Mullae Station chicken restaurant for a hot-day date: Jangjakgun

In short

Jangjakgun Mullae (장작꾼 문래점) is a nurungji chicken restaurant between Mullae Station and Yeongdeungpo-gu Office Station in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul, serving whole chickens turned and roasted over charcoal. On a hot early-evening date, the smell of charcoal drew the writer in. After a wait, the writer had Hanmac draft beer and the spicy half-and-half nurungji chicken (chicken on scorched rice). The 99% mozzarella, the crispy nurungji on the bottom and the sweet, mild sauce went well together. Jangjakgun Mullae is a good pick in Mullae when you want a beer or a hearty, restorative meal.

Looking for a great chicken place in Mullae???

Where is Jangjakgun Mullae, and how long is the wait?

Jangjakgun Mullae (장작꾼 문래점) sits between Exit 3 of Mullae Station and Exit 6 of Yeongdeungpo-gu Office Station, and I think walking from Mullae Station is faster. For the wait, follow the staff's instructions, write your phone number on the waiting board and hang tight. Tables turn over faster than I expected, so we got in quickly.

It had been a while since we'd come out to Mullae for a date. Walking down the street, a delicious smell came drifting over!! And then what did I spot but chicken roasting golden brown over charcoal? Ah, that's dinner tonight..! So we headed into Jangjakgun Mullae.

When we got to the door, the place was packed and there was a wait, and I thought, okay, this really is a good restaurant. It seems they roast a set number of chickens and make them to order. I got excited thinking we'd get hotter, more tender chicken because of that. haha

Inside Jangjakgun Mullae: seating and the self-serve bar

Inside Jangjakgun Mullae, the tables are standard 4-seaters, and you can push them together, so there were plenty of groups. There's a self bar, so you can grab extra side dishes as much as you like.

Our turn finally came and we went inside! So many people, right??? And it's still bright early evening.. I'm already looking forward to this! Even with so many people, the seating layout meant it never felt crowded, which I loved. The whole place was spotlessly clean, and we could eat in comfort.

What draft beer does Jangjakgun Mullae serve?

The draft beer at Jangjakgun Mullae is Hanmac. It was a really hot day, so we ordered draft beer the moment we walked in.

Look at that~ doesn't it look refreshing? Yes. It really was. A chilled glass with a bit of frost you can feel, topped with a nice layer of foam... Usually it'd be Cass or something, but this one was Hanmac! Oh... Hanmac is actually cold and nutty and really good~!! I gulped it right down.

Spicy half-and-half nurungji chicken and the Jangjakgun Mullae menu

At Jangjakgun Mullae you order on the mini kiosk at your seat, and the menu runs from herbal nurungji chicken (chicken roasted over scorched rice) and spicy half-and-half nurungji chicken to Cheongyang cream, corn cheese and scallion chicken. The sides, chicken feet and spicy sea snail salad (golbaengi-muchim), are all perfect with beer.

We ordered the spicy half-and-half nurungji chicken. Ta-da~! Insane looks, right!!! The sizzling cheese and spicy sauce had our mouths watering already. With corn piled on top too, I'd strongly recommend it if you love corn cheese but also want the seasoned flavor.

99% mozzarella and crispy scorched rice on the bottom

The spicy half-and-half nurungji chicken uses nutty 99% mozzarella, so the stretch is in a different league. It felt like you could pull it up to the ceiling. Roll it around the chicken, swoosh swoosh, pop it in your mouth and oh my~!!

And underneath, there's scorched rice pressed down, so you get the fun of scraping it up, plus the magic of the cheese hardening later and getting even more nutty, seriously??

Is the spicy nurungji chicken sauce very hot?

I liked that the spicy sauce at Jangjakgun Mullae isn't spicy enough to worry about. Sweet~ with just a little kick?? It brings out the corn cheese while cutting only the greasiness, so it tasted even better.

When to choose Jangjakgun Mullae

You get chicken turned and roasted over charcoal and served right away, so it's moist and tender, which I loved. If you want a beer in Mullae, or it's one of those days when you think I need a body-boosting meal today~!, I recommend Jangjakgun Mullae!!
