Yongin Chinese spot, fermented-noodle family dinner: Doseogwan Dwitjip

Doseogwan Dwitjip (도서관뒷집) is a book-filled Chinese restaurant right behind a library on Guseong 2-ro in Giheung-gu, Yongin, Gyeonggi. On an early weekend evening the writer shared jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles), jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) and tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) with family, and, likely thanks to the house-made fermented noodles, felt comfortable at home afterward despite all that flour. With roomy tables and attentive service, Doseogwan Dwitjip is a Giheung Chinese restaurant worth returning to for a family meal out.

Haenggung-dong rooftop café in Suwon for coffee with Mom: Jeongjiyoung

Jeongjiyoung Coffee Roasters Hwahongmun Branch is a three-story rooftop café right in front of Hwahongmun Gate in Haenggung-dong, Suwon. The writer visited with Mom just after opening on a weekday, sat by a first-floor window overlooking Hwahongmun with a vanilla latte and an americano, and saw 4 to 5 rooftop tables already taken even at that hour. Jeongjiyoung Coffee Roasters Hwahongmun Branch works with Mom, friends or a partner, but a summer night is the visit it recommends most.

Ox blood soup with Mom at 11 a.m. in Ingye-dong, Suwon

Eolkeunhan Ppyeo Haejangguk Suwon Ingye Branch is a haejangguk (Korean hangover soup) restaurant in the Drama City building in Ingye-dong, Suwon, with roomy four-person tables suited to solo dining and spice levels from mild to extra-fiery. Around 11 a.m., the blogger and Mom had seonji haejangguk (ox blood soup) at regular spice and ugeoji (dried cabbage leaf) pork bone soup at mild, ₩11,000 each; the ox blood was bouncy, and the bone soup had no gamey smell and moist meat. The soup-loving blogger's verdict: today's soup pick at Eolkeunhan Ppyeo Haejangguk was a success.

Suwon katsu spot, Friday 4pm new sea snail noodle set: Gyewondang

Gyewondang Ingye Branch (계원당 인계점) is a retro Western-style pork and chicken cutlet restaurant on a side street in Ingye-dong, Suwon. On a Friday at 4 pm, the writer had the Gyewon Fried Chicken Steak made from a whole chicken thigh and the new spicy-sour golbaengmyeon (sea snail noodles) set for 13,000 won; the cutlet stayed crisp to the last bite, the tangy noodles paired well with it, and self-serve drinks, self-packing for leftovers and free hair ties were thoughtful touches. Gyewondang Ingye Branch suits a quiet weekday-afternoon date or a lunch with coworkers.

Suwon burger restaurant, Yeongtong: monthly nacho Mac & Cheese, 666

666 Burger Main Branch is a handmade burger restaurant on Maeyeong-ro in Maetan-dong, Yeongtong-gu, Suwon, open until midnight with bar-table seats for solo diners. The writer, who had only ever ordered 666 Burger for delivery, visited alone on a weekday afternoon for the Mac & Cheese Burger (13,900 won), the burger of the month on a menu that changes monthly, with plump seasoned potato wedges, and found that crunchy nacho chips plus the tang of sriracha and pickles kept it from getting heavy to the last bite. For cheese-loaded burgers, solo meals or a late-night snack in Suwon, 666 Burger Main Branch is a good fit.

Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Dongtan Namgwangjang Branch is a Chinese restaurant specializing in cockle jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) at Dongtan Namgwangjang in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. The cold jjamppong comes in a slushy, half-frozen broth topped with a whole live octopus, with heat about on par with Jin Ramen and a clean finish. Bultina's cold jjamppong suits anyone after a cool, hangover-soothing bowl in Dongtan on a hot day.
