than expected, which surprised me, and it was great for picking at little by little while the meat grilled haha.

The tartare had a vivid color and came sprinkled with sesame seeds on top.

And the egg yolk served separately gets plopped right in the middle‼️

Mix in the yolk and it gets way richer 🥹💕 The tartare wasn't overly sweet or strongly seasoned, and with the egg yolk it went down really smoothly.

At 200g, the portion was generous enough to share with a group! I was glad we ordered the beef tartare alongside the emperor ribs — both were great haha.

The free kimchi jjigae and patbingsu at Mapo Mokjang

In between, we also had some hot kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) 🔥 (complimentary) — eating beef can get greasy, so a bowl of spicy kimchi jjigae here and there got us ready to dive back into the meat lol.

It was also delicious eaten with meat and scallion shreds together!

And to finish, patbingsu (shaved ice dessert)‼️ (complimentary) After eating so much meat and sitting by the charcoal fire, we were warm, so the cool patbingsu at the end felt like the perfect finish haha.

Is Mapo Mokjang worth it? Final verdict

Overall, the portions were generous and I was satisfied being able to try both the plain and marinated rib meat at once at Mapo Mokjang!

The plain ribs were savory and tender, while the marinated ones were sweet and salty — such different styles that I was glad we went half-and-half haha. On top of that, we had 200g of beef tartare too, so we left having eaten our fill of beef 😆 If you're near Mapo Station looking for a Korean BBQ spot or a place for a work dinner in Mapo, this one's worth a visit 🫶
