Where Gujeon Gukbap Yongbong Main Branch is, and how long the 1pm wait was
Today we went to Gujeon Gukbap, famous as a Yongbong-dong go-to! It was so nice to know there's a gukbap place near Chonnam National University and the Yongbong district where you can get a hearty meal 24 hours a day. It's right on the road so it was easy to find. When we arrived around 1pm there was already quite a wait. We waited too before getting in.

There's a Tableing waitlist kiosk out front. You just wait for your turn. Since it's a gukbap place, tables turn over fast, which was great — we didn't wait long before getting seated.

Seating at Gujeon Gukbap: tables for two, solo seats and high chairs
There were really a lot of people — the place was full. Seating is mostly 2-person and 4-person tables, with more 2-person ones, which is probably why families were waiting a bit longer. We came with our baby too, waited, and got seated at a 4-person table. There are also solo-dining tables — since so many people eat alone these days, this looked like a comfortable table for that, whether it's a Chonnam National University student or a Yongbong district office worker coming in alone for lunch or dinner.
Disposable aprons are provided too, which is convenient.
The restroom is through this door inside.
These are the sauces set on the table by default — salt, pepper, chojang (vinegar-chili sauce) and more. Ordering is done through a tablet, so it was easy to use.

The self-serve bar: seokbakji radish kimchi and green onion kimchi
There's a self-serve bar with fresh vegetables, kimchi, and sauces. The seokbakji (diced radish kimchi) and green onion kimchi here are genuinely delicious. Definitely try them — they pair perfectly with gukbap. I went back for seconds a few times!

Gujeon Gukbap's signature free sticky rice
After ordering, they set the table with basic kimchi like this. Gujeon Gukbap's signature is this chapssal (sticky rice). It's made fresh every day, carrying on the recipe and memory of a chapssal grandmother who was beloved in front of Namgwangju Market for 45 years, and it's given out for free. It's sticky rice with beans mixed in, and it was so good. Eating it wrapped in seaweed really woke up my appetite — great as an appetizer before the gukbap. Our baby seemed to like it too and ate well.

The free baby meal tray for children under 48 months
By the way, Gujeon Gukbap has a baby meal set. It's a free meal provided for children under 48 months, and it comes with quail eggs, sausage, seaweed, bone broth, and rice. Giving out nutritious bone broth for free — isn't this basically the most generous restaurant ever? These days there are a lot of no-kids-zones and it's not easy to take a baby out to eat, so we always check baby-related things first when looking for a place. Gujeon Gukbap has a meal set for babies and baby chairs on hand, so you can come here with peace of mind.

What we ordered at Gujeon Gukbap: sundae modum gukbap, zucchini gukbap and bomal kalguksu
We ordered sundae modum gukbap (mixed sundae soup), aehobak (zucchini) gukbap, and bomal kalguksu. I wanted bomal gukbap too, but they said they don't make it anymore — now they only have bomal kalguksu and bomal jujk. Since I actually prefer noodles, that worked out great for me.
Sundae modum gukbap (mixed blood sausage soup)
The sundae modum gukbap was packed full, right? It's loaded with ampbong sundae (blood sausage), intestines, and head meat. The broth is milky and rich too. There's plenty of chives in it so it wasn't heavy at all, which I liked. It was seasoned just right even without adding extra salt. The sundae was soft even though it was ampbong sundae. The intestines were chewy with no off smell — really delicious.

Aehobak gukbap (zucchini soup with rice)
There's probably no one in Gwangju who hasn't had aehobak (zucchini) gukbap — it's that famous a dish here. Gujeon's version was really clean and light. It was packed with zucchini and meat, with a nice spicy kick. The rice sits underneath, so eating it together with the toppings was really good. I'd call this a top spot for zucchini stew gukbap in Gwangju!

Bomal kalguksu: only 20 bowls a day
I can honestly say Gujeon Gukbap is a bomal kalguksu (top shell noodle soup) spot worth knowing about. Bomal is usually something you only get in Jeju, so finding bomal kalguksu in Gwangju felt surprising and exciting. I was curious about the taste and ordered it, and it was so good. The noodles were super chewy and the broth was rich. With bomal, seaweed, and bracken all mixed in, it tasted like a thick miyeokguk (seaweed soup) but with its own unique twist — really delicious. It was great being able to taste bomal kalguksu in Gwangju without having to fly to Jeju. Most of all, it just tasted good. They only sell 20 bowls a day, and after trying it, I completely understand why — you can tell how much care went into it!
With so much bomal packed in, it was fun spooning up the broth too. Above all, the broth was so rich. Mixing rice into the leftover broth after finishing the noodles is pure bliss. It also went perfectly with kimchi — one of those dishes I'd want to order again. Genuinely delicious! Recommended.

At the entrance, they'd thoughtfully set out everything from mouthwash to hair ties. How could anyone not love Gujeon Gukbap? Seriously, this place is the best...

Why Gujeon Gukbap works for a meal out with a baby
I totally get why Gujeon Gukbap Yongbong Main Branch is known as a Yongbong-dong go-to. You really have to try it to understand! With a wide range of gukbap options, everyone in the family can order what they want, which I loved first of all. And for parents with babies, it was memorable and reassuring that this is a restaurant you can comfortably bring your baby to. Now that I have a baby myself, finding baby-friendly restaurants is genuinely a task. I was so grateful that Gujeon Gukbap even offers a free meal set for children under 48 months — it really is a restaurant built around families. And on top of all that, the food was just really good. Every gukbap was delicious overall, and the bomal kalguksu was truly a standout. Try the gukbap, and don't miss the bomal kalguksu and bomal jujk while they last — only 20 bowls a day. I'd go back with a 20,000% chance of returning!
