Gwacheon seaweed soup restaurant, perilla beef soup set: Haenon Miyeok

Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch (해논미역 과천직영점) is a Korean restaurant on Araetbaerangi-ro in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi, that specialises in seaweed soup (miyeok-guk) set meals. The writer rarely went to seaweed soup restaurants, but tried the beef seaweed soup set (18,000 won) and was pleasantly surprised by the rich, nutty broth made with perilla seed powder and the neat basic banchan (side dishes). Verdict: Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch is a good choice for a family meal with parents when you want clean, filling Korean food.

Dongtan kalguksu group seating for a meal with Grandma-in-law: Yubok

Yubok Haemul Kalguksu Dongtan Direct Branch is a seafood kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) restaurant with pufferfish broth on Dongtangongwon-ro 3-gil in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. A family of four, including the writer's husband's grandmother, shared seafood kalguksu for 3, flame-grilled webfoot octopus stir-fry for 2, a perilla leaf pancake (₩11,000) and a webfoot octopus seafood chive pancake (₩17,000) at a group table, and the octopus was tender enough for Grandma to enjoy. Allowing for the spiciness, Yubok Haemul Kalguksu is a solid choice for a weekend family meal with older relatives.

Sunday ₩2,000 lunch special at Ok Doenjang, Suwon Hommaesil restaurant

Ok Doenjang Suwon Hommaesil Branch is a doenjang hot pot and suyuk hot pot restaurant on the 1st floor of Leaders Building in Hommaesil, Gwonseon-gu, Suwon. On a Sunday lunch visit the ₩2,000 lunch special discount applied, and ordering beef doenjang hot pot for two (₩22,000) together with mixed suyuk (boiled pork) hot pot (₩13,000) made it easy to compare the deep, savory doenjang broth against the clear, refreshing suyuk broth. Neither dish is spicy, so it works well with children, and the 'Mom's Kim' seaweed served as a side dish was good enough to buy a pack to take home.
