One thing I always~~ buy when I go to Jeju: Jeju omegi-tteok (mugwort rice cakes)!
My kid and my parents all love it, so it's one of those things I never skip whenever I visit Jeju~ This time I went looking for a rice cake shop that locals actually visit~
Parking at Suragan Tteokbang: spaces right in front
Suragan Tteokbang is a rice cake shop at 41 Noyeon-ro, Jeju-si, Jeju, and there's a parking space right in front of the store. For travelers, parking is one of the first things you check before heading to a good restaurant~

With parking right out front like this, ordering ahead and picking up is really smooth~
Open every day of the year, with warm rice cakes each morning
Suragan Tteokbang is a Jeju rice cake shop that's open every single day with no closed days, turning out warm rice cakes daily.

Like I felt at the black pork restaurant I posted about earlier, the places locals go tend to be the real deal more often than the tourist spots~

It's already famous enough among Jeju locals that plenty of people had called in orders early in the day! If there's a specific rice cake you want, call ahead and reserve~

I'd reserved too, and when I went to pick it up, everything was ready to grab and go — so convenient:)
Picking up omegi-tteok and browsing the rest of the counter
Suragan Tteokbang's store has all kinds of custom rice cakes beyond omegi-tteok. You know how it is — when you travel somewhere new, you get curious about whatever the locals eat a lot of~

While I was there, a repeat customer showed up who'd ordered custom rice cakes from Suragan Tteokbang before and had come back for more~ So I took a peek at what was there~

So many delicious-looking rice cakes!

There were so many kinds I love, I wanted to try them all~

And then — how did they know exactly what I was thinking — they handed me a soft, warm rice cake to taste~
I tore into it right there in the car, and yep, this place lives up to its reputation! Just the right softness and chewiness, and packed with pumpkin flavor~
Omegi-tteok with no artificial color, preservatives or synthetic additives
Suragan Tteokbang's omegi-tteok is made without preservatives, emulsifiers, or synthetic dyes, they said. The shop has been running since 2005, started by a mother and now carried on by her children.

They said they carry on the mother's craftsmanship — her insistence on selling only honest rice cakes — by making everything without additives~

This is the box of 20 pieces mixing various flavors.

Make sure to read the storage instructions inside~ Microwave thawing is possible!

Since I got home late and figured I couldn't eat them right away, I followed the instructions, took them out of the box, put them in zipper bags, and froze them~
How long do you microwave frozen omegi-tteok?
For Suragan Tteokbang's omegi-tteok, tear a small opening at the end of the bag and microwave for 20–30 seconds. I did 2 pieces, so I ran it for about 40 seconds~

My picks are the red bean omegi-tteok and the nut omegi-tteok! They said it's made with Jeju sea-breeze mugwort~ It's covered generously in peanuts, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seeds.

The whole red beans stuck all over it are completely my thing... There's also black sesame rice cake, and they said they grind and roast the black sesame themselves at Suragan Tteokbang~
- ✔ Wait, why would you thaw rice cake in the microwave?
- ✔ Is it okay to microwave rice cake?
- Yes~ it's totally fine! Since there are no preservatives in these rice cakes, microwave thawing is actually recommended.
- Tear a small opening at the end of the bag and thaw for 20–30 seconds — it tastes great. (Recommended time may vary depending on your microwave.)
