In short
Bologna Daejeon Dunsan Branch is an Italian restaurant in Dunsan-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon, built around home cooking from Bologna, Italy. The blogger and a friend arrived right at the 11 AM opening and shared the gnocchi set (seasonal salad, truffle cream gnocchi and Bolognese ragu pasta), with complimentary ciabatta, basil mushroom soup and lemon water, a gelato for a receipt review, and a salt gift on the way out. Is there a wait at Bologna Daejeon Dunsan Branch if you arrive at 11 AM opening?
There's usually a wait here, so I did an opening run right at 11 AM, and guests kept coming in as soon as the doors opened. If a wait builds up, just register on the Catch Table kiosk in front of the restaurant!

For guests who are waiting, cold tea was set out at the entrance. Little touches like this make a great first impression 👍🏻

Inside Bologna Daejeon Dunsan Branch

The interior has a European feel. Dark wood tones and soft lighting made it feel like a restaurant down a European alley.

Bologna is themed on Bolognese home cooking from Italy, so the whole place feels European, and the staff were all kind, which made the atmosphere comfortable.

The mood is good enough for a blind date or a date, and it suits a special day with friends too. In fact, there were blind dates going on on both sides of us when we visited!
Bologna Daejeon Dunsan Branch menu
The menu is wide: set menus, pasta, risotto, pizza, gnocchi, salads and steak. It works for a light brunch-style meal, and it's also good for a course-style dinner on an anniversary or date.
There's a broad wine list too, so you can order to your taste 🍷
Free starters: ciabatta, basil mushroom soup and lemon water

Once you order, chewy authentic Italian ciabatta comes out with balsamic oil. Not many places serve a separate pre-meal course these days, so when it's served this carefully you really feel looked after.

The basil mushroom soup has a fragrant basil aroma with the nutty flavor of mushroom spreading softly, perfect for waking up your appetite.

The water comes as lemon water, which was refreshing to sip with the food 🍋
What comes in the Bologna gnocchi set?

We ordered the gnocchi set: 🥗 seasonal salad, 🍽️ truffle cream gnocchi and 🍝 Bolognese ragu pasta. The amount was just right for two, and it was nice to try a variety of dishes.

Seasonal salad
The gnocchi set includes a seasonal salad. Since our mains were cream and ragu pasta, I was going to order a salad to eat between bites, and the gnocchi set already includes one, which is great value.

The vegetables were fresh and the dressing wasn't overpowering, so it was easy to eat. The bits of cheese and sweet mango mixed in really woke up my appetite 🥭
Bolognese ragu pasta
I was most looking forward to the Bolognese ragu pasta, since I heard it's one of Bologna's signature dishes. The ragu sauce is said to be made the traditional way, stirred by hand and simmered for 4 hours.

The tomato acidity and the deep flavor of long-simmered beef are layered together. It's not harsh, and the rich flavor lingers.

The sauce soaked well into the noodles too, so the savory depth builds as you eat. Eating it with the olive ciabatta that came alongside added an olive aroma and brought the flavor out even more.

Truffle cream gnocchi, the favorite of the day
The truffle cream gnocchi was my favorite that day! In Bologna reviews, most guests say you have to order it, it's that popular. The outside is golden and slightly crisp, and the inside is chewy, soft potato dough, so the texture is sooo appealing.
Add Bologna's special cream sauce and it's thick but not too heavy, with a subtle truffle aroma, a classy gnocchi.

The nuttiness of walnuts and the saltiness of bacon add more textures and flavors on one plate. I think the truffle cream gnocchi is a dish almost nobody would dislike!
Free gelato for a receipt review

Right now, if you write a receipt review, you get a chocolate or yogurt gelato on the house. The chocolate gelato was better than I expected, I thought it was from a gelato shop... haha. Super thick, deep chocolate flavor, perfect to finish the meal, so be sure to get it! 🍫
A thoughtful parting gift: salt from Bologna

On the way out after the meal, they gave us herb salt (written as "herb salt" in the original, with a typo) in a small bottle as a gift. They said to use it when grilling meat at home, and that thoughtfulness really touched me!
