Sunday ₩2,000 lunch special at Ok Doenjang, Suwon Hommaesil restaurant
In short
Ok Doenjang Suwon Hommaesil Branch is a doenjang hot pot and suyuk hot pot restaurant on the 1st floor of Leaders Building in Hommaesil, Gwonseon-gu, Suwon. On a Sunday lunch visit the ₩2,000 lunch special discount applied, and ordering beef doenjang hot pot for two (₩22,000) together with mixed suyuk (boiled pork) hot pot (₩13,000) made it easy to compare the deep, savory doenjang broth against the clear, refreshing suyuk broth. Neither dish is spicy, so it works well with children, and the 'Mom's Kim' seaweed served as a side dish was good enough to buy a pack to take home.

Today I'm bringing you an honest review of Ok Doenjang, a Hommaesil spot known for doenjang (fermented soybean paste) hot pot and suyuk (boiled pork) hot pot :0

Where is Ok Doenjang Suwon Hommaesil Branch, and when is it open?
Ok Doenjang Suwon Hommaesil Branch is on the 1st floor of Leaders Building, 219 Geumgok-ro, Gwonseon-gu, Suwon. It's open daily from 11:00 to 23:00, with a break time of 15:00–16:30 on weekdays, and last order is 22:00 Monday through Saturday, 21:00 on Sundays. You can park in the lot inside Leaders Building.

This Suwon lunch spot is located inside the Lotte Cinema building at Leaders — come out toward the St. Mary Hospital exit, turn right, and you'll see it right on the corner!

Ok Doenjang has such a wide range of dishes from suyuk to hot pot that I had a hard time deciding haha. It's been so hot lately and I've been feeling drained and worn out, so I was craving something restorative — and that calls for suyuk hot pot!

Inside Ok Doenjang: the dining room and the side dishes
True to its name, the interior of Ok Doenjang Hommaesil had accents of jade (옥) green and soybean-paste brown, and thanks to the lighting the space felt warm and cozy.

The basic side dishes at this Hommaesil lunch spot are seasoned bean sprouts, stir-fried kimchi, seaweed, and sauce — none of them too heavily seasoned, so it felt like eating a home-cooked meal. That seaweed especially was a total winner, I ate a ton of it,,, if you run out, just ask the staff and they'll bring more right away.

What we ordered on Sunday and how the ₩2,000 lunch discount works
From the menu I picked their signature beef doenjang hot pot for two along with a small mixed suyuk hot pot. I visited on a Sunday for lunch, and the lunch special got me a ₩2,000 discount — yay! '0

Ok Doenjang Hommaesil also has a pretty extensive drinks menu — traditional liquors, makgeolli, highballs, soju, beer... it really seemed like a great spot for a drink alongside your meal (I really wanted to try the Cheongok highball but held back,,,)

Beef doenjang hot pot for two, ₩22,000
Beef doenjang hot pot for two, ₩22,000
The amount of meat doesn't come across in photos,,, the pot was packed with beef, minari (water dropwort), tofu, and all kinds of vegetables. The doenjang hot pot balanced the slight bitterness of the minari with the savory depth of the doenjang really well, and it wasn't spicy at all, so I polished off a whole bowl of rice. Leave out the chili flakes and I think even kids could enjoy this.

Mixed suyuk (boiled pork) hot pot, ₩13,000
Mixed suyuk hot pot, ₩13,000
This one had minari, wood ear mushrooms, aron sasal (beef shank), and jjuk (beef tendon). The broth was clean and refreshingly light, and the beef shank was tender rather than chewy, so even Roni, who's not a big meat eater, ate it up happily. This suyuk hot pot is perfect as a single-serving lunch dish. It's my personal favorite '-

'Mom's Kim' seaweed: the side dish you can buy by the pack
The seaweed at Ok Doenjang Hommaesil was genuinely delicious, and it turns out they sell it separately. It's called 'Mom's Kim' haha. Roni ate so much of it that I ended up buying a pack to take home. They also sell bugak (fried seaweed snack) and sesame oil, so ask the owner if you'd like to buy any.
Doenjang hot pot or suyuk hot pot — which should you order?
What I liked most, from the side dishes to the main dishes, was that nothing was too heavily seasoned overall. Maybe that's why my stomach felt comfortable even after eating. It was also great to eat with my kid, and since hot pot lets you enjoy warm broth and meat together, it made for a satisfying meal even on a hot day like this.
I was extra happy because ordering both hot pots let me compare the flavors — the doenjang hot pot has a savory, clean taste, while the suyuk hot pot is light and refreshing, so you can pick based on your preference!! Next time I want to visit with family and try the ox-tail suyuk, which they only sell ten servings of per day. I'm curious how good that must be haha.
If you're trying to decide on lunch in Hommaesil, why not try the doenjang hot pot or suyuk hot pot at Ok Doenjang? They deliver too, so if visiting the restaurant is hard, go ahead and order delivery :0
