Daechi-dong eel rice bowl, a gentle first meal after endoscopy: Manmok
In short
Manmok is an eel rice bowl restaurant on Seolleung-ro 82-gil in Daechi-dong, Gangnam, Seoul, near Seolleung Station. After the husband's same-day gastroscopy and colonoscopy, the couple each had a whole-eel rice bowl at Manmok as his first post-checkup meal; the sauce was mild enough for a sensitive stomach, and the bowls came neatly served with matsutake mushroom soup, chawanmushi (steamed egg custard) and matcha and black tea ice cream. Manmok is an easy, restorative Daechi-dong lunch for a day when a health checkup has worn you out.

A Daechi-dong lunch spot for recovering your strength: the tidy eel bowls at Manmok
Why Manmok's eel rice bowl in Daechi-dong for the first meal after endoscopy
On the day my husband had a gastroscopy and a colonoscopy in one go, we went to Manmok, an eel specialist in Daechi-dong, for his first meal afterward. I was looking for something that wouldn't be harsh but would still bring protein and nutrition, and this is where I landed.
With the temperature swings and big gaps between day and night lately, it's a season when energy drops easily. On days like this, nothing matters more than looking after the health of the people you love most. My husband finally got the checkup that had been on our to-do list forever. Between the bowel-cleansing medicine the evening before, which kept him from sleeping properly, and the waiting around on the day itself, he came out looking completely drained, like his soul had been wrung out. :( I felt so sorry for him that I was fired up with a sense of mission to feed him something properly nourishing today.

Since it was his first meal after the exam, I searched for a protein dish that was gentle yet deeply nourishing, and ended up heading to a place praised for its neat, well-composed meals between Daechi-dong's cram-school streets and office district. It's a well-known Daechi-dong lunch hotspot: the authentic eel specialist Manmok!

What is Manmok's interior like, and is it clean?
The interior is quiet and calm, like stepping into a restaurant in Japan.

Restaurants that grill food usually have that fishy smell or oiliness hanging in the air, but even by my standards as a designer, every corner of Manmok was neatly kept and the air was very clear.

You can feel the owner's stubborn dedication to cleanliness and ventilation, which was very reassuring on the hygiene front. My husband, who came in exhausted, also relaxed thanks to the cozy lighting.
Is Manmok's whole-eel rice bowl gentle on a stomach after endoscopy?
We ordered one whole-eel bowl each, and they came neatly arranged on individual trays. Contrary to my worry, the sauce wasn't harsh or salty, so my husband, whose stomach was sensitive after the endoscopy, ate comfortably.
Manmok's menu, an eel specialist

The moment we sat down, we ordered a whole-eel bowl each for recovery, no deliberation needed. For my husband, who'd been through the exam on an empty stomach, I went all in on the one with a whole eel! When the neatly arranged single trays arrived, the sight was honestly breathtaking!

As soon as I lifted the lid, the deep aroma of the sweet-salty house tare sauce drifted up. As the star of a Daechi-dong lunch, a thick, plump freshwater eel covered the rice edge to edge. The eel, cut into bite-size pieces, glistened with shine.

It was crisp-grilled outside without being burnt and still moist inside, so even lifting a piece with chopsticks, you could feel the tenderness right in your fingertips.

I'd worried the sauce might be too harsh or salty for my husband's post-exam stomach, but it wasn't at all!
Matsutake soup, sesame salad and chawanmushi with the eel rice bowl
Matsutake mushroom soup, a vegetable salad with sesame dressing, and chawanmushi (savory steamed egg custard) too! I felt completely looked after~~ I thought it would be good for bringing an important guest as well.

It was mild, with the deep flavor of herbal and natural ingredients coming through, softly cutting the richness typical of eel. The seasoning had soaked evenly into every grain of rice, so it turned sweet as you chewed, and the pairing with the moist eel was wonderful. My husband smiled after the first bite, saying his stomach felt at ease and he seemed to be gaining energy, and I felt so proud for bringing him. haha

Changing the flavor with pickled ginger, pickled radish, sansho and wasabi
The eel bowl also came with pickled ginger, ssambu (pickled radish wraps), sansho pepper and wasabi. Putting them on the eel one at a time gave a new taste each time.

They were perfect for cutting the richness, so I managed to finish a whole eel.

How are Manmok's matcha and black tea ice creams?
After the eel bowl, Manmok serves handmade matcha ice cream and black tea ice cream for dessert. They cleaned up the mouth after the meal and made a perfect finish.
After happily finishing the tidy, generous eel meal, the other signature here arrived: handmade dessert. It was matcha ice cream with a bittersweet charm and black tea ice cream with a subtle, lovely fragrance.

The matcha ice cream had a rich, deep green tea flavor blending with smooth cream and finished clean without artificial sweetness, while the black tea ice cream had an elegant, fragrant aroma, as if brewed from fine Ceylon tea, lingering softly in the mouth. Being treated this graciously down to the last dessert made me feel like a truly valued guest, and my satisfaction doubled haha. My tired husband said one cool, clean bite of ice cream made his eyes pop open, and he was very pleased. haha
Is Manmok a good Daechi-dong lunch after a health checkup?
On a day when body and mind are especially tired, like after a family member's checkup, I'd strongly recommend Manmok as a Daechi-dong lunch if you want to restore your energy with a refined meal. Thanks to the tidy, filling food, my husband could rest well, much lighter in the afternoon. Take someone dear to you for a warm, healthy lunch. It'll be a restorative meal that blows away the heat and fatigue in one go!
