Mangwon Hangang Park picnic bakery, balsamic oil: Boulangerie Copain

In short

Boulangerie Copain is a takeout-only bakery in Mangwon, Mapo, Seoul, known for its baguettes and located on the way from Mangwon Market to Mangwon Hangang Park. Around 4pm on a weekday, the writer and her boyfriend bought a choco baguette, a basil sandwich, a fig financier, onion cream cheese and balsamic olive oil at Boulangerie Copain, had the baguette sliced, and took everything for a picnic at Mangwon Hangang Park. Boulangerie Copain is a great Mangwon bakery for picking up bread to go before a Han River picnic.

My boyfriend and I were out for a day in Mangwon when we stumbled on a bakery-crawl gem famous for its baguettes: Boulangerie Copain (블랑제리코팡)!

Where is Boulangerie Copain, and what are its hours?

Boulangerie Copain is a bakery on the way to Mangwon Hangang Park, just past Mangwon Market. It's open Mon–Sun 10:00–22:00, closes early if the bread sells out, and has no days off. It felt like the final stop on a Mangwon bakery crawl, you know?

Are baguettes still left at 4pm on a weekday?

I went around 4pm on a weekday and luckily there were still baguettes! Not a lot, maybe half to a third of the stock left. I heard this Mangwon bakery-crawl favorite was even featured on the TV show Master of Living (생활의 달인).

Inside Boulangerie Copain

Inside the takeout-only Boulangerie Copain

Turns out the owner is quite well known ^^ There's always a reason a place is famous for baguettes! The shop is run by a chef who came from the Shilla Hotel, and it supplies Market Kurly, Coupang and Baemin too, so it's a properly proven baguette spot!

Boulangerie Copain is takeout-only, so there are no tables inside. While I was browsing the breads, customers kept coming in to buy some. Mangwon locals were dropping by and taking bread home.

What time do baguettes go on sale at Boulangerie Copain?

To buy a baguette at this top Mangwon bakery, you need to go from 10am. Before that, you can buy the other breads, just not baguettes.

Boulangerie Copain also slices baguettes for you, and from 7pm there's a closing time sale. Ah, if I lived in Mangwon I'd be here every day 🥺 So jealous of Mangwon residents~ baguette on your doorstep!

What breads does Boulangerie Copain sell?

The first thing I saw when I walked in was the choco baguette. Choco baguettes with Valrhona chocolate are trending lately, so I grabbed one and put it on my tray, haha.

Only a few choco baguettes were left! I'd wanted to try one, and finding it at this Mangwon bakery-crawl and baguette spot? Really lucky!

Besides baguettes, Boulangerie Copain has plenty of other baked goods. Probably because it's such a popular bakery, the shelves were clearly emptier in the afternoon. Everyone must sweep them up fast 🥹

There was freshly baked sandwich bread, and the toasty smell filling the shop was so good~

Individually wrapped breads at Boulangerie Copain

Every bread at Boulangerie Copain is individually wrapped, which I liked because it feels hygienic. The croissants are famous too, but I had plans that day, so I mostly bought baguette items!

There's also a range of pastries that are hard to find elsewhere.

They said the croissants are supplied to cafés and other businesses, and I really want to try those crispy, flaky croissants too 🥹

There are lots of baguette sandwiches too, all hygienically wrapped. Love this. Individual wrapping makes me trust a place more..!

They also have baked sweets and dessert breads, which I'd recommend picking up for a trip to Mangwon Hangang Park!

What we bought for a Mangwon Hangang Park picnic

Just a choco baguette felt like not enough, so I also bought a basil baguette sandwich. We'd just eaten, haha. Is it really okay to eat this much?

Breads and sauces bought at Boulangerie Copain, packed up

Here's everything I bought on my bread tour of Boulangerie Copain. I said I'd only buy a little, but did I buy quite a lot..?

  • Choco baguette
  • Basil sandwich
  • Fig financier (small baked cake)
  • Onion cream cheese
  • Extra virgin balsamic olive oil

I asked the owner to slice the baguette, had everything neatly packed, and where did we take it?! Hehe, straight to Mangwon Hangang Park! If you're visiting the park or going on a picnic, I recommend picking up a baguette or baguette sandwich at Boulangerie Copain.

These days people also buy a baguette and ingredients to make sandwiches themselves by the Han River, but I don't have the confidence for that... haha. So I bought a baguette that was already made into a sandwich.

Will the balsamic olive oil leak on the way to the park?

Boulangerie Copain also had olive oil and balsamic sauce, so I bought them, and the owner packed them very carefully so they wouldn't burst 👍 Thanks to the owner's foresight, nothing leaked all the way to the park.

How does Boulangerie Copain's choco baguette taste?

The choco baguette I'd been looking forward to! I tried it and wow, it was moist and soft through and through! I never knew the rich Valrhona chocolate and a chewy-yet-soft baguette would go together this well. Why am I only finding out now?

Boulangerie Copain basil sandwich

The basil sandwich at Boulangerie Copain, what is there to say, basil lovers can't possibly dislike it! Rich basil pesto is spread evenly inside the chewy baguette, with cheese and ham, so it's a filling sandwich. If you like basil, I strongly recommend it 👏

Boulangerie Copain fig financier

Last was the fig financier I bought as dessert~ It has dried figs inside, so every bite had a nice fig chew. Chewy outside and soft inside.

Is Boulangerie Copain a good bakery for a Mangwon Hangang Park picnic?

On days like these when the weather's nice and the days are getting longer, I recommend buying a baguette or croissant at Boulangerie Copain, a top Mangwon bakery, for a picnic at Mangwon Hangang Park 👍 Being close to the park makes it even better! I'll stop by again next time I go to Mangwon Hangang Park or picnic by the Han River 😊
