Yeonnam-dong bakery at weekday opening: 4 cheese breads, Mandong Jegwa
In short
Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch is the Yeonnam-dong, Seoul branch of Gangneung's Mandong Jegwa, a takeaway and pickup-only bakery with no seating. A longtime Gangneung regular arrived at weekday opening, tried samples and bought 4 mostly cheese breads: emmental (5,200 won), bacon ciabatta (4,900 won), squid ink bread (4,100 won) and the signature garlic baguette (7,000 won). Because Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch sells the garlic baguette without a trip to Gangneung, the bakery is worth the journey to Yeonnam-dong even from far away.

Can you find Gangneung's Mandong Jegwa in Yeonnam-dong?
Yes! The Gangneung bakery Mandong Jegwa (만동제과) has a branch in Yeonnam-dong, Seoul: Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch. I have a bakery in Gangneung that I truly love, and I made a point of visiting every single time I went there!! And apparently there was a branch in Yeonnam all along..! No way,, this is the Yeonnam-dong bakery you can enjoy without going all the way to Gangneung.

How do you get to Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch, and what about seats and parking?
It takes about 10 minutes on foot from Hongik Univ. Station toward Yeonnam, and there is nowhere to sit and eat, only bread purchase and pickup. It's an easy walk, but it was so hot that I took a bus, and it dropped me right in front. Sadly, there are no seats where you can sit and eat.

You can't park at the shop :( If you come by car, you'll need to use a nearby paid parking lot and walk over :( But parking is a hassle, and there's still a reason you have to come.

When should you go to avoid the wait at Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch?
The shop is small, so when there's a wait only 3–6 groups can go in at a time, and on weekends you should assume you'll almost certainly wait. I hear the breads are nearly sold out by evening, so I recommend going as early as you can!! I went right at weekday opening and could buy without any stress. Even so, people kept coming in.

What breads does Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch have?
The selection is huge, from basic breads like ciabatta and chestnut loaf ☞☞☞

to things like tortilla breads that work as a meal replacement. And what makes Mandong Jegwa a real find is that whatever you eat is good.. I've visited many, many times, it's a bakery I adore T_T...♥

When I visited in Gangneung there weren't this many kinds of bread, but the Yeonnam branch had a huge variety. The prices are also good for the size, so it's great value!

What does Mandong Jegwa's signature garlic baguette taste like?
The signature item, the bread nobody leaves without, is the garlic baguette, and it's ₩7,000!! After eating it in Gangneung, I went back 3 times in a 2-night, 3-day trip.. It's the number one garlic bread and garlic baguette I've ever had. No place is as good as Mandong Jegwa.. I'm really serious..!!! It's packed with cream, so the garlic baguette is moist and soft.

Breads handed over at the counter
At Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch, the garlic baguette, onion bagel (어니언베이글), cucumber baguette and basil tomato are handed to you at the counter. Don't pick them from the display; just say so when you pay and they'll bring them out.

Why I chose emmental after the samples at Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch
As soon as you walk in, the staff offer samples of various breads, and I bought the emmental right after tasting it. I bought the emmental right at the front, you know?! The moment I walked in, the staff gave me tons of sample bread, haha not just one kind but several. Then I tried the emmental last and it was so good!!! So I asked what it was and brought it straight to the counter.
I love that Mandong Jegwa offers samples of so many breads!! Honestly, all their breads are good, so it's less about agonizing over flavor and more about finding the one that suits your taste, and the samples let me try all the good ones, haha.

The corn mayo bread is fluffy and thick, so even one is totally enough as a meal!!

- Garlic baguette ₩7,000

Is Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch worth traveling for?
Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch is a Yeonnam-dong bakery and a Hongdae favorite, but honestly it wouldn't be strange at all to come to Yeonnam-dong from far away just for this bakery. It's in my top 5 bakeries in the whole country T_T I truly adore it, and even though it's already well known, it's the kind of spot I want to hide and keep to myself. Once you try it you'll definitely go back, so please visit Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch..!!
