Bakery café in Ulju, Ulsan with cinnamon rolls and a garden: MUG

In short

MUG (카페 먹) is a bakery café in Sangbuk-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan, with a gallery, garden, and forest views. I tried cinnamon rolls and injeolmi (soybean-coated rice cake) bread and explored the gallery and garden; the rolls were chewy outside and moist inside. The bread was memorable, but lemon cream cheese was the only cinnamon roll flavor left at lunchtime.

I visited MUG (카페 먹), a bakery café near Eonyang in Ulsan. I tried the cinnamon rolls and looked around the gallery and garden. The spacious seating and forest views through the floor-to-ceiling windows kept it from feeling cramped, even during a long stay.

Where is MUG, and is parking easy?

The address is 90 Hyangsandagae-ro, Sangbuk-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan, South Korea (울산 울주군 상북면 향산다개로 90). After leaving the city center and following a forest road for a while, I started wondering whether I was going the right way, but entering the address in my navigation app took me straight there. There was plenty of parking in front of the café, so parking was easy.

What is the story behind the blackened building?

I read in the café's description that a major wildfire had burned down 10 hectares of forest here several years earlier. It said the building's charred wood finish preserves the memory of the fire while expressing healing and renewal. Knowing that story made me take another look at the materials.

Just inside the entrance was a gallery with artworks displayed beneath an exposed concrete ceiling. A notice invited visitors to spend a moment with the paintings before having coffee. Outside, a route through the garden connected walking paths, a viewing platform, and an ecological pond.

On one side of the interior was a large screen stretching from ceiling to floor. During my visit, it showed sea turtles swimming, and the soft lighting made it feel a little like being at an aquarium. Photos could not quite capture the screen's size.

How do the cinnamon rolls taste, and when do they sell out?

The cinnamon rolls were plump and generously coated with ground cinnamon. They were chewy outside and moist inside, with a gentle cinnamon aroma that went well with coffee.

I was told the bread comes out when the café opens at 10 a.m., and popular items sometimes sell out early. I visited at lunchtime, when lemon cream cheese was the only cinnamon roll flavor left, so I could not choose another flavor. The tiramisu cinnamon roll was described as a limited menu item available only on weekends and public holidays.

There were various breads besides the cinnamon rolls. The injeolmi (soybean-coated rice cake) bread, evenly coated with soybean powder, was especially memorable.

What drinks are available, and how much do they cost?

The menu included coffee, matcha lattes, smoothies, and ades (fruit-flavored fizzy drinks). The signature MUG Black Latte combines a condensed milk base with cold brew. The prices below are reproduced as written in the original post, which did not specify the monetary unit.

  • Americano 5.5 / Café latte 6.0 / Vanilla latte 6.5
  • MUG Black Latte 7.5
  • 100% organic Hadong matcha latte 7.5

  • MUG lemon ade / Grapefruit ade / Omija (schisandra berry) ade: 7.0 each

What are the seating and amenities like?

The seats were widely spaced, with forest views through the floor-to-ceiling windows, so I felt comfortable spending time there. There are high chairs, separate men's and women's restrooms, Wi-Fi, and takeaway. Last orders were listed as 7:30 p.m., though the café says this may vary depending on conditions that day.

Being able to add a gallery visit and garden walk to bread and coffee made this feel like a nice stop for a date or an outing near Ulsan. I remember the cinnamon rolls for their chewy, moist texture, though it is worth keeping in mind that the selection was limited at lunchtime.

I received complimentary drinks and baked goods through MUG's sponsored review program for this post.
