Seoreojeong Munji Branch is a steak, pasta and curry restaurant in Munji-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon. Two people shared the STEAK COMBO A SET (48,500 won) of sirloin steak, curry pork cutlet, mini udon, fries and an ade, and the wood-toned room with well-spaced tables made it an easy date meal. For a first visit as a pair, the Seoreojeong Munji Branch combo set is a good-value way to try a bit of everything.
Downtown Burger Galleria Timeworld is a handmade burger shop in Gourmet 494, the B2 food hall of Galleria Timeworld department store in Dunsan-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon. Near Government Complex Station, the writer had a Downtown burger and fries set for lunch and found a good balance of juicy patty, soft bun and crisp vegetables. Downtown Burger is a good pick for a filling handmade burger without leaving your department store shopping route in Dunsan-dong.
Plate is a fresh pasta and steak Italian restaurant in Seonhwa-dong, Jung-gu, Daejeon, where diners pick their own noodle from 6 fresh and 6 dried pastas. On a date for two, the blogger had a white vongole pasta set on No. 1 spaghetti (₩14,900) and a spicy chicken leg rosé pasta on No. 4 tagliatelle (₩15,900), ₩30,800 in total. Plate is a fun Seonhwa-dong date spot for comparing a mild pasta and a spicy one, right down to the noodle.
Chongil Nakji, Tanbang branch is a spicy nakji bokkeum (stir-fried small octopus) restaurant in Tanbang-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon, near Lotte Department Store. Two people shared the Chongil Mixed Special, sized for three at 52,000 won, mixing the whole octopus, small octopus, scallops and beef into rice and alternating bites with ssam (leaf-wrap) greens and cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew) for a generous meal. For a spicy octopus stir-fry that is also filling, the Chongil Mixed Special at Chongil Nakji, Tanbang branch is a solid choice.
Sanjang Samgyeop Daejeon Bongmyeong is a minari pork belly restaurant in the Bongmyeong-dong eatery alley in Yuseong, Daejeon. Staff grill the 37,000 won minari pork belly set (300g domestic fresh pork belly, Hanu beef daechang jjageuli stew, minari and whole king oyster mushrooms) on a stone plate, and two people paid 49,900 won after adding pork skin and self-serve fried rice. Sanjang Samgyeop is a good-value pick when you want minari pork belly without doing the grilling yourself.
Fuego Negro is a pizza and pasta restaurant in Jayang-dong, Dong-gu, Daejeon, in the university area between Daedong Station and Woosong University. Two people shared a bulgogi pizza, a bulgogi pilaf and a seafood hangover pasta for 36,000 won in total, and the spicy broth of the seafood pasta cut through the richness of the pizza and pilaf. Fuego Negro is a good pick near Daedong Station and Woosong University when you want to share several Western dishes at an easygoing price.
Yongja 1 Gwanpyeong Branch is a kalguksu (knife-cut noodle) restaurant in Gwanpyeong-dong, Yuseong, Daejeon, behind Lotte Mart and near Hyundai Premium Outlet Daejeon. On a hot day, two of us had lunch there and ordered soybean kalguksu (10,000 won), bibim kalguksu (10,000 won) and steamed dumplings (9,000 won); the rich soybean broth, the well-balanced bibim sauce and the thin-skinned kimchi-pork dumplings were all satisfying. The verdict: Yongja 1 is a kalguksu shop that does dumplings well too.
Buggy's Gwanpyeong (버기즈 관평점) is a handmade burger joint in the Technovalley area of Gwanpyeong-dong, Yuseong, Daejeon. During the 10th American Burger Week, the Godfather set cost ₩11,400 and the Double Classic Pepper set ₩13,200. The Godfather is a balanced burger with bacon and vegetables, while the Double Classic Pepper leans on the rich, beefy flavour of two patties. With consistently good patties, Buggy's Gwanpyeong is a solid choice for a handmade burger in Gwanpyeong-dong.
Jeonju House is a Korean restaurant in Bongmyeong-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, near Yuseong Spa Station, serving pork belly, kimchi stew and other Korean dishes. The writer ordered two servings of aged kimchi galbi stew made with Korean-grown kimchi (15,000 won per person) and a large egg roll (10,000 won). The spicy yet clean broth, generous Korean pork rib meat and mild egg roll emptied a bowl of rice in no time. Jeonju House's aged kimchi galbi stew and large egg roll make a safe, satisfying meal in Bongmyeong-dong.
Baengnyeon Boribap (백년보리밥) is a Korean barley rice restaurant on Sintanjin-ro in Daedeok, Daejeon. The writer had the aged-kimchi cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew) barley rice set with mackerel for 14,500 won and the black soybean noodle soup barley rice set with spicy pork for 15,500 won, both served with 12 side dishes, and ate quietly thanks to the wide hall and well-spaced tables. Baengnyeon Boribap is a back-to-basics Korean restaurant worth recommending for a family meal with parents.
Jeonbotdae Sutbul Ogyeop (전봇대 숯불 오겹) is a charcoal-grilled pork BBQ restaurant in Yongun-dong, Dong-gu, Daejeon, serving premium grade-1 sow pork that is wet-aged before grilling. On a weekday evening, two diners ordered the pork platter (49,900 won) and kimchi stew (6,000 won) to compare five cuts: pork belly, neck, jowl, skirt meat and front leg. The pork jowl was the standout, and with steamed egg and mini jjageuli included, Jeonbotdae Sutbul Ogyeop's platter was generous in both portion and variety for two.
Songrimbok Jangeo Unlimited Eel Daejeon Direct Store is a large all-you-can-eat restaurant in Jijok-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, where you grill freshwater eel, whole pork belly, duck and chicken neck at your table. The writer ate for two on the adult unlimited plan (29,900 won per person) and liked the spacious dining room, generous gaps between tables and consistent ingredients on every refill, with the duck as the favorite meat. For a family meal or a group work dinner, Songrimbok Jangeo's Daejeon Direct Store is well worth considering.
