Birdman near Sinsa Station: an after-dinner stop on Garosu-gil

After dinner on Garosu-gil I was wondering where to go next and wanted a bar with a good atmosphere, and that's how I ended up at Birdman. It's pretty well known among people looking for things to do around Sinsa Station, so I was curious, and after visiting I could see right away why it gets recommended as a date spot and as a bar for drinking alone near Sinsa. The hidden speakeasy feel starts right at the entrance.

Birdman's atmosphere: a basement speakeasy in a renovated boiler room

Wood interior of Birdman, renovated from a boiler room

The first thing I noticed when I opened the door was the atmosphere. I heard it was renovated from an old boiler room, and with the vintage walls, wood interior and soft lighting it honestly felt like a movie set. At the bar seats you can watch the bartender make cocktails right in front of you, and in the back there are tables that are nice for chatting.

The art covering the walls made the space even more special, and taking photos was fun too. The Birdman vibe is definitely alive and well here.

The menu was a little special too. Scan the QR code on the table to see the menu, pick what you want, and tell a staff member to complete your order. Since there are photos, you can see at a glance what each cocktail is, and ordering isn't hard even for first-timers.

Non-alcoholic Bloody Schpenner, 18,000 won

A glass of the non-alcoholic Bloody Schpenner cocktail

The first drink to arrive was the Bloody Schpenner. Even though it's a non-alcoholic cocktail, it looked really pretty. The special cream on top of the tomato juice was smoother than I expected and balances the tomato's acidity well. If you like tomato juice, you'll probably be very happy with it, and it's nice that people who can't drink can still enjoy the mood.

Grape Mix cocktail, 19,000 won

Next was the Grape Mix. It's a cocktail with vodka, white wine and lemon juice, fresh at the first sip and clean at the finish. A subtle grape aroma comes through and it isn't overly sweet, so it's the kind you keep reaching for. The color was much prettier in person than in the photos I'd seen.

New York New York, 19,000 won: the favorite of the night

New York New York, a bourbon whiskey-based cocktail

Personally, the one I liked most was the New York New York. It has bourbon whiskey, lemon juice and red wine, with a heavy aroma and acidity in good balance. If you like whiskey, it's easy to enjoy. I'd recommend it if you prefer a classic taste over sweet cocktails.

Melon & brown cheese bar snack, 16,000 won

For a snack I ordered the melon & brown cheese. Plenty of brown cheese (a caramel-like Norwegian cheese) is piled on sweet melon, and the unexpected combo really worked. The nutty, caramel-like flavor of the brown cheese meets the cool sweetness of the melon, so it's like a dessert but also does its job as drinking food. The portion was more generous than I expected, nice for two people to share lightly.

Can you drink alone at Birdman? Bar seats and service

The staff were friendly too. They explain the cocktails in detail, and if you tell them your taste they'll recommend similar styles. Quite a few guests came alone and it didn't feel awkward at all. So I think it's well worth recommending to anyone looking for a bar for drinking alone near Sinsa Station. If you sit at the bar you can even watch the cocktails being made, so I don't think you'd get bored on your own.

Tips for visiting Birdman on a weekend

There are so many bars on Garosu-gil, but it's rare to find one where the space itself feels like content. Music, lighting and even scent seem carefully considered, so it's good for a date and very satisfying for a special occasion. It tends to be crowded on weekends, so I recommend reserving or going a bit early.

Is Birdman worth it? Final verdict

It was satisfying both for a day when I just want a casual drink and for a day when I'm looking for an atmospheric date spot. If you're looking for things to do around Sinsa Station, it's just right as a finishing stop after a meal. I could enjoy a variety of cocktails and tasty snacks in an emotive space, and Birdman's unique atmosphere stayed in my memory for a long time. If you're looking for a bar with a good atmosphere on Garosu-gil, it's worth a visit at least once.

Birdman location, parking and how to find the entrance

Birdman is in the basement at 55-4 Garosu-gil, Gangnam-gu, Seoul. Dedicated parking is practically impossible, so I recommend using a nearby public or private parking lot.

It's about an 8–10 minute walk from Sinsa Station Exit 8. It's deep in an alley, so it was a little hard to find at first, but it felt like a hidden hideout, which made me even more excited. Go down through the entrance at the back of an old building. True to the speakeasy concept, the space deliberately plays up a secretive mood.
