In short

Daidokoro Gwangalli Main Branch is a Japanese home-cooking restaurant on the second floor of a side-street building in Namcheon-dong, Suyeong-gu, Busan. The writer ordered the Dado Special 3-person set (52,900 won), which bundles karaage, nanban and curry sets with menbosha (shrimp toast) and drinks. The chicken nanban was the standout, and perks for office workers, students, baby guests and soldiers also caught the writer's eye. For hearty Japanese home cooking with thoughtful service in Gwangalli or Namcheon-dong, Daidokoro is a good choice.

Gwangalli restaurant for a proper meal

I was looking for a place near Gwangalli where I could really enjoy Japanese home cooking, and that's how I ended up at Daidokoro (다이도코로) Gwangalli branch.

Daidokoro Gwangalli Main Branch on a Namcheon-dong side street

Daidokoro is a cute little Japanese home-cooking restaurant tucked into a Namcheon-dong side street, and I was happy with everything from the atmosphere to the food to the service.

Where is Daidokoro Gwangalli, and where do you park?

The address is 27 Namcheondong-ro 108beon-gil, 2nd floor, Suyeong-gu, Busan. There's no parking lot, so I parked at Suyeong-gu Office and walked over.

It's also close to the Namcheon-dong café street, so it's a nice place for a stroll after the meal.

A cozy interior full of Japanese charm

Head up to the second floor and a warm atmosphere greets you, like a restaurant in a small Japanese town. I was impressed by how much care went into every little prop. There are manga books to read while you wait, so even solo diners or waiting time won't be boring.

The table is neatly set with a pudding spoon, shichimi (Japanese chili spice blend), furikake (rice seasoning) and salad dressing. It felt very considerate toward guests.

Another fun thing was the guestbook. You can browse the drawings and notes that guests leave after eating, and everyone is seriously good at drawing. I couldn't help thinking, "Do only adorable people come here?" It's full of cute, characterful pictures, and it's a lot of fun to flip through before or after your meal.

On top of that, milk pudding comes as dessert. Just from the lineup, it's a pretty generous spread.

How were the karaage, nanban set and curry?

Karaage

Daidokoro's karaage keeps all the charm of Japanese fried chicken: crispy outside, juicy inside. The seasoning is just right, so it goes well with rice, and kids can eat it without any trouble.

Daidokoro karaage and nanban set dishes

Nanban set (chicken nanban)

The nanban set is chicken nanban style, a specialty of Miyazaki in southern Japan. A sweet-and-sour house soy sauce and rich tartar sauce work together and keep the fried chicken from feeling heavy. Personally, it was the most memorable dish I ate that day.

Curry and menbosha

The curry has the deep, mellow flavor of slow-simmered Japanese curry. It isn't harsh; a gentle sweetness and savoriness come through, so anyone can enjoy it. Eat it with rice and a bowl is empty before you know it.

The menbosha was also a satisfying side, with its crispy texture and plump shrimp.

The milk pudding served at the end is sweet and smooth, a pleasant way to finish the meal.

Generous events and services at Daidokoro Gwangalli

Beyond the food, Daidokoro stands out for its range of perks for office workers, students, baby guests and soldiers.
