Octopus seafood hotplate restaurant in Mukho: wasabi beef belly, Onda

In short

Onda Donghae Mukho Main Branch (온다 동해묵호본점) is an octopus and seafood hotplate restaurant on the second floor near the Kkamakbawi raw fish village in Mukho, Donghae, Gangwon. The writer went around 1 pm with her fiancé, took a big-window sea-view seat and shared the Donghae octopus seafood hotplate for two (₩58,000) with octopus, abalone, hard clams, shrimp and beef belly, then finished with a self-serve fried rice stirred with the seasoned lettuce side dish. Tender octopus and beef belly dipped in wasabi sauce made this a very satisfying sea-view lunch at Onda.

What is Onda Donghae Mukho Main Branch like?

Onda Donghae Mukho Main Branch is a seafood restaurant in Mukho, Donghae, serving octopus seafood hotplate (muneo haemul cheolpan). I wanted seafood for lunch in Mukho, so I headed to Onda! I ordered the hotplate with octopus, abalone, clams, shrimp and even beef belly in it! The restaurant is on the second floor, so you eat while looking at the sea, and the portion is generous enough for two. I'll show you what I ate and what the place feels like :)

The second floor with big windows and a sea view

The second floor is spacious and clean, and the big windows give you a full view of the sea!! We got there at 1 and were lucky to get a window seat, but a little later lots of guests came in...? At first there were plenty of seats, you know? But maybe because it was lunchtime, it got busy fast..

There are facilities that suit families, so lots of families come, and travelers and friend groups visit a lot too!

What I ordered: Donghae octopus seafood hotplate for two, ₩58,000

I ordered the Donghae octopus seafood hotplate for two, which costs ₩58,000. It comes with octopus, abalone, hard clams, beef belly and shrimp.

Seven side dishes

The seven side dishes were braised potatoes, white kimchi, kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi), bean sprouts, corn, seasoned pickled radish and seasoned lettuce. They weren't heavily seasoned and were on the mild side, so they went really well with the octopus seafood hotplate!

How to eat the octopus seafood hotplate, and how it tastes

The hotplate comes in a pot piled high like a mountain with seafood, vegetables and beef belly. See how full the pot is..? The octopus on top was big, too!

You start by boiling it on high heat, and the broth can boil over, so controlling the heat is a must! This was the order I ate in.

  • First, separate the white clam meat from the shells
  • Keep cooking the abalone with its shell facing up until you get to the fried rice
  • Cut the octopus and vegetables into bite-size pieces; I only cut the octopus and pine mushrooms, and left the bean sprouts, bok choy and enoki mushrooms uncut

The octopus and clams come already cooked once, so I boiled them a bit longer, and they weren't tough at all, just super tender!

Beef belly dipped in wasabi sauce

And for me, the rich, fatty beef belly was really good. Above all, the wasabi sauce was exactly my taste!! Dunking the meat deep in the sauce was so delicious that I wanted to add more beef belly. No wonder it's on the menu as an add-on.. (there were also 2 pieces of bunmoja tteok, rice cakes made with potato starch)

Self-serve fried rice for ₩3,000, with the lettuce side dish stirred in

The self-serve fried rice costs ₩3,000. I'm someone who has to have fried rice even when I'm full.. I picked out every last bit of the solids, scooped out a little of the sauce, and then stir-fried it together with the seasoned lettuce that came as a side dish!

My fiancé said he was full, so we ordered just 1, and the portion of fried rice was still generous.. If you like your fried rice fluffy and dry, I think it's better to put the rice in first and then add sauce!

Can you bring a baby? Baby bed and restrooms

I was surprised that there is even a baby bed inside the restaurant! It's not common for a restaurant to have one, and it felt so considerate toward families visiting with kids.. I think people traveling to Mukho with a baby can eat comfortably here, too!
