Just-opened Korean restaurant in Gyeongju: kale ssambap lunch at Goyu

Today I want to share the meal that stuck with me the most from a recent trip to Gyeongju with a friend. Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju has so many pretty cafés and great restaurants that it's always hard to pick where to go — this time we went to Goyu, a newly opened Korean restaurant that blends Gyeongju's quiet, old-town atmosphere with modern cleanliness. It's a piping-hot new spot that's been open for less than three weeks, and I fell completely for the tidy table setting and the care put into every dish. Let's get into it!

What kind of place is Goyu? Modern Korean dining on Hwangnidan-gil

Goyu sits at 49 Sajeong-ro, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongbuk, in Hwangnidan-gil. '고유(古由)' means "originating from the old." Doesn't the name alone conjure the antique charm of a hanok and a distinctly Korean sensibility? True to its name, Goyu builds on the deep flavors of traditional Korean cuisine while adding a modern touch and real care.

The signature menu includes perilla oil buckwheat noodles, hanwoo yukhoe perilla oil bibim noodles, mackerel gondeure (dried wild greens) rice, whole pork belly kimchijjim, and hanwoo yukjeon (pan-fried beef) — perfect if you want a proper, tidy Korean meal while traveling in Gyeongju.

Inside Goyu: the space and the menu

Right from the doorway, the exterior — a mix of Gyeongju's quiet old-town feel and modern touches — caught my eye. It almost felt like visiting grandma's house!

Stepping inside, the not-too-fussy, tidy interior and warm lighting put me at ease :)

Maybe because it's such a new spot, the whole restaurant felt really clean and pleasant.

Flipping through the menu, there was a whole lineup of tempting dishes — from tidy Korean meal sets to side dishes perfect for sharing!

The hot-pot rice and bibim noodle options were tempting too, but this time my friend and I decided to go for a warm, filling spread.

Three dishes ordered for lunch at Goyu

For lunch, we ordered slow-braised pork napa kimchijjim (2 servings), plus cold pork with kale ssambap and doenjang (fermented soybean paste), and cheese potato pancake as sides!

1. Slow-braised pork napa kimchijjim (15,000 won per person, two servings minimum)

The moment it hit the table, the smell of the kimchijjim (kimchi stew) really got my appetite going. Made with domestic chilled pork shoulder, the meat was so tender and moist. The napa kimchi was braised so soft it pulled apart along the grain with just a nudge of the chopsticks — the combo with the pork needs no explanation, it was simply the best. If you like Korean food, this is a must-try! The kimchi's mild, well-balanced tang combined with the savory pork juices, and I ended up polishing off a bowl of rice in no time — total rice thief.

2. Cold pork with kale ssambap and thick doenjang

Cute little round rice balls wrapped in kale come with savory gang-doenjang (thick soybean paste) and mild, tender cold pork!

The crisp, fresh crunch of the kale, the deep, savory flavor of the doenjang, plus a clean slice of cold pork — pop it all in your mouth at once and it's a rich, healthy burst of flavor. Pretty to look at and just as tidy in taste, it was great for photos too.

3. Cheese potato pancake

No Korean table is complete without a jeon (savory pancake)! Goyu's cheese potato pancake is fried crisp on the outside with that satisfying crunch, and packed with savory cheese inside, giving it a salty, nutty flavor throughout. It balanced perfectly against the spice of the kimchijjim and the savoriness of the ssambap — a perfect side dish.
