Mullae chicken restaurant for the World Cup, extra cheese: Jangjakgun
In short
Jangjakgun Mullae (장작꾼 문래점) is a wood-fired nurungji (scorched rice) chicken restaurant on Seonyu-ro in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul. While watching a World Cup football match, the writer ordered the herbal nurungji chicken with extra cheese, 8,000-won bibim guksu (spicy mixed noodles) and beer; Jangjakgun Mullae covered the chicken generously in mozzarella, and the staff were friendly. If you want chicken somewhere less crowded than Mullae Creative Village, go to Jangjakgun Mullae and always add the cheese.

Jangjakgun Mullae in a nutshell
- Taste: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ … extra cheese is a must!!!
- Atmosphere: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ … comfortable seats, nice
- Location: a bit awkward, but it's a little far from the Mullae hot spots, so it's pleasantly uncrowded!!! For me it was "actually, even better"
Why Jangjakgun Mullae for chicken in Mullae
Jangjakgun Mullae (장작꾼 문래점) is a chicken place on the Seonyu-ro side, a little away from the crowded streets of the Mullae Creative Village. Mullae means chicken, right? We wondered where to go, but the Mullae Creative Village area was just too packed. We wandered around and wanted a local favorite, so we ended up at Jangjakgun Mullae~~!!

When we got to Jangjakgun, a staff member was busy grilling chicken out front 🥹🥹 Seeing them fan the fire on such a hot day, I figured all that care would make it taste even better. Professionalism...

Seating and ordering at Jangjakgun Mullae
The place isn't huge, but it looks like it can easily take group tables too! The seats were comfortable~~~ And above all it was clean, +500 points.

Ordering is by kiosk, which was so convenient. So many things looked good that I took forever choosing, and with no one hovering it was totally fine. We ordered the herbal nurungji chicken + extra cheese + bibim guksu + beer!!! This combo. Absolutely recommend it.

Table setting and self-bar sauces
Once you sit down, they set the table first, and if it's not enough you can grab more from the self-bar, which put my mind at ease. All three sauces were sooo good that we ran short and kept fetching more. I especially recommend the yellow wasabi sauce.

Herbal nurungji chicken: is the extra cheese really necessary?
At Jangjakgun, the extra cheese on the herbal nurungji chicken is a must. The nurungji chicken is here!!!!! No, seriously, get the extra cheese!!!!!! They cover it with mozzarella without holding back at all. You can barely see the shape of the chicken, which is a huge, huge, huge plus. They clearly know good food 😍😍
In person it looks five times tastier. The pan is big, the chicken is big and the cheese is big, so my feelings for Jangjakgun grew big too…

₩8,000 bibim guksu: worth ordering with the chicken?
The bibim guksu (spicy mixed noodles) at Jangjakgun Mullae is ₩8,000, and in portion, taste and price it's perfect to order with the chicken~~~!!! When the chicken starts to feel a little greasy or heavy, twirl up a bite of the noodles and it's a reset.
Chili peppers are on top too, so it's nicely spicy and so good. Even when you're full, you keep eating it...

Not chimaek, tongmaek: draft beer
At Jangjakgun, draft beer is a must with whole chicken. Of course the beer is totally delicious too. Not chimaek (chicken and beer), but tongmaek (whole chicken and beer). Every table had a beer on it = proof that it's good.

But didn't they pour it really well? That little bit of foam on top is just... so much. 🤤 I don't even like drinking, and my mouth still watered. Warm chicken with cold draft beer, I'm drooling just thinking about it again.

My companion mixed the bibim guksu diligently for us and I enjoyed it so much~~~ They sprinkled loads of seaweed flakes too. Jangjakgun doesn't skimp on any ingredient, so 1000 points.

Roomy 2-person tables and friendly staff
Even the 2-person tables at Jangjakgun Mullae are wide, so the chicken pan, bibim guksu and beer all fit with room to spare. It was comfortable to sit and eat for a long time~~~~ The staff were super friendly and you could see them trying to serve well, which put me in a good mood ^_^

The best part: cheese stuck to the pan
The best part of the extra-cheese nurungji chicken is the golden cheese stuck to the pan. Found the tastiest bit mid-meal! Jangjakgun gives lots of cheese, so there were tons of crispy cheese bits. Crunchy, nutty and sooo good, and my companions all gave theirs up so I scraped up every last bit.
There's plenty of rice in it and it feels nutritious, so it was a meal that looked after my health too. Yum. Though after eating so much cheese by myself, I'm not sure how healthy I really am.

World Cup on TV and when it gets busy
Jangjakgun Mullae was showing football for the World Cup season, so we had fun watching while we ate~~~!! A chicken place with great instincts.

Even though I went quite early, seats filled up fast. If you're planning to go, move quickly... It seems mostly Yangpyeong-dong locals come, so it's certified as a local favorite. If you want chicken in Mullae, give Jangjakgun a try~.~
