Dog-friendly family pension on Sido Island, Incheon: Poolside Pension

Poolside Pension is a dog-friendly, ocean-view pension (Korean-style holiday guesthouse) right in front of Sugi Beach on Sido Island, Bukdo-myeon, Ongjin-gun, Incheon. The writer, her husband and her son packed no food and instead ordered takeout chicken and spicy chicken feet tteokbokki from Jadam Chicken and Haepaedang on the ground floor, then enjoyed the sea through the picture windows and the stars over the night sea. With kiosk check-in, ground-floor restaurants and a tidal flat right outside, Poolside Pension proved an easy base for a family island trip near Seoul.

Dongtan indoor zoo with a third grader: 7-feed full set at Artis

Artis Theme Park (아르티스테마파크) is a hands-on indoor zoo on the 9th floor of Sinyu Medi Plaza in Dongtan, Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. With the 7-feed full set (6,900 won), a third-grade boy packed his own feed lunchbox and fed and touched reptiles, meerkats, horseshoe crabs, rays and parrots at Artis Theme Park. Verdict: Artis Theme Park has enough species to keep even an older elementary schooler from getting bored, making it a weatherproof indoor outing.

Army stew family lunch near Gangnam Univ. Station: Uncle Johnson

Uncle Johnson Budae-jjigae Yongin Main Branch is a budae-jjigae (army stew) restaurant on the 2nd floor of KC College Point near Gangnam University Station in Giheung-gu, Yongin. On a family lunch with her husband and son, the writer ordered original budae-jjigae for 2 with ramen noodles added, plus french fries for her son, and found the broth tasty, with rice cake slices and potato adding plenty of variety. With underground parking and roomy tables, Uncle Johnson Budae-jjigae made a satisfying lunch spot for families with kids.

Gwanggyo cake café: lemon tea for a cold & peach slice, Café Diaz

Café Diaz Galleria Gwanggyo (카페디아즈 갤러리아 광교점) is a takeout café on basement level 1 of Galleria Gwanggyo in Suwon, known for reserved whole cakes and slice cakes. Nursing a cold, the writer chose a lemon tea, her husband picked a milk tea, and the couple took a peach cream slice cake home, where the fresh, crunchy peaches stood out. Café Diaz is a good Gwanggyo cake shop for booking an anniversary whole cake in advance.

Gwanggyo Japanese restaurant family dinner, curry refill: Gyuen-dang

Gyuen-dang Avenue France Gwanggyo Branch is a Japanese restaurant on basement level 1 of Avenue France near Gwanggyo Jungang Station in Suwon, where diners grill gyukatsu (breaded beef cutlet) themselves on a mini burner at the table. Around sunset, the writer, her husband and their elementary-school son ordered sirloin gyukatsu, a tsukune bowl (chicken meatball rice bowl) and potato curry with one refill, and the son raved about the sirloin gyukatsu grilled in butter. Gyuen-dang Avenue France Gwanggyo Branch is an easy place to choose a menu for a family dinner with kids.

Gangnam Station fusion Korean lunch course with parents: Jusindang

Jusindang Gangnam is a twelve-zodiac-themed dining bar in a basement near Gangnam Station Exit 11 in Seoul. It runs as a cocktail bar at night and serves fusion Korean lunch courses by day. The writer took their parents to the Cheongsil private room for Lunch Course B at 23,000 won per person, and the parents were intrigued by and enjoyed the monkfish aioli, beef brisket cheongyang chili sujebi (hand-torn dough soup) and jocheong (grain syrup) rice gelato. For a good-value, unusual lunch course near Gangnam Station, Jusindang Gangnam's lunch menu is a strong fit.

Dongbaek, Yongin dumpling hot pot a picky kid loved: Baekcheongu

Baekcheongu Kalguksu Yongin Dongbaek Branch is a seafood kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) and seafood mandu (dumpling) hot pot restaurant on Pyeongchon2-ro 1beon-gil in Giheung-gu, Yongin, Gyeonggi. A family of three visited Baekcheongu Kalguksu at 7:30pm on a weekday, ordered the seafood & mandu hot pot and Yeongwol seoritae (black soybean) kongguksu, set aside a portion for their son, who can't eat spicy food, and only then added the kimchi mandu to the pot. With rich seafood broth, chewy noodles and well-filled dumplings, it was a meal even a very picky eater enjoyed.

Suwon hair salon gray root touch-up and subtle layered cut: Uaroom

Uaroom is a hair salon on the 2nd floor of a building near Exit 3 of Maetan-Gwonseon Station in Maetan-dong, Yeongtong-gu, Suwon. After a summer that left long straight hair damaged and gray roots grown out, the writer got a root touch-up at Uaroom in a middle tone between the current color and the color growing in to cover the gray, plus a layered cut with just enough layers to stay easy to style. The writer had wanted bold layers, but followed the Uaroom designer's advice to keep them moderate and was delighted with the result.

Yongin Japanese restaurant with 5-sauce mozzarella katsu: Myeonsikdang

Myeonsikdang Suji Government Office branch is a Japanese restaurant serving ramen, katsu and rice bowls near Sujigucheong Station in Yongin, Gyeonggi. A family of three (the writer, her husband and their son) ordered spicy tonkotsu ramen, mozzarella cheese katsu and curry noodles at the kiosk for just over 30,000 won, and ate the mozzarella cheese katsu five ways: with fresh wasabi, salt, seasoning powder, spicy sauce and tonkatsu sauce. With solo counter seats as well as family tables, Myeonsikdang Suji Government Office branch is a good-value Japanese restaurant for eating alone or a family lunch.

Jokbal restaurant near Sanghyeon Station with round tables: Cheongdam

Cheongdam Jokbal Gwanggyo Sanghyeon Branch is a jokbal (braised pig's trotters) restaurant in Sanghyeon-dong, Gwanggyo, Yongin, near Exit 2 of Sanghyeon Station, with outdoor patio tables out front. At a round table inside, the medium jokbal came with complimentary bibim makguksu (spicy buckwheat noodles) and bean sprout soup, and the bean sprout soup was good enough for a refill. Cheongdam Jokbal Gwanggyo Sanghyeon Branch is a great pick for jokbal and makgeolli on the patio on a cool evening.

Kid-friendly beef omakase in Suwon Ingye-dong: a birthday at Woowine

Woowine is a beef omakase restaurant on the first floor of Jeonggeon Building in Ingye-dong, Suwon. A family of three came for their third-grader's birthday and worked through galbitang (beef short rib soup), banchan side dishes, a tray course of hwajeon (flower rice cakes), fried scallops and yukhoe cones, charcoal-grilled sirloin, daepagetti (green onion pasta), bibim guksu and plum sherbet, while Woowine printed the photos sent in advance and kept the cake until dessert time. For a family celebration with a child, Woowine was easy-going and worth the price.

Yangji, Yongin Italian restaurant with 30cm pizza and cream calzone

Ttukbaegi-e Dameun Italia (뚝배기에 담은 이탈리아) is a wood-fired pizza and ttukbaegi (earthenware pot) pasta restaurant on Nampyeong-ro in Yangji-eup, Yongin, Gyeonggi. The cream calzone and bulgogi salad pizza arrived on plates about 30cm across, so the leftover pizza went home in a takeout box, and the self-serve bar had a coffee machine for after the meal. With a large free parking lot, a 12-person group room and baby chairs, Ttukbaegi-e Dameun Italia suits family and group gatherings.
