I don't care about a 3-story building, I care about 3-tier hanwoo!

What kind of restaurant is Hwahyangsori in Doan-dong?
Hwahyangsori is a charcoal-grilled hanwoo (Korean beef) cow specialist in Doan-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon. Good-quality meat plus the aroma of charcoal lets you really enjoy the natural flavor of the beef, and the atmosphere works for family meals, company dinners or special days.

If you're looking for a beef restaurant in Doan-dong where you can really taste hanwoo's tender texture and rich flavor, come to Hwahyangsori 🥩

Hwahyangsori's atmosphere and seating
Hwahyangsori is a small, tidy restaurant with about 10 tables. There are no private rooms, but the tables are spaced well enough that it never felt cramped.
It felt less like a huge, bustling barbecue joint and more like a comfortable place to enjoy hanwoo, good for family meals, get-togethers with friends and small company dinners. The charcoal-lit grills and the neat interior got me excited even before the food arrived.

What's on the Hwahyangsori menu?
The signature menu is the hanwoo cow set, split into A, B and C sets so you can pick by party size. That made ordering easy no matter how many people came.
They also have fresh yukhoe (beef tartare) and beef sashimi, which I'd recommend if you love the pure taste of hanwoo! For meals there's hanwoo yukgaejang (spicy beef soup), bibim naengmyeon (spicy cold noodles), hanwoo doenjang-jjigae (soybean paste stew), dessert naengmyeon and nurungji (scorched rice), which makes a clean finish after the meat!

Hwahyangsori is said to be a hanwoo specialist serving carefully selected top-grade hanwoo cow with 27 years of know-how. It has its own butchering room and aging room inside the restaurant, which added to my trust in how the meat is handled, and you can feel the effort to keep prices reasonable.

Does Hwahyangsori charge a table fee, and what side dishes come with it?
Hwahyangsori serves side dishes with no table setting fee, and the sides were satisfying too. Instead of typical barbecue-joint banchan, 6 kobachi-style small dishes, the kind you'd see at a Japanese restaurant, came out neatly, each one cleanly plated, and I felt well looked after.

What's inside the 3-tier box of the Hanwoo Cow A set?
The Hanwoo Cow A set I ordered came in a square 3-tier box. The first tier held vegetables that grill well over charcoal, such as eggplant, king oyster mushrooms and garlic, and on the second tier, a ribeye with shrimp-cut meat attached sat right there!
- Tier 1: grilling vegetables such as eggplant, king oyster mushrooms and garlic
- Tier 2: ribeye with the shrimp cut attached
- Tier 3: a variety of cuts including raw chadol (brisket), upjinsal (belly) and salchisal (chuck flap)
The third tier held cuts like raw chadol, upjinsal and salchisal, so I got to enjoy several textures and flavors at once. The set is made up of whichever hanwoo cow cuts are in the best condition that day, such as galbi deotsal (rib finger meat), neukgansal (rib meat), ribeye, raw chadol and upjinsal, and some of it may change depending on meat supply.
Instead of piling everything on one plate, the cuts are separated tier by tier, which looks great and makes choosing which cut to eat first fun. I think this is a presentation special to Hwahyangsori.
Is the 400g A set for 72,000 won good value?
The A set is 400g for ₩72,000, which works out to enjoying hanwoo cow for about ₩30,000-something per person. At many other hanwoo restaurants, cuts like salchisal, neukgansal or galbi deotsal alone can run ₩20,000-40,000 or more per 100g, so a set with shrimp-cut ribeye and a bit of several cuts at this price felt like pretty good value.

How do raw brisket and shrimp-cut ribeye taste grilled over charcoal?
I started by putting the raw chadol on the grill. Just hearing it sizzle over the charcoal got me excited ♥️ It cooks quickly, and I took one piece and dipped it lightly in salt only! The nutty richness of the fat filled my mouth and the deep flavor typical of hanwoo came through well.

The ribeye with the shrimp cut attached was impressive too. Infused with charcoal aroma, it had a tender texture and plenty of juice, and the nutty flavor got stronger the more I chewed. A little salt was enough to enjoy the natural taste of the beef, and with wasabi it had a clean yet deep savoriness!

Why Hwahyangsori's hanwoo tastes so good: charcoal grilling
The reason Hwahyangsori's hanwoo impressed me even more was, of course, the charcoal grilling. The strong heat locks in the juices and sears the outside appetizingly, while the subtle charcoal aroma lifts the charm of each cut. Even with the same hanwoo, grilling over charcoal makes the depth of flavor clearly different 🔥🥩✨

Who should eat at Hwahyangsori in Doan-dong?
Hwahyangsori is a beef restaurant in Doan-dong where you can enjoy carefully selected hanwoo cow grilled over charcoal. It runs its own butchering and aging rooms with care for the meat, and I was happy with the neat kobachi-style table setting and the set composition that lets you try various cuts!
With everything from shrimp-cut ribeye to galbi deotsal, neukgansal, salchisal and upjinsal available without a heavy price, I'd recommend it for family meals or gatherings! If you want to try good hanwoo at a reasonable price, Hwahyangsori is worth a visit.
