Euljiro 1-ga instant tteokbokki, medium spice for two: Hyeonseoni-ne
In short
Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch (현선이네 청계즉석점) is an old-school instant tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) restaurant in Jung-gu, Seoul, a 1-minute walk from Exit 3 of Euljiro 1-ga Station. On a weekday evening, after a 10-minute wait, the writer ordered instant tteokbokki for two (₩22,000) and 4 fish cakes (₩4,000) and got a free Gosomayo rice ball (savory mayo rice ball) through a review event. At Hyeonseoni-ne the medium spice level wasn't spicy at all, but the generous portion was plenty for two.

Hello, this is Jjansun. Today I'm introducing a tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) place near Cheonggyecheon Stream, "Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch" (현선이네 청계즉석점).

I got a bit lost at first, but if you head further in, you'll see a big menu board and the "Hyeonseoni-ne Tteokbokki" sign.
Menu and how to order at the kiosk
At Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch, you pay in advance at the kiosk outside. Instant tteokbokki can be ordered for 2 people or more.

Most people seemed to go for the Hyeonseoni-ne tteokbokki combo set. I don't eat sundae (Korean blood sausage), so I ordered instant tteokbokki for 2 at the mild level.
Inside the restaurant and the self-serve bar
The inside feels a bit like a pojangmacha (street-tent bar) and has a warm, old-school vibe, which I liked.

The self-bar is right there when you walk in.

Small plates, pickled radish, paper cups, utensils, aprons and more are neatly set out.

The water dispenser is by the kitchen. Water is self-serve too.

There's also a menu inside, in case you want to check it.

How long is the weekday evening wait?
I visited on a weekday evening, and the place was packed, so I waited outside for about 10 minutes. It seemed like many office workers come after work. There aren't a lot of seats, but since tteokbokki is the kind of food where people who aren't drinking eat quickly and leave, turnover looked decent.

Review event and meal kits
Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch also runs a review event. You can get either a mayo rice ball (gochi-mayo jumeokbap) or "nostalgic tteok fritters", and I took part and got the mayo rice ball.

They apparently sell meal kits too. It seemed nice that you can easily enjoy the taste you had in the restaurant at home. Selling meal kits suggests a lot of people come here.
Review: medium-spice instant tteokbokki for two
Instant tteokbokki for 2 was ₩22,000 and 4 fish cakes were ₩4,000. The pot came packed with ingredients, and it arrived faster than I expected.

The tteokbokki for 2 includes rice cakes, fish cake, 4 yaki mandu (pan-fried dumplings), 2 boiled eggs, jjolmyeon (chewy wheat) noodles, cabbage and green onion.

Each seat has an induction cooktop, so you cook at the table. The staff told us we could eat as soon as it boiled once, so we waited for it to bubble up.

The rice cakes were chewy, which I loved. It was my first time having jjolmyeon noodles in tteokbokki, and they went well with the sweet sauce.

I ordered mild, and it wasn't spicy at all. They said it's less spicy than Shin Ramyun, but I think it would have been better with a bit more heat.

How was the Gosomayo (savory mayo) rice ball?
The mayo rice ball from the review event came out too. The rice had mayonnaise and seaweed flakes on it, but with no toppings like tuna or chicken, it tasted a little plain. So I mixed in a bit of the tteokbokki sauce, and it was much better.

The portion is plenty for two. I ate it all by myself, and it was so much food I thought my stomach would burst. 😆
One of the yaki mandu seemed to have soaked up a lot of oil, which was a bit disappointing, but the rest were tasty dunked in the tteokbokki sauce.

Final verdict on Hyeonseoni-ne
Overall, the instant tteokbokki at Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch was generous enough for two, and the homey atmosphere made it a comfortable meal. I saw many people having draft beer with their tteokbokki, and next time I'd like to try that too. It's a place I'd happily visit again when I'm craving instant tteokbokki.
If you're looking for a snack bar with a cozy, old-school pojangmacha feel near Cheonggyecheon or Euljiro 1-ga Station, I recommend giving it a visit.
