Jokbal restaurant seating 66 in Gwangju: Kkankkanhan Jokbal Yongbong

Hello~ it's Youngddo-yeong 😁 When you say jokbal in Jeolla-do, you say Kkankkanhan~! Today I visited Kkankkanhan, a jokbal spot in Yongbong-dong, Gwangju. I went on a weekday, late evening, and it was already full. They're open as normal this Chuseok too, so I'd seriously recommend it as a family gathering spot for the holidays~~!! There's really nothing better than jokbal for a holiday meal haha.

Where do you park at Kkankkanhan Jokbal Yongbong Branch?

Kkankkanhan Jokbal Yongbong Branch doesn't have its own parking lot, and street parking in front of the restaurant is only available from 7 PM. It's located near Chonnam National University, but parking around here is a nightmare, so I'd really recommend walking ㅠㅠㅠㅠ Otherwise, try parking in the alley near the children's park across from the restaurant and walking over.

Full by 8pm on a weekday: book ahead for groups

Even at 8pm on a weekday, it was packed. Right after we sat down, it filled up completely and people had to wait for seats! You can reserve in advance through Naver, so if you're planning a group gathering, I'd recommend booking ahead. Apparently it can seat up to 66 people.

Kkankkanhan Jokbal menu and review event

They have jokbal and bossam (boiled pork wraps) on the menu, plus set menus. New menu items include garlic jokbal and garlic bossam!

There are various sides too, and Kkankjok lets you add extra meat to a half-jokbal or half-bossam order.

Couple's Set (charcoal-grilled jokbal) ₩48,000

Standard sides: black sesame salad, eomuk tang and steamed egg

These sides come standard! Kkankjok's black sesame sauce salad and mumallaengi are so good~! You'll definitely want a salad refill haha.

And at the Yongbong branch, eomuk tang comes as the standard broth. The fish cake is so good 🫶 It's got both skewered fish cake and the thick, chewy kind together, and it's so hot that the soup alone could finish off a bottle of soju.

Soft steamed egg also comes as standard.

If you order the spicy fire jokbal, the steamed egg is a must to cool down the heat~! Even little kids could finish a whole meal with just rice balls and steamed egg haha.

Couple's set, medium charcoal jokbal: how much two people get

Then out came the medium-size charcoal-grilled jokbal. The Couple's Set comes with jokbal + makguksu + a drink, and you can choose either jokbal or bossam for the meat. I was craving spicy fire jokbal for once and thought about getting half-and-half, but figured it'd be too much for two, so I went with the Couple's Set instead.

Even at medium size, the portion is huge. The Couple's Set is meant for two, but with just an extra rice ball added, it could easily feed three people! ㅋㅋㅋ

And there's the sweet-and-tangy makguksu with cabbage and cucumber mixed in too~!

I've been eating a lot of cabbage for my diet lately, so I love that there's plenty of cabbage in it haha.

The makguksu portion is substantial too, right? We couldn't finish it all between the two of us, so we packed up the leftover jokbal to take home ㅋㅋㅋㅋ The Yongbong branch lets you pack leftovers, so it was easy to take it home.

The best way to eat charcoal-grilled jokbal

Anyone who loves perilla leaf wraps~~~! Make some noise~~! I love that bouncy, chewy skin part of the charcoal-grilled jokbal. Put the collagen-rich jokbal skin on a perilla leaf, top it with mumallaengi and ssamjang (dipping sauce), and wrap it up — that's the perfect way to eat Kkankkanhan's charcoal-grilled jokbal, complete~!

Is Kkankkanhan Jokbal a good spot for a holiday family gathering?

If you're looking for a great jokbal spot near Chonnam National University, I recommend Kkankkanhan Jokbal Yongbong Branch~! The restaurant is spacious, so it's great for work dinners and group gatherings too. Plus, they had baseball playing on a big screen, so I got to watch some baseball while eating jokbal. They're open as normal on the holiday too, so I'd recommend it as a dining spot for your Chuseok family gathering this year~!
